An Overview Of Aircraft Remote Sensing In Integrated Pest Management, James H. Everitt, Kenneth R. Summy, D. E. Escobar, M. R. Davis Jan 2003

An Overview Of Aircraft Remote Sensing In Integrated Pest Management, James H. Everitt, Kenneth R. Summy, D. E. Escobar, M. R. Davis

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

English: This paper presents four exemplary applications of aerial photography and videography, global positioning system (GPS), and geographic information system (GIS) technologies for detecting, monitoring, and mapping insect infestations in agriculture, forestry, and rangeland areas. Applications demonstrated include detecting and mapping: (1) citrus blackfly (Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby) infestations in citrus orchards; (2) silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring) infestations in cotton; (3) harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex barbatus F. Smith) infestations on rangelands; and (4) western pine beetle (Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte) infestations in a forested area. The integration of a GPS with the video imagery permitted latitude and longitude coordinates of …

To Denmark And Back An Excerpt From The Unpublished Memoirs Of John M. Jensen, Frederik V. Jensen, Peter L. Petersen Jan 2003

To Denmark And Back An Excerpt From The Unpublished Memoirs Of John M. Jensen, Frederik V. Jensen, Peter L. Petersen

The Bridge

The "most influential individual in the United Evangelical Lutheran Church's final twenty-five years" is how synod President William Larsen once described John M. Jensen1, longtime editor of The Ansgar Lutheran, the church's English language periodical. Jensen served the UELC as pastor, translator, historian, and representative, but it was through the pages of The Ansgar Lutheran that he had his greatest impact. Week after week for nearly twenty-five years, he wrote about spiritual matters, church policies and politics, questions of social justice, and events throughout the world, all the while serving full time as a church pastor. During World War II …

The Dies Irae ("Day Of Wrath") And Totentanz ("Dance Of Death"): Medieval Themes Revisited In 19th Century Music And Culture, Erin Brooks Jan 2003

The Dies Irae ("Day Of Wrath") And Totentanz ("Dance Of Death"): Medieval Themes Revisited In 19th Century Music And Culture, Erin Brooks

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

During the pivotal November 2002 football game of Arkansas vs. Georgia in the SEC conference championship, the Georgia marching band struck up their defensive rallying song. Instead of a typical "defense" song, the band played an excerpt of the Gregorian Sequence Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath'') from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Drastically dissociated from its original medieval milieu, this musical Sequence still manages to elicit the same effect of fear and foreboding nearly a thousand years later. Precisely because of its deep musical and cultural roots, the Dies Irae occupies a significant place in history, closely intertwined from early …

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Individual Decision Rules And Emergent Social Norms, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan Butner Jan 2003

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Individual Decision Rules And Emergent Social Norms, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan Butner

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A new theory integrating evolutionary and dynamical approaches is proposed. Following evolutionary models, psychological mechanisms are conceived as conditional decision rules designed to address fundamental problems confronted by human ancestors, with qualitatively different decision rules serving different problem domains and individual differences in decision rules as a function of adaptive and random variation. Following dynamical models, decision mechanisms within individuals are assumed to unfold in dynamic interplay with decision mechanisms of others in social networks. Decision mechanisms in different domains have different dynamic outcomes and lead to different sociospatial geometries. Three series of simulations examining trade-offs in cooperation and mating …

The Public-Use Question As A Takings Problem, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2003

The Public-Use Question As A Takings Problem, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Government officials regularly use the power of eminent domain to benefit private entities, and just as regularly justify their actions with assertions about the need to promote "economic development." Rather, the remarkable thing about these cases is that the courts questioned the government's right to do so. In Hawaii Housing Authority v. Midkiff, the United States Supreme Court reaffirmed that the Fifth Amendment demands broad deference to a government's decision to exercise the power of eminent domain. Midkiff makes clear that "public use" challenges are subject to rational-basis review. That is, so long as a taking can be justified by …

La Doctrine Americaine Et L'Intervention En Iraq, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2003

La Doctrine Americaine Et L'Intervention En Iraq, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

In the days following the September 11 attacks on the United States, members of the Bush administration called for war against Iraq. When this call led to the development of an invasion plan, American legal scholars debated the legal arguments in favor of the war. By the time Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 19, 2003, legal opinions fell into four categories:

- the invasion of Iraq is legal because there is no "viable" rule prohibiting the use of force;

- the invasion is legal because it was authorized by the Security Council and/or because it constitutes an exercise of …
