Voltage Balancing Control Of Diode-Clamped Multilevel Rectifier/Inverter Systems, Zhiguo Pan, Keith Corzine, V. R. Stefanovic, J. M. Leuthen, Fang Zheng Peng Jan 2003

Voltage Balancing Control Of Diode-Clamped Multilevel Rectifier/Inverter Systems, Zhiguo Pan, Keith Corzine, V. R. Stefanovic, J. M. Leuthen, Fang Zheng Peng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a new voltage balancing control for the diode-clamped multilevel rectifier/inverter system. A complete analysis of the voltage balance theory for a 5-level back-to-back system is given. The analysis is based on fundamental frequency switching control and then extended to pulse-width modulation. The method involves obtaining optimal switching angles; a process which is described in detail in this paper. The proposed control strategy regulates the DC bus voltage, balances the capacitors, and decreases the harmonic components of the voltage and current. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the optimizing method and control theory.

Adaptive Neural Network Based Power System Stabilizer Design, Wenxin Liu, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2003

Adaptive Neural Network Based Power System Stabilizer Design, Wenxin Liu, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power system stabilizers (PSS) are used to generate supplementary control signals for the excitation system in order to damp the low frequency power system oscillations. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional PSS (CPSS), numerous techniques have been proposed in the literature. Based on the analysis of existing techniques, this paper presents an indirect adaptive neural network based power system stabilizer (IDNC) design. The proposed IDNC consists of a neuro-controller, which is used to generate a supplementary control signal to the excitation system, and a neuro-identifier, which is used to model the dynamics of the power system and to adapt the …

Spectral Measures And Perceptual Ratings Of Hypokinetic Dysarthria, Christopher Dromey Jan 2003

Spectral Measures And Perceptual Ratings Of Hypokinetic Dysarthria, Christopher Dromey

Faculty Publications

Ten individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) and hypokinetic dysarthria were compared with age-matched neurologically normal (NN) speakers on acoustic measures from speaking and vowel phonation tasks as well as on perceptual ratings of connected speech. Listeners identified differences between the groups when asked to judge the severity of vocal and articulatory impairment during reading. Several conventional acoustic measures failed to differentiate speakers with PD from NN speakers. However, measures of the shape (statistical moments) of the long term average spectrum (LTAS) revealed statistically significant differences between the groups across vowel phonation, reading and monologue tasks. The ease of computation of …

Metrics For Evaluating Human-Robot Interactions, Michael A. Goodrich, Dan R. Olsen Jr. Jan 2003

Metrics For Evaluating Human-Robot Interactions, Michael A. Goodrich, Dan R. Olsen Jr.

Faculty Publications

Metrics for evaluating the quality of a human-robot interface are introduced. The autonomy of a robot is measured by its neglect time. The robot attention demand metric measures how much of the user’s attention is involved with instructing a robot. The free-time and fan-out metrics are two ways to measure this demand. Each of them leads to estimates of the interaction effort. Reducing interaction effort without diminishing task effectiveness is the goal of human-robot interaction design.

The 1853 Mormon Migration Through Keokuk, Fred E. Woods, Douglas Atterberg

Faculty Publications

In May 1853, William W. Belknap, who would later serve as a major general in the Civil War and as secretary of war to President Grant, wrote to his sister, Clara, about the Mormon emigrants who were outfitting in Keokuk, Iowa, that spring and summer: "Yesterday was Sunday and I wish you had been here to go up to the Mormon Camp with me. They had preaching at three stands in three languages--English, German, and Danish. They sing --especially the Danes--very sincerely and are perfectly enthusiastic. It is a strange, strange mystery and if you were here you'd be astonished. …

The General Welfare Clause And The Public Trust: An Essay In Original Understanding, Robert G. Natelson Jan 2003

The General Welfare Clause And The Public Trust: An Essay In Original Understanding, Robert G. Natelson

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article examines the three traditional interpretations of the General Welfare Clause -- first, that it is a plenary grant of regulatory and spending power to Congress; second, that it is a plenary grant of spending power only; and third, that it is not a grant of power at all. The author finds severe textual problems with the first and second interpretations and his historical analysis confirms that those interpretations have little basis in original understanding. The third view, says the author, is the most textually sound.

