This essay sketches out the complications of a performative pedagogy in the context of a basic communication course, specifically examining how the course negotiates and constitutes what communication scholars have called "educational risk." To do this, a collage of narratives are provided--a series of images which, when seen in totality, might generate a conversation about how communication studies could address the intersections of risk, critical performative pedagogy, and the classrooms of our basic communication courses. Despite all the critical attention jazz has received in recent years from scholars in other fields---literature, history, political science, cultural studies---very little headway has been made in understanding what jazz aesthetics are and how they might inform other forms of cultural and artistic expression. Part of the difficulty lies in the time-bound, performative nature of the artform and the fact that it is primarily a non-discursive means of expression; that is to say, jazz does not translate well.

This research endeavors to determine the ramifications of this new, grandiose, international order on a micro-political level through the study of four political parties in Spain. The parties include the People's Party (PP) and the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE), both with a national base, and Convergence and Union (CiU) of Catalonia and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), which are two of the most influential nationalist parties. This paper is a response to continued discussion about the necessary and sufficient characteristics of a claim to 'ethnographic method' when made by researchers in the Media and Cultural Studies traditions. Many of the seminal studies informing-particularly-audience studies research have claimed that they were 'ethnographic'. But is this a variety of ethnographic that an anthropologist would recognise? Purification And Antioxidant Activities Of Soybean Isoflavones, Qiju Wu

LSU Master's Theses

An efficient procedure was developed and used to extract and purify isoflavones from defatted soy flour. The purity of the final product reached 94%. The antioxidant activities of soybean isoflavones (genistein and daidzein purchased from Sigma Chemical Co, and a mixture of isoflavone glycosides extracted from defatted soy flour) were investigated by a cholesterol oxidation model accelerated by 2,2’-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH). All components exhibited very high antioxidant activities in the inhibition of cholesterol oxidation. Genistein had higher inhibition to the formation of 5,6beta-epoxycholesterol (5,6b-EP) and 7-ketocholesterol (7-keto), while no significant difference was found between the antioxidant activities of daidzein and …

The main objective of this dissertation was to provide researchers interested in the history and evolution of "comparative literature" with a collection of references delineating the evolution of the concept and the development of academic departments dedicated to its study. The paper includes a first section describing the main issues contributing to the "identity crisis" with which studies and departments defining themselves as "comparative" were consistently confronted ever since the term was coined. Dale Earnhardt's death provided an opportunity to examine the merchandiser phenomena in the sport of NASCAR racing. When Dale Earnhardt died, buyers and sellers were exchanging memorabilia at an unprecedented rate. The price of his memorabilia escalated significantly after his death. The purpose of this study was to examine the price fluctuation of selected memorabilia over a one year period. Results indicated that prices fluctuated dramatically, especially by type of merchandise and where the merchandise was sold. The prices stabilized and shifted dramatically based upon significant events.

Visions in Leisure and Business

The sports memorabilia marketplace has experienced exponential growth since the advent of Internet auction sites such as eBay. While collectors were once constrained by local encounters with personal collectors, the Internet now facilitates buying and selling on an international scale. This study explores the phenomenon of collecting sports memorabilia as it has been transformed historically as well as more recently. Scholarly literature suggests that fascination with the famous may have begun in ancient Greece, although contemporary studies of celebrity examine a broader scope of subjects in addition to an odd array of items collected.

This paper attempts to examine the issues surrounding the role of national culture bias and the concept of distance among Hofstede's (1980) cultural dimensions on the ability to reach integrative agreements in international business arrangements between firms. Relational models of negotiating and the role of culture are presented as well as several managerial implications and propositions for future research.

Expatriate Assignments: Understanding The Skill, Ability, Personality, And Behavioral Requirements Of Working Abroad, Shung J. Shin, Frederick P. Morgeson, Michael A. Campion

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

It is often assumed that adjustment to the local working environment is essential for expatriate assignments. As such, it is surprising there is little empirical research identifying how skill, ability, and personality requirements might differ between expatriate and domestic jobs and how cultural values are related to expatriate behaviors. In a large sample of professionals (N = 1,312) working in comparable jobs in 156 different countries, we found higher social and perceptual skill requirements in expatriate jobs. In two sub-samples (n = 420 and 468), we found that expatriate jobs also have higher reasoning ability and adjustment and achievement orientation …

During the pivotal November 2002 football game of Arkansas vs. Georgia in the SEC conference championship, the Georgia marching band struck up their defensive rallying song. Instead of a typical "defense" song, the band played an excerpt of the Gregorian Sequence Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath'') from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Drastically dissociated from its original medieval milieu, this musical Sequence still manages to elicit the same effect of fear and foreboding nearly a thousand years later. One of the most important questions in corporate governance is how directors of public corporations can be motivated to serve the interests of the firm. Directors frequently hold only small stakes in the companies they manage. Moreover, a variety of legal rules and contractual arrangements insulate them from liability for business failures. Why then should we expect them to do a good job?

Conventional corporate scholarship has great difficulty wrestling with this question, in large part because conventional scholarship usually adopts the economist's assumption that directors are rational actors motivated purely by self-interest. This homo economicus model of behavior may …
