Out The Loop, Matthew Christian Anderson
Out The Loop, Matthew Christian Anderson
LSU Master's Theses
Often referred to as resembling an architectural blueprint, the screenplay is known for its laconic style. Discarding the subjective abstractionism of a more flowery writing, the screenplay's brevity forces the writer to make use of the physical world of the text to display its underlying currents of thought. This trend in artistic representation, of which the influence has been heatedly discussed since the onset of the cinema, is not stagnant but evolving. The screenwriters of today produce their craft with an increased savoir faire not only in relation to plot and form but also in regards to the aesthetics of …

C.C. Pat Fleming: Houston, Texas, Landscape Architect, Paige Allred Phillips
LSU Master's Theses
C. C. Pat Fleming practiced landscape architecture in Houston and the surrounding South from the 1920s through the 1990s. He came to be considered one of Houston’s preeminent landscape architects, and his role in the profession cannot be overlooked. This thesis traces the evolution of Fleming’s design style over the course of his career, analyzing a selected cross section of his works against three design movements that occurred during his lifetime: the Beaux-Arts tradition, the Colonial Revival movement, and the Modernist movement. For investigating the work of Pat Fleming, the method of historical research is used. A historical context study …

Les Illuminations D'Arthur Rimbaud : Reflexions Sur Neuf Traductions En Anglais (1946-2002), Brian R. Rundgren
Theses : Honours
The aim of the thesis is to analyse nine translations of the Illuminations by Arthur Rimbaud including the latest translation by Wyatt Mason. The objective is to highlight certain difficulties confronted by all translators of poetic texts. The work will highlight some of the qualities and defects in the nine translations. The thesis also aims to give some insight into the extraordinary variety of techniques used by these nine translators. The nine translations of the Illuminations that we have studied in the thesis are those by: Louise Varese (1946,1957), Olivier Bernard (1962,!997), Wallace Fowlie (1966), Enid Rhodes Peschel (1973), Bertrand …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation, conducted February 2000 through April 2001, describes an approach to increasing student motivation that promoted 9th-grade academic success in an inner-city high school of a Southeastern Georgia community. The targeted population was freshman students in a very large, diverse, multicultural environment. The students ranged from the very highest affluent socioeconomic group to the lowest poverty group.
Low performance was evident on standardized measures of student progress upon their entering 9th grade. A lack of motivation for successful learning was evident. The students in this study were in need of extensive help to succeed academically and reach their …
Chalkboard To Smart Board: Improving Computer Competence Among Ellington Middle School Teachers, Barbara J. Ripa
Chalkboard To Smart Board: Improving Computer Competence Among Ellington Middle School Teachers, Barbara J. Ripa
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation report describes a program designed to improve teacher computer competence in Ellington, a rural town in Connecticut. Scores on a state-designed computer competence tool indicated that middle school teachers lacked computer skills. Further investigation indicated an infrequent use of school computers and a lack of knowledge about computer applications and peripherals.
It was apparent that the low level of teacher computer competence could be attributed to several causes: (a) teachers lacked knowledge regarding appropriate computer applications for their classrooms; (b) teachers lacked skill in using computers, various applications, and peripherals such as scanners and Smart Boards; (c) …

Reducing Fighting And Bullying Among Second And Third Grade Students Through Instruction In Peace Education, Cecil W. Scott
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to reduce fighting and bullying among second and third grade students. The behavioral plans used by individual teachers were ineffective. Students were exhibiting deviant behaviors in the form of fighting, bullying, using profanity and name-calling. Children were being placed in time out, and many were internally and externally suspended for antisocial behaviors. Teachers could not help students resolve conflicts using peaceful methods.
The writer developed a Peace Education curriculum to be used by teachers to reduce deviant behaviors in students. They used daily peace and conflict resolution strategies in their classrooms that assisted children to …

The Development And Validation Of A Performance-Based Team Approach To New Teacher Induction At Woodbridge High School, Robert Zega
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to develop an effective new teacher induction program that would address the large number of discipline incidents referred to the administration by the new teachers at Woodbridge High School. The administrators were concerned that these excessive discipline incidents were an indication of a lack of class management strategies displayed by the new teachers. Initial comparisons of student discipline data supported the existence of this problem. The block schedule implemented at Woodbridge High School magnified these discipline problems.
The writer utilized development methodology to produce and validated a supplemental new teacher induction process that attended to …

