Risk Avoidance, Cultural Discrimination, And Environmental Justice For Indigenous Peoples, Catherine O'Neill Jan 2003

Risk Avoidance, Cultural Discrimination, And Environmental Justice For Indigenous Peoples, Catherine O'Neill

Faculty Articles

This article begins with the recognition that environmental justice for Native peoples requires attention to the interrelated cultural, spiritual, social, ecological, economic, and political dimensions of environmental issues. It observes, moreover, that “environmental justice requires an appreciation of each tribe’s particular historical circumstances and contemporary understandings, including each group’s aspirations for the flourishing of its culture.” It contends that some environmental decision makers and commentators have increasingly come to embrace “risk avoidance” – strategies that call upon risk-bearers to alter their practices in order to avoid the risk of environmental harms – in lieu of risk reduction – strategies that …

Candy Apples And Other Tales Of Entropy, Brent Hayes Bonds Jan 2003

Candy Apples And Other Tales Of Entropy, Brent Hayes Bonds

Honors Theses

The following is a creative thesis. Comprised of six short stories, the work is bound by the aim of each story to convey that awareness is hardly ever a moment of triumph, but the acknowledgment and acceptance of all the imperfections and the unknowns that exist in our world. Chief among the themes of these stories is the idea of entropy, that is, the natural tendency of all things to progress from a state of order to one of disorder. While the majority of these stories embrace these ideals through the use of the same characters, though, at various points …

The Constitutional Structure And The Jurisprudence Of Justice Scalia, Bradford R. Clark Jan 2003

The Constitutional Structure And The Jurisprudence Of Justice Scalia, Bradford R. Clark

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Commentators generally regard federalism and separation of powers as distinct features of the constitutional structure. In reality, these doctrines were designed to work together to further the same goals: to avoid tyranny and to preserve individual liberty. Professor Thomas Merrill overlooks this connection in a recent attempt to explain the Supreme Court's decision making process under Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Professor Merrill maintains that there have been two Rehnquist Courts: one from 1986 to 1994, and another from 1994 to the present. In Professor Merrill's view, the first Rehnquist Court focused on social issues - such as abortion, affirmative action, …

Art In The Early Church: The Empty Cross And Images Of Christ, Catherine Combier-Donovan Jan 2003

Art In The Early Church: The Empty Cross And Images Of Christ, Catherine Combier-Donovan

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The cross or the crucifix -which is older? Convinced that the representation and veneration of the cross itself is an older, more authentic and venerable tradition than that of the crucifix, my goal was to trace the evolution of the image of the cross in the context of early Christian art: the first examples of the cross, the early images of Christ, and the first depictions of Christ on the cross, This essay considers the historical, social, and theological contexts for such images, and several theories to explain why the cross was for so long represented without Christ upon it …

The Influence Of Japanese Figure Conventions On French Art Of The Late Nineteenth Century, Lana Carol Zepponi Jan 2003

The Influence Of Japanese Figure Conventions On French Art Of The Late Nineteenth Century, Lana Carol Zepponi

Honors Theses

Japanese ukiyo-e prints influenced the treatment of figures in French art during the second half of the nineteenth century. While this topic has been addressed by scholars of japonisme, I did not find a work in English focused solely on it. Herein, I analyze the transfer of Japanese figure conventions to French art by compiling Gabriel Weisberg, Colta Feller Ives, and Jay Martin observations, and comparing French and Japanese art to information from scholars such Kloner, presenting my support my argument. Works by major artists Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Mary as own Cassatt are discussed. I chose these artists …

Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent Jan 2003

Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent

Honors Theses

Indigenous education became prevalent in the ideology of the Mexican government after the Revolution on 1911. The leading school of thought about how to integrate Mexico’s indigenous population was led by anthropologists. Through indigenismo, the government adopted policies that would explore indigenous communities and promote them into the national identity. Bilingual education became one of the most important instruments of the movement under the direction of the Instituto Nacional Indigenista. I collected my data from a wealth of resources. One source of information the historical texts written on Mexican history. Anthropological texts also aided in the discussion of indigenous people …

Strong Black Woman: An Examination Of Cultural Images Of Black Women, Tamika Renee Montgomery Jan 2003

