This final report details the activities completed for Task 8 of the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) Cooperative Agreement with the US Department of Energy (DOE). Task 8, titled "Support for the Nye County Early Warning Drilling Program" provided for a variety of hydrochemical analyses. The requirements of the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) Quality Assurance (QA) Program were followed for all work performed on this task. Archeological Excavation And Reburial Of Unmarked Historic Graves In The Pioneer Cemetary (41bo202), Brazoria County, Texas, Angelina L. Tiné, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Three unmarked graves within the predominantly African American Pioneer Cemetery in the City of Brazoria (Brazoria County), Texas, were exhumed and reburied within the cemetery. The graves were located within the right of way of State Highway 332, and were found during an earlier search phase done in conjunction with a planned expansion of the highway. The burial excavations and reburial were done in March and April 2003, by Prewitt and Associates, Inc., for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The graves contained the remains of three unknown individuals—a young woman (17–23 years old), an older woman (45–60 years old), …

Silica Based Solid Phase Extraction Sorbent With A Removable Alkyltrimethylammonium Surfactant Phase, Tony Oakes

Presented is a solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbent having a removable "stationary phase." This removable phase that consists of alkyltrimethylammonium surfactant is initially immobilized onto hydrophilic strong cation exchange resin. The surfactant chain through hydrophobic interactions extracts hydrophobic analytes in the same manner as conventional bonded alkyl moieties on silica based non-polar sorbents. For the extraction of very hydrophobic species with conventional sorbents, solvents used for analyte elution are generally toxic and not directly instrument compatible. The chosen solvent must be strong enough to efficiently break hydrophobic interactions between the analyte and sorbent. Using a removable "stationary phase," hydrophobic interactions …

In July 2003, the School of Natural Resource Sciences was merged with the Conservation and Survey Division and the Water Center Nebraska State Survey. This merger produced the School of Natural Resources (hereafter referred to as the "School") in its current form. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln requested a ten-year review of the School's programs and activities. The review was administered by the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) in cooperation with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Agriculture, and the School.

This report presents precipitation data collected using tipping bucket rain gauges in the vicinity of Yucca Mountain from October 1, 2000 to June 30, 2003. Operation of the tipping bucket precipitation monitoring network was assumed by the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies at University of Nevada, Las Vegas in March 2001. Previously, it had been operated by the U.S. Geological Survey. The precipitation monitoring network consists of 17 tipping bucket gauges at various locations in the vicinity of Yucca Mountain. During the 2001 water year, rainfall averaged 6.16 inches. The following 2002 water year was much drier averaging 1.11 …

There have been few published nest records for North Dakota (e.g., Haas 1985, Kantrud 1992, Buhl and Shaffer 2000) since Robert E. Stewart published Breeding Birds of North Dakota in 1975. For several species, we report dates for eggs, nestlings, or fledglings that occurred outside the intervals reported by Stewart (1975). For comparison, we provide nesting dates for breeding birds in South Dakota (Tallman et aI. 2002).

One of the biggest environmental battlegrounds facing Wisconsin’s future is actually underground. Groundwater supplies, one of the state’s most precious and valuable resources, are under siege.

Todd Ambs, the administrator of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Water Division discusses some of the current battle fronts in the address “Fixing Wisconsin’s Groundwater Problems” Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at Lawrence University. Harold Williams Borns, Jr. was born on November 28, 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His mother was Blanche Borns and his father was Harold William Borns, Sr., who worked in the potato chip industry and was very successful. Harold Borns, Jr. entered the military and served during World War II. After the war, he attended Tufts University where he developed an interest in Geology. He received his Ph.D. from Boston University and did post-graduate work at Yale where he changed his field to glacial geology.
