Establishing A Quantitative Foundation For Exactly Constrained Design, Alisha M. Hammond Dec 2003

Establishing A Quantitative Foundation For Exactly Constrained Design, Alisha M. Hammond

Theses and Dissertations

Exactly constrained (EC) design is a robust design method which can be used for mechanical assemblies. It entails using the minimum number of constraints to eliminate all desired motion.

While found by some engineers in industry to have many benefits (including robust assembly, no binding or play, ease of assembly, and the ability to tolerate the wear of parts), EC designs remain somewhat unrecognized by academia. One reason for this minimal exposure may be the lack of a quantitative foundation for such designs. This thesis describes the history and current background for EC designs, and it also begins to develop …

Self-Aligned Mechanical Attachment Of Carbon Nanotubes To Silicon Dioxide Structures By Selective Silicon Dioxide Chemical-Vapor Deposition, Jed D. Whittaker, Ghaleb A. Husseini, Matthew A. Linford, Robert C. Davis, Markus Brink Dec 2003

Self-Aligned Mechanical Attachment Of Carbon Nanotubes To Silicon Dioxide Structures By Selective Silicon Dioxide Chemical-Vapor Deposition, Jed D. Whittaker, Ghaleb A. Husseini, Matthew A. Linford, Robert C. Davis, Markus Brink

Faculty Publications

A self-aligned thin-film deposition technique was developed to mechanically attach carbon nanotubes to surfaces for the fabrication of structurally robust nanotube-based nanomechanical devices. Single-walled carbon nanotubes were grown by thermal chemical-vapor deposition (CVD) across 150-nm-wide SiO2 trenches. The nanotubes were mechanically attached to the trench tops by selective silicon tetraacetate-based SiO2 CVD. No film was deposited on the nanotubes where they were suspended across the trenches.

These materials, which can be synthesized to have either very high or intermediate coercivities, have many applications in electric power, transportation, and information-storage industries. There is great interest in further development of understanding and application of these materials. Following are brief discussions of recent research highlights for the present grant.

Selecting Appropriate Product Concepts For Manufacture In Developing Countries, Danielle Johnson Dec 2003

Selecting Appropriate Product Concepts For Manufacture In Developing Countries, Danielle Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

There is a noticeable lack of production of indigenously engineered and manufactured products in Less Developed Countries (LDC's). Few products developed in these LDC's could be viable in competitive markets or even sold as components and supplies to other manufacturers of competitive goods. Assumintg that these less developed countries do not innovate and manufacture because they cannot, the next logical question to ask is why can they not?

This thesis looks at the problems of manufacture and design in LDC's from the standpoint of Product Development. It begins by looking at development theories, namely top down and bottom up and …

Multicolour Observations Of V404 Cyg With Ultracam, T. Shahbaz, V. S. Dhillon, T. R. Marsh, C. Zurita, C. A. Haswell, P. A. Charles, R. I. Hynes, J. Casares Dec 2003

Multicolour Observations Of V404 Cyg With Ultracam, T. Shahbaz, V. S. Dhillon, T. R. Marsh, C. Zurita, C. A. Haswell, P. A. Charles, R. I. Hynes, J. Casares

Faculty Publications

We present high-time-resolution multicolour observations of the quiescent soft X-ray transient V404 Cyg obtained with ULTRACAM. Superimposed on the ellipsoidal modulation of the secondary star are large flares on time-scales of a few hours, as well as several distinct rapid flares on time-scales of tens of minutes. The rapid flares, most of which show further variability and unresolved peaks, cover shorter time-scales than those reported in previous observations. The power density spectrum of the 5-s time-resolution data shows a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) feature at 0.78 mHz (= 21.5 min). Assuming this periodicity represents the Keplerian period at the transition between …

International Marine Environment Law: A Case Study In The Wider Caribbean Region, Benedict C. Sheehy Dec 2003

International Marine Environment Law: A Case Study In The Wider Caribbean Region, Benedict C. Sheehy

ExpressO

Abstract: This study examines the effectiveness of international marine environment law in controlling and abating contamination of the marine environment in the Wider Caribbean Region. The main international agreement covering the region is the Cartagena Convention which came into force in 1983. This convention, initiated by the UNEP under its Regional Seas Program, is considered one of the most successful of the programs. The study examines that claim in light of events since the adoption of the Cartagena Convention by the majority of nations bordering on the region. Mexico, because of its stature as a leading Latin American nation, is …

Search For High-Energy Gamma Rays From An X-Ray-Selected Blazar Sample, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Dec 2003

Search For High-Energy Gamma Rays From An X-Ray-Selected Blazar Sample, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Our understanding of blazars has been greatly increased in recent years by extensive multiwavelength observations, particularly in the radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray regions. Over the past decade the Whipple 10 m telescope has contributed to this with the detection of five BL Lacertae objects at very high gamma-ray energies. The combination of multiwavelength data has shown that blazars follow a well-defined sequence in terms of their broadband spectral properties. Together with providing constraints on emission models, this information has yielded a means by which potential sources of TeV emission may be identified and predictions made as to their possible gamma-ray …

Marginal Modeling Of Multilevel Binary Data With Time-Varying Covariates, Diana Miglioretti, Patrick Heagerty Dec 2003

Marginal Modeling Of Multilevel Binary Data With Time-Varying Covariates, Diana Miglioretti, Patrick Heagerty

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We propose and compare two approaches for regression analysis of multilevel binary data when clusters are not necessarily nested: a GEE method that relies on a working independence assumption coupled with a three-step method for obtaining empirical standard errors; and a likelihood-based method implemented using Bayesian computational techniques. Implications of time-varying endogenous covariates are addressed. The methods are illustrated using data from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium to estimate mammography accuracy from a repeatedly screened population.

