To Catch A Thief: What To Do With Plagiarists In The Language, Literature Or Culture Classroom, Sue Norton Jan 2003

To Catch A Thief: What To Do With Plagiarists In The Language, Literature Or Culture Classroom, Sue Norton

Level 3

This paper conjectured why students in higher education, particularly in language, literature, and culture courses, plagiarise. It considered some of the ways assessors respond to plagiarism and suggested how we might reduce its occurrence.

It argued that most lecturers and tutors simply lack the time and, for sensible and practical reasons, even the motivation to track down the sources of suspect material in order to prove a charge of plagiarism. And anyway, the levelling of formal charges not only demoralises all concerned, but fails to respond to the conditions that give rise to plagiarism in the first place.

Rather than …

Mechanisms Underlying Protection Against Rt-2 Gliomagenesis In Rat Brain Utilizing Primary And Secondary Vaccination, Andrea M. Lister Jan 2003

Mechanisms Underlying Protection Against Rt-2 Gliomagenesis In Rat Brain Utilizing Primary And Secondary Vaccination, Andrea M. Lister

Theses and Dissertations

Primary brain tumor affects some 18,000 adults in the United States each year (Silverberg et al., 1990; Merchant et al., 1997) and over 30% are high-grade anaplastic astrocytoma or glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) (Parney et al., 1997). According to Kruse et al., 1989, the treatment of patients with recurrent or persistent high-grade gliomas represents a major therapeutic challenge. The use of conventional therapy consisting of surgery, followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy for gliomas, has been relatively ineffective (Jaecle et al., 1994) despite the fact that these therapies are cytoreductive in nature (Black, 1991). Most malignancies will recur locally but may …

John Hartwell Cocke (1780-1866): From Jeffersonian Palladianism To Romantic Colonial Revivalism In Antebellum Virginia, Muriel Brine Rogers Jan 2003

John Hartwell Cocke (1780-1866): From Jeffersonian Palladianism To Romantic Colonial Revivalism In Antebellum Virginia, Muriel Brine Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

John Hartwell Cocke was a Virginia planter and amateur architect whose style evolved from Jeffersonian Classicism to a revival of English Tudor-Stuart or Jacobethan architecture. This dissertation discusses the Cocke family's Elizabethan roots and advances four theses. The first of these theses is that John Hartwell Cocke implemented Thomas Jefferson's principles for the reform of Virginia architecture. Cocke's most ambitious project, a Jeffersonian Palladian mansion called Bremo, was in the planning stages by 1815. The second thesis is that Cocke's off-plantation buildings signals his break from the Palladianism of Thomas Jefferson in favor of the Jacobean style for his houses …

Parental Reports Of The Development Of Autism In Their Children: The Relevance Of Regression, Comorbidity, And Genetics In The Detection Ofearly Characteristics, Robin Page Goin Jan 2003

Parental Reports Of The Development Of Autism In Their Children: The Relevance Of Regression, Comorbidity, And Genetics In The Detection Ofearly Characteristics, Robin Page Goin

Theses and Dissertations

Early detection of autism plays an important role in enhancing developmental outcomes for affected children. Identifying potential characteristics of the disorder evident during infancy and toddlerhood aids efforts to screen for such symptoms, which may lead to earlier and more accurate diagnoses; however, it is unclear to what extent certain factors encourage or impede early detection. Because parents are responsible for making decisions on behalf of their children based upon their perceptions of children's developmental progression, caregivers were queried in terms of their beliefs about the development of autism characteristics in their children. Participants included 393 caregivers of children with …

A Constructivist Inquiry Of Church-State Relationships For Faith-Based Organizations, Jon Eric Singletary Jan 2003

A Constructivist Inquiry Of Church-State Relationships For Faith-Based Organizations, Jon Eric Singletary

Theses and Dissertations

Faith-based initiatives have the potential to alter church-state relationships as they remove barriers to the public funding of human services in organizations that promote the role of values, beliefs, and other characteristics of faith. In seeking to "level the playing field" for these faith-based organizations, faith-based initiatives suggest moving away from past practices, where "religious" organizations utilized public funding for the delivery of "secular" human services, and toward the public funding support of organizations whose human service activities are based on faith in a more thoroughgoing manner. This research inquires into meanings assigned to opportunities and risks related to the public …