Strong Black Woman: An Examination Of Cultural Images Of Black Women, Tamika Renee Montgomery

Honors Theses

Through literary works and life experiences and in an effort to dispel negative images, an unrealistic image of a strong black woman has been presented to society. As a black woman surrounded by black women who have attempted to personify this superwoman image, and more importantly as a black woman who has been encouraged to adopt this image, I have done research to discover if this woman truly exists. I have read a number of literary works that span over the entire twentieth century, examined cultural and psychological studies relevant to the black woman. I also did research on the …

A Comparison Of Peaceful And Violent Separatist Movements, William Dorsey Pieschel Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Peaceful And Violent Separatist Movements, William Dorsey Pieschel

Honors Theses

The following work is an attempt to understand why separatist movements become violent. In any given region of the world under any given state, there will always be a group of people who are not content with the present order of government. If this group is large enough, it will most likely try to alter the structure of the government, which often takes the form of separatism. I want to understand the methods of these separatist movements and specifically, why some resort to violence and others do not. The first part of my thesis analyzes different separatist movements. I chose …

Honors Theses

This work explores the lives of black and white Southern women, focusing on their role in Southern society as mothers. It covers a variety of Southern literature from var>'ing time periods concerning women of different races and social classes. In each of the works, I have found that maternal characteristics bring women together with an opportunity to bridge gaps between the races, thus allowing motherhood the pov/er to blend cultures. This work is divided into three sections. The first section is an introduction into the lives of women as mothers. It explores the joys and pains of motherhood, and …

Monte Carlo Simulation Of A Nonlinear Epidemic, Blair Margaret Bannerman Jan 2003

Monte Carlo Simulation Of A Nonlinear Epidemic, Blair Margaret Bannerman

Honors Theses

An event-driven Monte Carlo method is used to simulate a simple, nonlinear epidemic. This model illustrates how quickly and to what degree an epidemic spreads through a population. Moreover, it yields information concerning the uncertainties of the epidemic. Some basic assumptions involving the probabilistic dependence of the rate of change of each class in the population must be determined. The rate of infection and the rate of removal from infection are based on case studies found in literary sources. The evolution of the populations is estimated on a time scale that is advanced based on the waiting time. The waiting …

The Saint And Judith Female Conventions In Ouida's Held In Bondage, Strathmore, Friendship, And Moths, Hannah Lacey Bryant Jan 2003

The Saint And Judith Female Conventions In Ouida's Held In Bondage, Strathmore, Friendship, And Moths, Hannah Lacey Bryant

Honors Theses

The following work analyzes the usage Victorian conventions of the saint and Judith figures in Ouida’s female characters in her novels Held in Bondage, Strathmore, Friendship, and Moths. These eight characters are closely related to the stereot3(^ical representations of women in society during the time Ouida wrote; however, as Ouida became more experienced and acquainted with society, her usage of the conventions altered toward realistic rather than representative women. Of the saint figures, only one female, Vere of Moths, escapes from all stereotypes. The remaining three Alma of Held in Bondage, Lucille of Strathmore, and Etoile of Friendship definitive models …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

It is becoming clear that if we are to impact the rate of medical errors it will have to be done at the practicing physician level. The purpose of this project was to survey the attitude of physicians in Alabama concerning their perception of medical error, and to obtain their thoughts and desires for medical education in the area of medical errors. The information will be used in the development of a physician education program.

Foreign Judgments In American And English Courts: A Comparative Analysis, Brian Richard Paige Jan 2003

Foreign Judgments In American And English Courts: A Comparative Analysis, Brian Richard Paige

Seattle University Law Review

Part II of this Comment provides some background on the current American scheme of foreign judgment recognition and enforcement by comparing and contrasting its three major components American common law, the Restatement (Third) of Foreign Relations Law, and the Uniform Foreign Money-Judgments Recognition Act. Part III tracks the English scheme of foreign judgment recognition and enforcement from its common law origin to its more sophisticated and streamlined foreign judgment registration system. Finally, Part IV suggests that the United States could benefit from the implementation of federal legislation that would bring foreign judgment registration procedures to American courts and provide for …
