A Phonological Grammar Of Northern Pame, Scott Charles Berthiaume
A Phonological Grammar Of Northern Pame, Scott Charles Berthiaume
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation describes the phonology and morphology of Northern Pame, an Otomanguean language of Central Mexico. Furthermore, it explains the grammatical relationship of these domains from an Optimality Theoretic perspective. In terms of description, Northern Pame has a complex phonological inventory of 40 consonants, which distinguish among glottalized, aspirated, voiceless and voiced segments, as well as 6 vowels, which contrast for nasalization. In addition, a claim is made for two Northern Pame tones, in contrast to earlier suggestions of a three-tone system (Avelino 1997). Regarding Otomanguean laryngeally complex vowels (Silverman 1997b, Herrera 2000), this research provides phonological, as well as …

A Sound Theology: The Vital Position Of Sound And Music To Hildegard Of Bingen's Theology And Public Identity, Geraldine E. Henderson
A Sound Theology: The Vital Position Of Sound And Music To Hildegard Of Bingen's Theology And Public Identity, Geraldine E. Henderson
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
The twelfth-century nun Hildegard of Bingen heard God's voice as a child and developed a sensitivity to all sounds that led her to an increasing conviction of the power of sound. Later this sensitivity to sound issued in a body of religious writing about sound that this dissertation views as systematic, as an implicit "Theology of Sound" that can be legitimately extrapolated from the work. To trace how this theology emerged, Chapter One of this dissertation will give a brief biography and an overview of the chronology and context of Hildegard's work. In preparing for a construction of the theology, …

Patience : A Play In Two Acts., Mary Rotella 1958-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When Howard Manning wakes from a fainting spell to find himself hospitalized with a serious but correctable weakness in his heart, his refusal of treatment intimates a death wish that provokes consternation among the skilled medical professionals who are poised to save his life. The first act explores the character and implications of his resistance in relation to the expectations of his surgeon Dr. Vincent Abel, nurse Zo Clement, psychiatry resident Trudy Zeffirelli, and neighboring patient Clarence Weatherby. It culminates with Manning's precipitous and injurious departure against medical advice. The second act reveals Manning returned to his hospital bed, withdrawn …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the progress of standards-based accountability in eliminating the effects of student background and school composition factors on student achievement and school performance in a large, urban district in Kentucky. The factors included gender, socioeconomic status (SES), ethnicity, mobility, family structure, giftedness, and disability. The school composition variables were the percentages of those factors in the school populations. Each grade and level--elementary, middle, and high school--was analyzed by multiple regression. At the student level, SES, giftedness, and disability predicted 15 to 36% of the variance in scores. SES, family structure, and mobility rate accounted for 56 to 91% …

Factors That Predict Student Performance In Dual Credit Courses In Kentucky Community And Technical Colleges., Nicholas L. Brake
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research addresses the problem of productivity in the P-16 system of education, emphasizing the repetition of the senior year of high school with the first year of postsecondary education. This study analyzes this integration through dual credit courses in the context of both P-12 and higher education reform in Kentucky. An analysis of these factors is critical in light of the deregulation of dual credit in Kentucky since 2000 and the increased enrollment of high school students in college courses both nationally and in Kentucky. Dual credit courses in Kentucky community and technical colleges are evaluated based on the …

James Wilson : Progressive Constitutionalist., Bradley Jay Caffee 1972-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This essay is a biography and ideological interpretation of James Wilson. Wilson was an important member of the Revolutionary generation whom historians and political theorists too often overlook. Moving from the rise of historical interest in Wilson and reasons why Wilson deserves study, this essay tells the story of Wilson's ideological development from the opposition Whig struggles of the 1760s until his law lectures in 1790 and 1791. Originally willing to accept Lockean ideas of contractualism in the British constitution he, like many Americans, rejected such contractualism during the Revolution in favor of an un-transferrable popular sovereignty that could only …
Different Roads To The Rule Of Law: Their Importance For Law Reform In Taiwan, James Maxeiner
Different Roads To The Rule Of Law: Their Importance For Law Reform In Taiwan, James Maxeiner
All Faculty Scholarship
Talk of law reform is in the air throughout East Asia. Whether in Beijing or Tokyo or here, law reform is spoken of in terms of strengthening the Rule of Law. But what is the Rule of Law? Different legal systems have different roads to reach the Rule of Law. These different roads are noticeable mainly in the different emphases different systems place on two critical elements in the realization of the Rule of Law State, namely rules and the machinery for implementing the rules, i.e., courts and administrative agencies. The Rule of Law makes demands on both the legal …

Barriers To Lesbian Health Care, Paula Bowles
Barriers To Lesbian Health Care, Paula Bowles
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The primary purpose of this research was to examine a sample of sixteen lesbian women regarding the barriers to lesbian health-care. From this information several interpretive findings regarding lesbian health-care are made. Data were gathered via indepth interviews with each individual lesbian. The data suggest that most lesbian women do not reveal their sexual orientation to their primary-care physician for fear of reprisal. Most of the women interviewed do feel they receive adequate health-care from their physician. The women who participated in this project did so confidentially and were assigned pseudonyms. They were asked questions on a variety of topics, …