Effects Of Domestic Violence Exposure In Colombian Adolescents: Pathways To Violent And Prosocial Behavior, Roberto Mejia Jan 2003

Effects Of Domestic Violence Exposure In Colombian Adolescents: Pathways To Violent And Prosocial Behavior, Roberto Mejia

Theses and Dissertations

A multidimensional model of associations between domestic violence exposure and risk of violence and prosocial behavior was tested in a sample of Colombian adolescents, with attention to impulsivity and substance use problems as mediators of these associations. A representative sample of 1,152 school youths and a convenience group of 148 juvenile offenders aged 11-19 years was recruited from Medellin, the second largest city in this South American country. Assessment was carried out in classrooms in the school sample and in correctional institutions for juvenile offenders. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized to test the conceptually derived models. Similarly, multisample analyses …

Equitable And Adequate Funding For Rural Schools: Ensuring Equal Educational Opportunity For All Students, Marty Strange Jan 2003

Equitable And Adequate Funding For Rural Schools: Ensuring Equal Educational Opportunity For All Students, Marty Strange

Nebraska Law Review

Since the early 1970s, state court litigation has been brought in forty-six of the fifty states, with plaintiffs asserting legal claims under state equal protection and education clauses. These lawsuits were prompted by various factors. In many southern states, inequities in school funding are vestiges of formerly racially segregated school systems outlawed in Brown v. Board of Education. Heavy reliance by states on local property assessments and taxes to pay for education is also the cause of inequities leading to litigation. Taxpayer resistance to spending on education has been another cause. Nearly all of the recent court cases involving …

The Impact Of Litigation On Rural Students: From Free Textbooks To School Consolidation, Robert M. Bastress Jan 2003

The Impact Of Litigation On Rural Students: From Free Textbooks To School Consolidation, Robert M. Bastress

Nebraska Law Review

The past three decades have seen a historic assertion of authority by state courts in the development of a wide range of educational policies. Judicial decisions in many states have recognized a right to an education that is not only judicially enforceable but also subject to a significant degree of judicial control. Most prominent have been the decisions by twenty-six state courts that ordered overhauls of school finance systems to achieve a more equitable distribution of education resources. Courts have also addressed other issues that define the right to an education, effecting significant changes for rural education. Meanwhile, school consolidation—of …

"What's Love Got To Do With It?" "It's Not Like They're Your Friends For Christ's Sake": The Complicated Relationship Between Lawyer And Client, Robert J. Condlin

Nebraska Law Review

Should lawyers love their clients and try to be their friends? Scholars have defended the “lawyer-as-friend” analogy, but usually they have relied on a more contractual understanding of friendship compatible with traditional concepts of adversary advocacy. I will discuss lawyer-client relationships by examining two generations of scholarly argument for the lawyer-as-friend view, and a description of the approach in operation in an actual legal case. These discussions show in detail what sorts of questions a lawyer-as-friend takes up, how he or she divides or shares representational tasks with clients differently from lawyers who use more traditional approaches to legal representation, …

Liturgical Inculturation: The Future That Awaits Us, Anscar J. Chupungco Jan 2003

Liturgical Inculturation: The Future That Awaits Us, Anscar J. Chupungco

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

Among Lutherans liturgical inculturation is not a novelty. When Martin Luther translated the Latin liturgy into German and adopted popular songs for church services, he embarked on liturgical inculturation. The vernacular, unlike Latin, is a living language and is thus a sure vehicle of culture. It expresses the people's thought and behavioral patterns and is an established bearer of their values and institutions. In short, the use of the vernacular in the liturgy is in itself a sign that inculturation has taken place.

