Lekhost A Tize: An Experiment In Film Production Methodology, Talley Mulligan Dec 2003

Lekhost A Tize: An Experiment In Film Production Methodology, Talley Mulligan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Proliferation and convergence of new technologies as well as the diverse media it has given rise to have had a dramatic impact on the theory and practice of contemporary filmmaking. This trend also holds considerable implication for the range of cinematic forms likely to be embraced in the future as well as the methodologies necessarily exploited in their making. The formal and expressive possibilities inherent in the climate of experimentation existing at this unique juncture in history encourage out-of-the-ordinary solutions to long-standing problems while begging important questions regarding the process and goal of filmmaking. Taking the films of the Czech …

The Accidental Place: Louis Armstrong Park Out Of Place On The North Side, Yvonne Estrade Dec 2003

The Accidental Place: Louis Armstrong Park Out Of Place On The North Side, Yvonne Estrade

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The failed New Orleans Cultural Center Complex was cultural genocide to an area of the neighborhood known as Treme, where a tribute to the jazz great and native son, Louis Armstrong, was planned as an afterthought. The questions remain, was the planning and building of Louis Armstrong Park responsible for the genocide of the Treme neighborhood, is the park an appropriate use of land, and what are the prospects for the park's future? This thesis examines the cultural gumbo of New Orleans history, explores the early days of Louis Armstrong and the development of jazz, sets the record straight by …

An Accurate Vo2max Non-Exercise Regression Model For 18 To 65 Year Old Adults, Danielle I. Bradshaw Dec 2003

An Accurate Vo2max Non-Exercise Regression Model For 18 To 65 Year Old Adults, Danielle I. Bradshaw

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a regression equation to predict VO2max based on non-exercise (N-EX) data. All participants (N = 100), aged 18-65 years old, successfully completed a maximal graded exercise test (GXT) to assess VO2max (mean ± SD; 39.96 mL∙kg-¹∙min&sup-1; ± 9.54 mL∙kg-¹∙min-¹). The N-EX data collected just before the maximal GXT included the participant's age, gender, body mass index (BMI), perceived functional ability (PFA) to walk, jog, or run given distances, and current physical activity (PA-R) level. Multiple linear regression generated the following N-EX prediction equation (R = .93, SEE = 3.45 mL∙kg-¹∙min-¹, %SEE = …

Analysis Of End-Of-Life Content In Critical Care Nursing Textbooks, Karin T. Kirchhoff, Renea L. Beckstrand, Prashanth Reddy Anumandla Dec 2003

Analysis Of End-Of-Life Content In Critical Care Nursing Textbooks, Karin T. Kirchhoff, Renea L. Beckstrand, Prashanth Reddy Anumandla

Faculty Publications

Nurses have identified a need for improving their knowledge and skills in providing end-of-life care. Critical care nursing textbooks can serve as an important source of information on end-of-life care for critical care nurses. Hence, an analysis of end-of-life content in 14 critical care nursing textbooks was conducted. Critical care nursing textbooks used for review were published in 1995 or later and identified from the libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Brigham Young University. The end-of-life content areas identified by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), under which the AACN end-of-life competencies for undergraduate nursing students can …

Arthritic Flexibilities: Analysis Of Wto Action Regarding Paragraph 6 Of The Doha Declaration On The Trips Agreement And Public Health, Brook K. Baker

ExpressO

This paper explores the tortured history of developing countries’ pursuit of access to affordable generic medicines that they are unable to produce efficiently on their own. Having lost rights to treat medicines as essential commodities and as generalized exceptions to patent protections in the WTO TRIPS Agreement, developing countries and public health activists temporarily reasserted the primacy of health over profits in the Doha Declaration on the TRIPS Agreement and Public Health in November of 2001. However, since most developing countries lack meaningful pharmaceutical capacity to manufacture medicines efficiently on their own, they needed flexibility to import medicines from countries …

Cultural Activity And Market Enterprise: A Circumpolar Comparison Of Reindeer Herding Communities At The End Of The 20th Century, Michael Stephen Koskey Dec 2003

Cultural Activity And Market Enterprise: A Circumpolar Comparison Of Reindeer Herding Communities At The End Of The 20th Century, Michael Stephen Koskey

Anthropology

Reindeer herding throughout the circumpolar North is in decline. Investigating this decline, this dissertation takes a comparative approach with a focus on four case studies: the Chukchi of Chukotskii Peninsula, the Iñupiat of the Seward Peninsula, the Saami of the Kola Peninsula, and the Saami of Finnmark. Because various rates and types of decline are occurring in these different cases, a comparative method leads to a systematic analysis of how patterns develop in the practice of contemporary reindeer herding, both locally and globally. Comparing and contrasting the trajectories of declines in reindeer herding identifies and explains the dimensions of specific …

Barents Sea Hydrographic Variability (1975-1991), Sarah Lukens Zimmermann Dec 2003

Barents Sea Hydrographic Variability (1975-1991), Sarah Lukens Zimmermann

Marine Biology

Barents Sea temperature and salinity anomalies and their connection to the Arctic Oscillation (AO) are analyzed using a 16-year time-series of hydrographic data (1975-1991). Seasonal and inter-annual variations are investigated along two sections spanning the meridional and zonal length of the Barents Sea over two depth layers, 0 to 50m and 50 to 200m. Depending on location, mean seasonal differences in the deeper layer are as large as 3°C in temperature and 0.2 in salinity, whereas the upper layer differences are 6°C and 1.4. Inter-annual anomalies are 0.6°C and 0.07 in the deeper layer and 0.8⁰C and 1.2 in the …

A Note On The History Of European Law And Economics: Wertheim's Dissertation, Heico Kerkmeester Dec 2003

A Note On The History Of European Law And Economics: Wertheim's Dissertation, Heico Kerkmeester

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

In 1930 a young Dutch scholar named W.F. Wertheim published his J.D.-dissertation Aansprakelijkheid voor schade buiten overeenkomst (Extra-contractual liability for damage). This dissertation did not attract much attention, and the author himself hardly did any further research on its topic. Taking in mind the development of law-and-economics some decades later, however, the book is highly remarkable. Long before the modern economic analysis of law was to be developed in the United States, attention was paid to the preventive effects of liability law and its influence on the welfare of society. In the first paragraph of this paper, Wertheims theory will …

Race, Religion, And Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment: A Test Of Attribution Theory, Sheila M. Schlaupitz Dec 2003

Race, Religion, And Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment: A Test Of Attribution Theory, Sheila M. Schlaupitz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study attempts to provide a more thorough understanding of public attitudes toward capital punishment. Two theories are tested toward this end, utilizing a random sample taken from the jury pool in Hillsborough County, Florida.

First, An indirect test of reference group theory demonstrates the degree to which faith group, religiosity, and race affect public attitudes toward the death penalty. Surprisingly, there is little, albeit mixed, support for reference group theory as it attempts to explain attitudes toward capital punishment. Using the relationships between religion and capital punishment attitudes that we presumed would emerge from the test of reference …