Survival Model Predictive Accuracy And Roc Curves, Patrick Heagerty, Yingye Zheng Dec 2003

Survival Model Predictive Accuracy And Roc Curves, Patrick Heagerty, Yingye Zheng

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The predictive accuracy of a survival model can be summarized using extensions of the proportion of variation explained by the model, or R^2, commonly used for continuous response models, or using extensions of sensitivity and specificity which are commonly used for binary response models.

In this manuscript we propose new time-dependent accuracy summaries based on time-specific versions of sensitivity and specificity calculated over risk sets. We connect the accuracy summaries to a previously proposed global concordance measure which is a variant of Kendall's tau. In addition, we show how standard Cox regression output can be used to obtain estimates of …

Partly Conditional Survival Models For Longitudinal Data, Yingye Zheng, Patrick Heagerty Dec 2003

Partly Conditional Survival Models For Longitudinal Data, Yingye Zheng, Patrick Heagerty

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

It is common in longitudinal studies to collect information on the time until a key clinical event, such as death, and to measure markers of patient health at multiple follow-up times. One approach to the joint analysis of survival and repeated measures data adopts a time-varying covariate regression model for the event time hazard. Using this standard approach the instantaneous risk of death at time t is specified as a possibly semi-parametric function of covariate information that has accrued through time t. In this manuscript we decouple the time scale for modeling the hazard from the time scale for accrual …

Semiparametric Estimation Of Time-Dependent: Roc Curves For Longitudinal Marker Data, Yingye Zheng, Patrick Heagerty Dec 2003

Semiparametric Estimation Of Time-Dependent: Roc Curves For Longitudinal Marker Data, Yingye Zheng, Patrick Heagerty

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

One approach to evaluating the strength of association between a longitudinal marker process and a key clinical event time is through predictive regression methods such as a time-dependent covariate hazard model. For example, a time-varying covariate Cox model specifies the instantaneous risk of the event as a function of the time-varying marker and additional covariates. In this manuscript we explore a second complementary approach which characterizes the distribution of the marker as a function of both the measurement time and the ultimate event time. Our goal is to flexibly extend the standard diagnostic accuracy concepts of sensitivity and specificity to …

Thermodynamic Characterization Of The Binding Of Activator Of G Protein Signaling 3 (Ags3) And Peptides Derived From Ags3 With G Alpha I1, Anirban Adhikari, Stephen R. Sprang Dec 2003

Thermodynamic Characterization Of The Binding Of Activator Of G Protein Signaling 3 (Ags3) And Peptides Derived From Ags3 With G Alpha I1, Anirban Adhikari, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Activator of G protein signaling 3 (AGS3) is a guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitor (GDI) that contains four G protein regulatory (GPR) or GoLoco motifs in its C-terminal domain. The entire C-terminal domain (AGS3-C) as well as certain peptides corresponding to individual GPR motifs of AGS3 bound to G alpha i1 and inhibited the binding of GTP by stabilizing the GDP-bound conformation of G alpha i1. The stoichiometry, free energy, enthalpy, and dissociation constant for binding of AGS3-C to G alpha i1 were determined using isothermal titration calorimetry. AGS3-C possesses two apparent high affinity (Kd approximately 20 nm) and two apparent …

Three Attempts At Cold War Neutralization: Its Success In Austria And Laos And Its Failure In Vietnam, Benjamin Crawford Dec 2003

Three Attempts At Cold War Neutralization: Its Success In Austria And Laos And Its Failure In Vietnam, Benjamin Crawford

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

During the Cold War, the inherent mistrust between the United States and the Soviet Union kept the two superpowers from cooperating even on many projects that might have proven mutually beneficial. Nevertheless, they were willing to work together at least occasionally; two such examples are the neutralizations of Austria (in 1955) and of Laos (in 1962). Despite very different world orders in those two countries at those times, the weaker superpowers in each contest, the Soviets in Austria and the Americans in Laos, took very similar actions. They followed the same three-stage process from the outbreak of the dispute to …

Lekhost A Tize: An Experiment In Film Production Methodology, Talley Mulligan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Proliferation and convergence of new technologies as well as the diverse media it has given rise to have had a dramatic impact on the theory and practice of contemporary filmmaking. This trend also holds considerable implication for the range of cinematic forms likely to be embraced in the future as well as the methodologies necessarily exploited in their making. The formal and expressive possibilities inherent in the climate of experimentation existing at this unique juncture in history encourage out-of-the-ordinary solutions to long-standing problems while begging important questions regarding the process and goal of filmmaking. Taking the films of the Czech …