Teacher Development Through Action Research : A Case Study In Focused Action Research., Gillian Perrett Jan 2003

Teacher Development Through Action Research : A Case Study In Focused Action Research., Gillian Perrett

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

'Focused action research' was employed in a teacher inservice program which sought to develop a fusion between trainer-centred input and teacher-centred action research. The areas of input to teachers were learning strategies, thinking skills, questioning skills and the teaching of study skills. During the four months of this action research project of the teacher educators, teachers experienced two cycles of action research, one investigating their students' learning strategies and the second implementing a plan to improve some aspect of their students' learning - such as summary writing, remedial reading, hotseating, introducing group work, vocabulary-learning techniques - and wrote reports on …

Questions : Help Or Hindrance? Teachers' Use Of Questions With Indigenous Children With Conductive Hearing Loss., Ann Galloway Jan 2003

Questions : Help Or Hindrance? Teachers' Use Of Questions With Indigenous Children With Conductive Hearing Loss., Ann Galloway

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The development of oral language skills is an important foundation for written literacy for all children. However, where children have conductive hearing loss and consequent language impairment, the development of good oral language skills, especially those that underlie written literacy, becomes even more important. This paper discusses the use of questions during literacy focus lessons by three teachers of Indigenous students, and the way in which their use of questions serves to support or inhibit children’s opportunities to participate in classroom interaction. The paper concludes with a brief consideration of the implications of the findings for teacher education.

Why Indigenous Issues Are An Essential Component Of Teacher Education Programs, Gary Partington Jan 2003

Why Indigenous Issues Are An Essential Component Of Teacher Education Programs, Gary Partington

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The extensive failure of Indigenous students in school, particularly during adolescence, is a shameful characteristic of Australian education. Students who have most to gain from a successful school experience are the most likely to leave school with minimal skills and qualifications. The situation has shown little improvement over 30 years, as evidenced by the repetitious nature of articles in, for example, The Australian Journal of Indigenous Education. Government inquiries into Indigenous education, especially those addressing issues such as attendance (Bourke, Rigby & Burden, 2000), identity (Purdy, Tripcony, Boulton-Lewis, Fanshawe & Gunstone, 2000) and achievement (Department of Education, Training and Youth …

The Men And Women Of Gettysburg College: Class Of 1903, Daryl Grenz Jan 2003

The Men And Women Of Gettysburg College: Class Of 1903, Daryl Grenz

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

On Thursday September 7, 1899 a new school year (its sixty-eighth) began at Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg.1 Many students had arrived as early as that Sunday to begin settling into their rooms. Many of the forty-three new students2 had been accepted the previous June by passing a series of entrance exams in all of the applicable subject areas, especially the Classics. A number of others had waited and taken the exams as the school year started. Eighteen individuals were exempt from entrance exams because of their satisfactory work during the previous year at the attached preparatory school in Stevens Hall. …

"The Tenter-Hooks Of Temptation": The Debate Over Theatre In Post-Revolutionary America, Meredith Bartron Jan 2003

"The Tenter-Hooks Of Temptation": The Debate Over Theatre In Post-Revolutionary America, Meredith Bartron

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In Royall Tyler’s 1787 play The Contrast, the innocent and simple Yankee Jonathan unknowingly attends a playhouse, mistaking it for a hocus pocus show. The historian and eighteenth-century theatre manager, William Dunlap, later criticized Tyler’s play because his hero was a clown who misrepresented the new nation that the Revolutionary War created. Tyler’s satirical portrait of his hero, however, is not an attack on the Yankee, but rather a symbol of the ideological conflicts within America. Jonathan repeats the religious charges against theatre, but he also joins in the fun at the playhouse. He is simple and honest, but he …

Fragmented Copyright, Fragmented Management: Proposals To Defrag Copyright Management, Daniel Gervais, Alana Maurushat Jan 2003

Fragmented Copyright, Fragmented Management: Proposals To Defrag Copyright Management, Daniel Gervais, Alana Maurushat

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The collective management of copyright in Canada was conceived as a solution to alleviate the problem of inefficiency of individual rights management. Creators could not license, collect and enforce copyright efficiently on an individual basis. Requiring users to obtain permission from individual copyright holders for the use of a work was equally inefficient. Collectives, therefore, emerged to facilitate the clearance of rights between creators and users. Even with the facilitation of collectives in the process, clearing rights remains an inherently difficult and convoluted process. This is especially so in the age of the Internet where clearing rights for multimedia products …
