Ab Initio Theoretical Studies Of Potential Energy Surfaces In The Photodissociation Of The Vinyl Radical. I. Ã State Dissociation, Peng Zhang, Stephan Irle, Keiji Morokuma, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanism of photodissociation of the vinyl radical, C2H3 was studied with high-level ab initio methods. Geometry optimizations of stationary points and surface crossing seams were performed with complete active space self-consistent field method. Both internal conversion and intersystem crossing channels which bring the excited vinyl radical down to ground state potential energy surface were identified.

Automatic Video Summarization By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang Oct 2003

Automatic Video Summarization By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a unified approach for summarization based on the analysis of video structures and video highlights. Our approach emphasizes both the content balance and perceptual quality of a summary. Normalized cut algorithm is employed to globally and optimally partition a video into clusters. A motion attention model based on human perception is employed to compute the perceptual quality of shots and clusters. The clusters, together with the computed attention values, form a temporal graph similar to Markov chain that inherently describes the evolution and perceptual importance of video clusters. In our application, the flow of a temporal graph is …

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Capacitative Calcium Entry Blockers, Thadigiri Celina Mala Oct 2003

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Capacitative Calcium Entry Blockers, Thadigiri Celina Mala

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Studies have shown that 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2-APB) inhibits thrombin-mediated influx of Ca2 + through store-operated calcium channels in human platelets. Based on this molecule, two sets (boron analogues and the non-boron analogues) were synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR and CHN analysis and evaluated in human platelets to block thrombin-induced [Ca2+] elevation.

The synthesis of the non-boron compounds was performed in a simple one step process. According to the literature, some of these compounds were synthesized previously by a complicated two-step process.

All the compounds synthesized were tested for biological activity and the results showed that they …

On-Station Production Of Native Speargrass Hay In Western Australia, G L. Krebs, Robert R. Rouda, S P. Van Wyngaarden Oct 2003

On-Station Production Of Native Speargrass Hay In Western Australia, G L. Krebs, Robert R. Rouda, S P. Van Wyngaarden

Bulletins 4000 -

This report documents the practical and economic feasibility of on-station harvesting and production of speargrass hay and haylage and its subsequent feeding to cattle and sheep in the extensive regions of south-eastern Western Australia. Four hundred and ten bales weighing an average 275 kg were produced from a total harvested area of 40.6 ha in the vicinity of Duck Dam on Kanandah Station. In the lead up to harvesting, seasonal conditions were among the best on record. Half of the bales produced were further processed into haylage. Two feeding trials, involving wethers at Arubiddy and steers at Kanandah, were undertaken …

Hydrographic Science Research Center

In September 2001, the University of Southern Mississippi, in conjunction with the United States Navy, established an Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) Laboratory to conduct research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) on the capabilities and limitations of electronic charting systems, data, display, and updating services required for U.S. Navy and allied operations.  To help attain the Navy’s goal of Fleet-wide implementation of an ECDIS-N capability by 2004, the ECDIS Lab is used to conduct quality control and testing of electronic chart products produced by NAVOCEANO and other government agencies.   Additionally, the lab is helping the Navy to gain …

In November 2001, member states of the World Trade Organization (WTO) approved the proposal to admit China to the international trading body. After fifteen years of exhaustive negotiations, China finally became the 143rd member of the WTO on December 11, 2001. To reflect on this event, this panel brings together six China experts to explore the ramifications of China's accession to the WTO. Among the issues addressed are whether China is making progress in its compliance with the WTO requirements, whether China is suffering setbacks in the socio-economic arena, whether there are any prospects for democratic reforms and stronger human …

Four Common Misconceptions About Copyright Piracy, Peter K. Yu Oct 2003

Four Common Misconceptions About Copyright Piracy, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Copyright piracy is one of the most difficult, yet important, transnational problems in the twenty-first century. Although legal literature has discussed copyright piracy extensively, commentators rarely offer a "grand unified theory" on this global problem. Rather, they give nuanced analyses, discussing the many aspects of the problem-political, social, economic, cultural, and historical.

This nuanced discussion, however, is missing in the current public debate. To capture the readers' emotion and to generate support for proposed legislative and executive actions, the debate often oversimplifies the complicated picture by overexagerrating a particular aspect of the piracy problem or by offering an abbreviated, easy-to-understand, …

In the early 1970s, Sulfolobus was first isolated by Thomas Brock and co-workers from sulfur-rich acidic hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. Sulfolobus became one of the model organisms of Archaea in general, and of Crenarchaea in particular. Many of its unusual physiological characteristics have been investigated, and several of its thermostable enzymes have been studied in considerable detail. For fundamental reasons, and because of its potential for industrial applications, Sulfolobus has been selected for a genome sequence project. The recent completion of the Sulfolobus solfataricus genome has set the stage for a series of postgenome research lines that will …

Corporate Social Responsibility Reputation Effects On Mba Job Choice: Controlling For Region Of Origin, David B. Montgomery, Catherine A. Ramus Oct 2003

Corporate Social Responsibility Reputation Effects On Mba Job Choice: Controlling For Region Of Origin, David B. Montgomery, Catherine A. Ramus

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In a preliminary study with 279 MBA’s from two European and three North American business schools we find that reputation-related attributes of caring about employees, environmental sustainability, community/stakeholder relations, and ethical products and services are important in job choice decisions. We use an adaptive conjoint analysis survey tool to discover the relative weighting of a new set of social responsibility job search criteria, including these attributes with traditional job search criteria like financial package, geographical location, etc. In addition, our results show that more than ninety percent of the MBAs in the sample were willing to forgo financial benefits in …

Moorean Absurdity And Conscious Belief, John N. Williams Oct 2003

Moorean Absurdity And Conscious Belief, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

G. E. Moore observed that to for me to assert, “I went to the pictures last Tuesday but I don’t believe that I did” would be “absurd” (1942: 543). Over half a century later, the explanation of the nature of this absurdity remains problematic. Such assertions are unlike semantically odd Liar-type assertions such as “What I’m now saying is not true” since my Moorean assertion might be true: you may consistently imagine a situation in which I went to the pictures last Tuesday but fail to believe that I did. Moreover, if you contradict my assertion then your words, “If …