Latin American Hybrid Constitutionalism: The United States Presidentialism In The Civil Law Melting Pot, Rett R. Ludwikowski
Latin American Hybrid Constitutionalism: The United States Presidentialism In The Civil Law Melting Pot, Rett R. Ludwikowski
Scholarly Articles
Commentators have often suggested that Latin American countries incorporate more features of parliamentary systems or experiment with "mixed" models of governance. This article presents arguments that such a recommendation should be carefully analyzed. First, the article demonstrates that, since the early stages of post-colonial history, the Latin American states modified U.S. presidentialism. The states have already experimented with many features of a parliamentary system, adopted a model of judicial review which was an amalgam of several well-known models, and wrestled with their own ethnic, cultural and legal problems not linked to the U.S. system of governance. Second, the article examines …
Looking For Law In All The Wrong Places: Problems In Applying The Implied Covenant Of Good Faith Performance, Seth W. Goren
Looking For Law In All The Wrong Places: Problems In Applying The Implied Covenant Of Good Faith Performance, Seth W. Goren
University of San Francisco Law Review
Nationally, judicial decisions and commentators alike have repeatedly lamented courts' misinterpretation and misapplication of contractual good faith as leading to irreconcilable decisions. Often, courts have handed down broad pronouncements on the subject and subsequently reversed or scaled back their own decisions, or have seen their conclusions overturned by statute. This has made the law on the subject in numerous jurisdictions unstable, obscure, and perplexing in ways almost identical to Pennsylvania law.

The Durban Conference Against Racism And Everyone's Responsibilities, J.A. Lindgren Alvez
University of San Francisco Law Review
WHEN DELEGATES AND observers to the third United Nations conference against racism left the premises in Durban, South Africa, exhausted and still stunned by the difficulties they had faced, they did not have a hint of what was soon to happen. They knew that only by means of accommodation and last minute procedural maneuvers had they managed to reach a "consensus" on the final documents. This should have been enough to tone down any possible enthusiasm. Nevertheless, for most of them, results had undoubtedly had positive aspects. There were reasons to believe the Conference had been worthwhile.
Immigration, Civil Rights, And Coalitions For Social Justice, Kevin R. Johnson
Immigration, Civil Rights, And Coalitions For Social Justice, Kevin R. Johnson
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
The treatment of "aliens," particularly noncitizens of color, under the U.S. immigration laws reveals volumes about domestic race relations in the nation. A deeply complicated, often volatile, relationship exists between racism directed toward U.S. citizens and that aimed at noncitizens. The United States has a long history of treating racial minorities in the United States harshly, at times savagely. Noncitizen racial minorities, as foreigners not part of the national community, generally have been subject to similar, although not identical, cruelties but also have suffered deportation, indefinite detention, and more. One need look to further than the treatment of Arab and …

Teachers Beware! You May Be Liable Under Proposition 227: California Teachers Association V. State Board Of Education, Jacinto Zavala
University of San Francisco Law Review
The parental enforcement provision of Proposition 227 has caused uncertainty among educators as to how much English they must use to avoid personal liability." To complicate matters, the State Board of Education has refused to define "nearly all" and "overwhelmingly," giving local school districts a great deal of flexibility in defining the terms.

Gender, Work, And The Nafta Labor Side Agreement, Kate E. Andrias
University of San Francisco Law Review
Women, especially women of color, are the most exploited laborers in the global economy generally, and in North America specifically. Women predominate among maquiladoras in export-processing zones in Mexico and in sweatshops in the United States. Female laborers, such as office cleaners and chambermaids in luxury hotels, support the American institutions of international finance, in today's "global cities."

Refugee Policy And Cultural Identity: In The Voice Of Hmong And Iu Mien Young Adults, Bill Ong Hing
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
U.S. refugee admission and resettlement policies have helped to shape the cultural identities of refugees in America in unanticipated ways. In this article, the author examines the effects of these policies on the young adult members of two small Laotian refugee groups-the Hmong and the Iu Mien. After reviewing the ad hoc admission and resettlement programs of the federal government, the author reviews a collection of interviews of young college students and discovers a range of attitudes on identity, mainstream culture, religion, and the desire to maintain ethnic culture. The cultural identity being developed by Ju Mien and Hmong young …

This study examined the perceptions of Information Systems (IS) developers from the U.S. and Korea with regards to the strategies that are considered crucial for IS success. The results of a principal component analysis revealed that the IS development strategies could be classified into four categories: (1) Organizational Integration, (2) Team Member Characteristics, (3) Project Leader Traits, and (4) Project Development Management. ANOVA results indicated that developers from both countries viewed Organizational Integration as the most important component and Project Development Management as the least important component. However, while IS developers in the U.S. viewed Team Member Characteristics as the …

Russian Trade Prospects In Smyrna: An 1812 Consular Report, Theophilus C. Prousis
Russian Trade Prospects In Smyrna: An 1812 Consular Report, Theophilus C. Prousis
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Documents on Russian commerce in the Black Sea and the Levant offer eyewitness description, firsthand observation and authentic information. These qualities, to varying degrees, are evinced in this translated memorandum penned by tsarist vice-consul Carlo A. Marracciny in Smyrna in December 1812 and addressed to Foreign Minister Rumiantsev. The Marracciny report merits attention by scholars of Russia's Eastern policy as a reminder that primary sources on Russian trade, and on wider tsarist aims, in the Near East warrant collection and presentation in an accessible format for students and scholars alike. This particular document might very well become a small piece …
