Fabrication Of Cell Culture Scaffolds Using Micro/Nanotechnologies To Study The Attachment And Alignment Of Smooth Muscle Cells, Mengyan Li

This dissertation elaborates the design and fabrication of in vitro cell culture scaffolds using microfabrication and electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly (LbL) technologies, and develops the so-called layer-by-layer lift-off (LbL-LO) technique to control surface topography, surface properties, and underlying architectures of the scaffolds. Smooth muscle cells were cultured on the fabricated scaffolds with gelatin, fibronectin, and polyelectrolytes (PSS, PDDA, PAH, and PEI) as surface materials, multilayer polyelectrolytes as architectures, deposited in strip- and square-patterns. It was found that the exposed surface materials, which have different charge, hydrophobicity, and chemical structure (e.g., amino acid sequence), affect the adhesion of smooth muscle cells. Cells …

In 1913 Willa Cather created a female protagonist who is single, independent, entrepreneurial, managerial, strong willed, wealthy and in love with the land of south-central Nebraska. This character offered a new vision for women at the turn of the twentieth century. Cather's fictional construction of gender, as well as her own experience, embody the contradictions present in the roles society offered women. One can read O Pioneers! as a cultural seismometer, one that picks up tremors along various social fault lines and then expresses them within a particular framework held by many people of her economic and social position. In the present study, the Beck Anxiety Inventory (Beck, Epstein, Brown, & Steer, 1988), Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory (Peterson & Reiss, 1992), the Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale (Holmes & Rahe, 1967), Northern Plains Bicultural Inventory (Allen & French, 1994), and a health questionnaire were administered to investigate the relationship between anxiety, stressful events, health, and cultural participation among 147 Native American adults from a Midwestern reservation community. The results of these self-report measures indicated that, as has been found in the majority culture, stressful life events predicted physical health problems and self-reported anxiety. These are the words of The Preacher (a character in Frank Herbert's Children of Dune who is simultaneously the metaphorical reincarnation of the fallen prophet, Muad'Dib, and the self-exiled Emperor, Paul Atreides) as he addresses the masses enslaved by their devotion to his messianic Empire. These words, culled from the pages of science fiction, are more than mere exposition from Herbert's narrative, they point toward several important conditions facing the political world today. These conditions concern certain failures of democracy and effects of globalization spawned, in part, by an intensification of imperialist expansion in the name of democracy.

The purpose of this research was to review a significant body of literature that related to music and arts education in the context of community engagement. An examination of the literature identified several issues affecting the engagement of communities in arts education pertaining to arts education policies, the role of arts organizations and the relationship between schools and communities. The summation of this research included an overview of models of successful collaborations between the public school and community institutions at national, state, and local levels in the United States with implications of future reform to the arts education policy.

Reflections On The Traditional Knowledge Debate, Shubha Ghosh

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article argues that the traditional knowledge debate is a continuation of historical tensions between the Global North and South, centered on ownership and control of resources. These tensions manifest in intellectual property (IP) law, particularly in the clash between market culture and communitarian, gift-based cultures. The author emphasizes that while IP law is often seen as a tool for commodification, it can also serve strategic purposes, such as fostering domestic industry and promoting sovereignty, especially through the flexible framework provided by the TRIPS Agreement.