Part II of the article addresses prior studies of the General Welfare Clause …

Theses

Graduate students Leslie Grant (RIT) and Alex Terzich (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities) collaborated on the production of a small book of photographs, a proposed atlas, and an architectural intervention focusing on salt mining in Livingston County, New York. Their work was based on interdisciplinary research, the interdependence of theory and practice, and an acknowledgment of the viewer as key to meaning production in art and architecture. Grant's work describes the overall scope of the thesis work, and concentrates on her work on the book of photography.

Cultural Differences And Organizational Leadership: Cultural Difference As Barriers To The Trans-Cultural Application Of The Concept Of Organizational Leadership, Jennifer Matic Jan 2003

Cultural Differences And Organizational Leadership: Cultural Difference As Barriers To The Trans-Cultural Application Of The Concept Of Organizational Leadership, Jennifer Matic

Theses

This study examined the impact of cultural differences on the trans-cultural application of the concept of organizational leadership. The significance of four cultural dimensions (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, and masculinity) (Hofstede, G., 1980) towards the concept of organizational leadership (Rost, J.C, 1991) was discussed and a survey as created to test for cultural differences from a leadership perspective. American and Croatian college students then completed the survey. Results showed cultural similarities for all cultural dimensions with the exception of uncertainty avoidance, which was found to be higher for the American sample than the Croatian. Consequently, it can be said …

Subjects were pre-service elementary general educators enrolled in a large southern university (N=93). Students from intact classes were randomly placed into either the experimental group or the control group. The treatment consisted of six music listening …

2d Radiative Transfer In Astrophysical Dusty Environments, Dejan Vinkovic Jan 2003

2d Radiative Transfer In Astrophysical Dusty Environments, Dejan Vinkovic

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

I have developed a new general-purpose deterministic 2D radiative transfer code for astrophysical dusty environments named LELUYA (www.leluya.org). It can provide the solution to an arbitrary axially symmetric multi-grain dust distribution around an arbitrary heating source. By employing a new numerical method, the implemented algorithm automatically traces the dust density and optical depth gradients, creating the optimal unstructured triangular grid. The radiative transfer equation includes dust scattering, absorption and emission. Unique to LELUYA is also its ability to self-consistently reshape the sublimation/condensation dust cavity around the source to accommodate for the anisotropic diffuse radiation. LELUYAs capabilities are demonstrated in the …

A Detailed Sector Analysis Of The Holstein Beef Market, Kenneth H. Burdine Jan 2003

A Detailed Sector Analysis Of The Holstein Beef Market, Kenneth H. Burdine

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The Holstein beef sector is a fascinating and integral part of the United States beefsystem; however, it has been largely overlooked in academic research. Holstein beef has longsuffered from perceptions that it is of poor quality. Recent changes in slaughter industrystructure, marketing systems, and production models have made the Holstein systemunbelievably complex. Coupled with econometric modeling, this sector analysis uses a semistructuredinterview approach to evaluate the reality of these perceptions, the impact of thesechanges, and to determine what truly drives the Holstein beef market. Results suggest that manyof the perceptions of Holstein beef are inaccurate; the market for Holstein steers …

Development Agents And Nomadic Agency In The Damergou, Niger: Four Perspectives In The Development "Market", Karen Marie Greenough Jan 2003

Development Agents And Nomadic Agency In The Damergou, Niger: Four Perspectives In The Development "Market", Karen Marie Greenough

