George Kell Reid, Jr., a longtime Florida resident, inspired many students to enter the field of marine biology. For over two decades, he taught students at Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College). This collection of research articles, unpublished seminar papers, and notes record Reid's strong interest in the limnology of Lake Maggiore and marine life in Boca Ciega Bay and other estuarine environments along the Pinellas peninsula. These materials, donated in March 2003 by Dr. John G. Schwede, contain no access restrictions.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pursuant to its authority under the Clean Water Act, has promulgated regulations creating the Storm Water Management Program. Contrary to the overall Clean Water Act scheme, which focuses on reducing pollution from point sources, the program has the objective of reducing non-point source water pollution. However, this program is not without controversy as heavy burdens are placed upon local governments, who themselves lack the financial resources, manpower, or technology to implement a complex federal system without federal or state assistance.

Attitudes Of University Students About Wildlife Damage Management: Effects Of Gender, Residence, And Classroom Experience, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Robert M. Timm

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

We evaluated the pre-and post-class responses of 142 university students enrolled in a 3-credit course on wildlife damage management during 1989-1996. Their knowledge of the status, distribution, and behavior of coyotes (Canis latrans) was remarkably high in the pre-and post-class surveys, yet males and urban students demonstrated an increase in knowledge after taking the course. "Specificity" was the most important factor that would influence the selection of a management technique, across gender and residence groups. Females, however, had a higher affinity for "humaneness," and "cost" was more important among males. Lethal methods of control were more acceptable to students after …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Oligonucleotide microarrays were used to profile directly extracted rRNA from environmental microbial populations without PCR amplification. In our initial inspection of two distinct estuarine study sites, the hybridization patterns were reproducible and varied between estuarine sediments of differing salinities. The determination of a thermal dissociation curve (i.e., melting profile) for each probe-target duplex provided information on hybridization specificity, which is essential for confirming adequate discrimination between target and nontarget sequences.

Bound For Cornell, Dean Lehman Looks Back And Ahead, University Of Michigan Law School

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

When he was named University of Michigan Law School dean at 37, Jeffrey S. Lehman, '81, became the youngest law school dean in America, and the youngest at Michigan since James Campbell was named our first dean in 1859. His near-decade at the helm has been accompanied by significant changes inside and outside of the Law School: The size and stature of the faculty has grown. The Law School's clinical programs have expanded immensely, and are now overseen by a full-time associate dean for clinical affairs. The Legal Practice Program has gained a national following and spawned many imitators. The …
