Atca, Doe V. Unocal: A Paquete Habana Approach To The Rescue, John Haberstroh Sep 2003

Atca, Doe V. Unocal: A Paquete Habana Approach To The Rescue, John Haberstroh

ExpressO

The article's centerpiece is the Ninth Circuit litigation (Doe v. Unocal) charging Unocal Corp. with complicity in the Burma’s government’s use of forced labor. The article first examines the Alien Tort Claims Act, under which the action is brought, through an exploration of that statute’s original purpose and historical context. The article then looks at the modern revival of ATCA in international human rights claims, and finally closely considers the Unocal litigation, in particular the September 18, 2002 decision favoring the plaintiffs. (The 2002 decision is undergoing review by an en banc panel of the Ninth Circuit, with the panel’s …

Direct Determination Of Kinetic Rates From Single-Molecule Photon Arrival Trajectories Using Hidden Markov Models, Michael Andrec, Ronald M. Levy, David Talaga Sep 2003

Direct Determination Of Kinetic Rates From Single-Molecule Photon Arrival Trajectories Using Hidden Markov Models, Michael Andrec, Ronald M. Levy, David Talaga

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The kinetic rates of single-molecule photon trajectories were determined using hidden Markov model (HMM). The data from single-molecule experiments were in the form of photon trajectories consisting of arrival times and wavelength information on individual photons. HMM was used as an alternative to higher-order correlation function analysis for the detection of conformational memory.

Directional Solidification And Convection In Small Diameter Crucibles, Jun Chen, P. K. Sung, D. R. Poirier, H. C. De Groh Iii Sep 2003

Directional Solidification And Convection In Small Diameter Crucibles, Jun Chen, P. K. Sung, D. R. Poirier, H. C. De Groh Iii

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Pb–2.2 wt.% Sb alloy was directionally solidified in 1, 2, 3 and 7 mm diameter crucibles. Pb–Sb alloy presents a solutally unstable case. Under plane–front conditions, the resulting macrosegregation along the solidified length indicates that convection persists even in the 1 mm diameter crucible. Al–2 wt.% Cu alloy was directionally solidified because this alloy was expected to be stable with respect to convection. Nevertheless, the resulting macrosegregation pattern and the microstructure in solidified examples indicated the presence of convection. Simulations performed for both alloys show that convection persists for crucibles as small as 0.6 mm of diameter …

Diversity And Production Of Phytoplankton In The Offshore Mississippi River Plume And Coastal Environments, Boris Wawrik Sep 2003

Diversity And Production Of Phytoplankton In The Offshore Mississippi River Plume And Coastal Environments, Boris Wawrik

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

River discharge leads to extensive phytoplankton blooms often observed in ocean color satellite images to extend far into the open ocean as high chlorophyll plumes. We investigated diversity, distribution and ecology of phytoplankton populations in the Mississippi River plume, both spatially and in the water column using molecular tools. A method was developed for the quantification of diatom/pelagophyte rbcL (large subunit of Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase) mRNA using quantitative PCR and applied to cultures and in the plume. The vertical structure of phytoplankton species in the Mississippi River plume was described by flow cytometry, pigments, rbcL mRNA and rbcL cDNA libraries. High …

Faculty Publications

The thickness of seasonal CO2 frost that covers the north pole of Mars during the winter and spring seasons is studied using gamma ray and neutron data measured using the gamma ray spectrometer suite of instruments aboard Mars Odyssey. The resultant seasonal variation of CO2 ice/frost thickness for latitudes greater than +85° is in close agreement (within 9% at maximum) with those predicted using all three major Mars general circulation models presently in use. These observed CO2 ice results are significantly different from those inferred from the Mars Obiter Laser Altimeter experiment aboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS). A possible explanation …
