Goal two dictated a standard of statistical significance between the mean reading ability of an …

Reading Achievement In The Elementary Grades, Jeri Cepura Jan 2003

Reading Achievement In The Elementary Grades, Jeri Cepura

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was to raise the reading achievement of third grade students in a diverse city school with a student population of 618. Analysis of archival data for the past three years indicated that reading comprehension scores on the state test (MSPAP) and local criterion-referenced tests have remained unchanged with a relatively flat trend. Approximately 50% of all students had reached a satisfactory level as opposed to the 70% state expectation. Staff development for teaching reading was provided through external conferences or at the county level as a one-time in-service with no follow-up, application expectancy, or examination of student …

They exhibited difficulty staying on task and working cooperatively with peers, repeatedly interrupted instruction, used negative language, did not return homework, and were often referred to the office for disciplinary action.

In a 5-week training session, teachers learned how to implement the writer’s Sowing SEEDS (Social Emotional and Educational Development of Students) Curriculum. This literacy-based program contained children’s literature aligned …

The Creation Of A Diagnostic Reading Program Designed To Meet The Developmental Needs Of Primary Grade Readers, Thomas A. Baruffi Jan 2003

The Creation Of A Diagnostic Reading Program Designed To Meet The Developmental Needs Of Primary Grade Readers, Thomas A. Baruffi

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Over a 5-year period from 1995-1996 to 1999-2000, an average of 18% of the students entering fifth grade in the Linwood Public School system were reading below grade level. This statistic clearly indicates that reading difficulties must be addressed early in the process of reading acquisition. With the understanding that learning to read is a developmental process, classroom teachers were challenged to obtain and utilize the diagnostic skills necessary to meet the individual educational needs of their students by identifying their learning strengths and weaknesses.

With the goal of developing a reading program designed around the diagnostic process, All Students …

Attendance: The First Step Towards Success, Steven W. Green Jan 2003

Attendance: The First Step Towards Success, Steven W. Green

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Student achievement is clearly the purpose of schools, and in today's world of high stakes testing, accountability has certainly been an educational buzzword. However, there are many factors that impact student achievement levels with many of these factors being out of the control of teachers and administrators. One factor on which school officials can have an impact is student attendance.

In the past at Dobson High School in Mesa, Arizona, student attendance was addressed in two ways: first, absences, were documented and recorded; second, punishments were applied after students accumulated too many absences. This was a cold and reactive process …

Novel Concepts For Monitoring The Stability Of Open Pit Mine Highwalls Using Radar Interferometry And Spectral Imaging, Jami Girard Dwyer Jan 2003

Novel Concepts For Monitoring The Stability Of Open Pit Mine Highwalls Using Radar Interferometry And Spectral Imaging, Jami Girard Dwyer

Masters Theses

"Ground control problems at surface mining operations can occur for a variety of reasons. The geologic setting, rock strengths, joint spacing, orientation, pore pressures, and many other factors contribute to slope instabilities that range from small rock falls to massive slides of material. While much of this ground movement can be predicted or controlled, each year many completely unexpected failures occur. This poses serious safety and economic issues for the mining industry, since any unanticipated movement of the ground increases the potential for significant property damage, injuries, and even death. In the United States alone, 70 people died in slope …

Dsp Processor Based Vision Processing And System Integration For Control Of Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (Lamp), Srinivas Musti Jan 2003

Dsp Processor Based Vision Processing And System Integration For Control Of Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (Lamp), Srinivas Musti

Masters Theses

"This thesis presents the research and development of a real-time vision system and integration of various subsystems to build the hybrid system for the Laser aided manufacturing process (LAMP), being developed at the University of Missouri--Rolla. A description of the real-time control architecture, showing the interaction of the real-time controller with various sensors and subsystems to monitor and regulate the process is presented.

Control of melt pool geometry is important for ensuring the final product quality since the bead size significantly influences the joint strength. However, during the deposition process, impurities and the plume present around the pool complicate the …