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Discourse between development agents and nomads implies that development for nomadiccommunities is a contradiction in terms. A "market-oriented" subtext underscores the investors'power of international agencies, the brokers' competition of intermediate organizations, and thenomadic clients' opportunism. Interviews and participant-observation focused on relationsbetween Wo??aa??e communities, bilateral and local organizations, and government extensionservices. I compare the data obtained with historical events to illuminate current phenomena.Approaches of structuration, political ecology, and disequilibrium theory aid an examination ofcommunication and discourses, and gaps in understanding between the parties. I find thatessential pastoral livelihood strategies of mobility and customary institutions are threatened bythe development system. How will …

A Spatial Model For Evaluating Variable-Rate Fertilizer Application Accuracy, John Patrick Fulton Jan 2003

A Spatial Model For Evaluating Variable-Rate Fertilizer Application Accuracy, John Patrick Fulton

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The popularity of variable-rate technology (VRT) has grown. However, the limitations and errors ofthis technology are generally unknown. Therefore, a spatial data model was developed to generate "asapplied"surfaces to advance precision agricultural (PA) practices. A test methodology based on ASAEStandard S341.2 was developed to perform uniform-rate (UR) and variable-rate (VR) tests to characterizedistribution patterns testing four VRT granular applicators (two spinner spreaders and two pneumaticapplicators). Single-pass UR patterns exhibited consistent shapes for three of the applicators with patternsshifts observed for the fourth applicator. Simulated overlap analysis showed that three of the applicatorsperformed satisfactorily with most CVs less than 20% while …

Quality Of Life Dimensions For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Kathleen Sheppard-Jones Jan 2003

Quality Of Life Dimensions For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Kathleen Sheppard-Jones

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Quality of life is a phrase that most people are familiar with, regardless of whether or not they can define it. Much research has been conducted across disciplines in an effort to explain the construct. As human service programs become more focused on outcomes, there is greater interest in measuring quality of life as an indicator of service quality and success. This study was designed to test whether or not quality of life differences exist between adults with developmental disabilities and the general population at an item, scale, and composite level. The quality of life dimensions that were tested included …

Who Is Andrea Yates? A Short Story About Insanity, Deborah W. Denno Jan 2003

Who Is Andrea Yates? A Short Story About Insanity, Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

On June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her four children in a bathtub. At Andrea’s trial, in Harris County, Texas, the prosecution’s star expert, Patrick Dietz, appeared particularly adept at persuading the jury to accept the prosecution’s assertion that Andrea was sane and acting intentionally when she killed her children. This Article analyzes the problematic aspects of Dietz's testimony in an effort to contribute some balance to the Andrea Yates story. Despite the long history of expert witnesses in criminal trials, the justice system should question the fairness and efficacy of such an unregulated storytelling process. Part I of this …

Criminal Neglect: Indigent Defense From A Legal Ethics Perspective Ethics Symposium What Do Clients Want: Practice Contexts, Bruce A. Green Jan 2003

Criminal Neglect: Indigent Defense From A Legal Ethics Perspective Ethics Symposium What Do Clients Want: Practice Contexts, Bruce A. Green

Faculty Scholarship

Most criminal defendants in the United States cannot afford to pay for a lawyer's services, and as a result their lawyers are government funded. Unfortunately, some state and local governments drastically under-fund indigent defense services. Criminal defense lawyers serving in these jurisdictions typically carry grossly excessive caseloads and are therefore severely restricted in how much time they can devote to individual clients. Commentators have targeted the under-funding of indigent defense systems as a problem of criminal justice, constitutional law, and civil rights. That is certainly true, but the under-funding of indigent defense also raises a serious and inadequately recognized problem …

Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland Jan 2003

Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland

The Christian Librarian

During the last half of the 20'11 century, the American Library Association- through the Office of Intellectual Freedom, the Freedom to Read Foundation and the Intellectual Freedom Action Network (ALAs Office 1995, 13) has emerged as one of America's leading opponents of censorship and advocates of free speech. The American Library Association's opposition to censorship is so absolute that it stands firmly against any library restrictions on access to books, magazines or internet sites even by children (Intellectual 1996, 84-94; cf. Berry 1998, 6; Mason 1997, I 04). There is some evidence, however, to suggest that there is a gap …
