A Computer-Based Articulation Training Aid For Short Words (Cata), Mukund Devarajan Oct 2003

A Computer-Based Articulation Training Aid For Short Words (Cata), Mukund Devarajan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Several improvements in the vowel articulation training aid (VATA) are described, as well as the efforts to extend the visual feedback system to operate with short words in the form of consonant, vowel and consonant (CVC). The extended version of the visual feedback system is referred to as CATA (Computer-based Articulation Training Aid); the vowel version of the aid (VATA) only operates with ten American English monopthong vowels. Improvements in VATA include the use of a neural network (NN) recognizer method to prune a large database of vowel recordings to eliminate noisy and/or mispronounced tokens. The spectral jitter problem, previously …

Brownian Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Ion Throughput During Cellular Electroporation, Juan A. Gonzalez-Cuevas Oct 2003

Brownian Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Ion Throughput During Cellular Electroporation, Juan A. Gonzalez-Cuevas

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the present research work is to analyze the flow of ions through pores formed in the plasma membrane of biological cells during electroporation. In this regard, simulations have been conducted to track the movement of ions in 3-D space based on a Brownian dynamics model, which is mostly deterministic but has some stochastic properties to account for ionic scattering. From the Brownian dynamics simulations, it has been possible to estimate the pore's conductance as well as transport parameters such as the diffusion coefficient and mobility within the pore region, of which there is no experimental data currently …

Leadership Style And Performance In Telework: Examining The Influence Of Trust, Rebecca D. Vandever Oct 2003

Leadership Style And Performance In Telework: Examining The Influence Of Trust, Rebecca D. Vandever

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study examines the relationship between leadership and performance for teleworkers. Secondary data analysis was used to examine the effects of the Full Range Leadership Theory on the task and contextual performance of 127 teleworkers. Moderated regression analyses show that affect-based trust only moderates the relationship between laissez-faire leadership and task performance. Mediation analyses show that affect-based trust partially mediates the relationship between all three types of leadership and two types of performance. This study shows that affect-based trust is an important element of the relationship between leaders and teleworkers. Future research should further examine the influence of trust …

Opposing Excessive Use Of Employer Bargaining Power In Mandatory Arbitration Agreements Through Collective Employee Actions, Michael Z. Green Oct 2003

Opposing Excessive Use Of Employer Bargaining Power In Mandatory Arbitration Agreements Through Collective Employee Actions, Michael Z. Green

Faculty Scholarship

When you review the modern employment relationship and the role of contract, you have to start with the default position of employment-at-will, which allows an employer, in general, to terminate an employee for good reason, bad reason, or no reason at all. A number of exceptions to the employment-at-will rule exist, including tort and statutory employment discrimination claims that allow employees to seek legal remedies and punitive damage awards from juries. As these exceptions have developed outside of contract law, employers have responded by a major contractual effort to shift these disputes away from the courts and into arbitration. The …

Deep-Water Turbidites As Holocene Earthquake Proxies: The Cascadia Subduction Zone And Northern San Andreas Fault Systems, Chris Goldfinger, C. Hans Nelson, Joel E. Johnson Oct 2003

Deep-Water Turbidites As Holocene Earthquake Proxies: The Cascadia Subduction Zone And Northern San Andreas Fault Systems, Chris Goldfinger, C. Hans Nelson, Joel E. Johnson

Faculty Publications

New stratigraphic evidence from the Cascadia margin demonstrates that 13 earthquakes ruptured the margin from Vancouver Island to at least the California border following the catastrophic eruption of Mount Mazama. These 13 events have occurred with an average repeat time of ?? 600 years since the first post-Mazama event ?? 7500 years ago. The youngest event ?? 300 years ago probably coincides with widespread evidence of coastal subsidence and tsunami inundation in buried marshes along the Cascadia coast. We can extend the Holocene record to at least 9850 years, during which 18 events correlate along the same region. The pattern …

Strengthening Science’S Voice At Epa, E. Donald Elliott Oct 2003

Strengthening Science’S Voice At Epa, E. Donald Elliott

Law and Contemporary Problems

Elliott considers the problem of institutional reforms to enhance the role of science in EPA decisionmaking. He asserts that science is underrepresented in policymaking at the EPA and that the quality of decisions at the margins would be improved by giving science somewhat greater influence.

Law And Engineering: In Search Of The Law-Science Problem, Jerry L. Mashaw Oct 2003

Law And Engineering: In Search Of The Law-Science Problem, Jerry L. Mashaw

Law and Contemporary Problems

Lawyers and scientists both have the intellectual conceit that a well-defined problem is not only a necessary, but almost a sufficient, condition for a successful solution. Mashaw examines the applied science of engineering in the context of health and safety regulation, focusing on the law-science interface at the NHTSA.

The “Bad Science” Fiction: Reclaiming The Debate Over The Role Of Science In Public Health And Environmental Regulation, Wendy E. Wagner Oct 2003

The “Bad Science” Fiction: Reclaiming The Debate Over The Role Of Science In Public Health And Environmental Regulation, Wendy E. Wagner

Law and Contemporary Problems

Wagner argues that the good-science reforms miss the mark and have the potential to cause significant damage to already crippled administrative processes. Background information is presented relating to the sources of dissatisfaction with regulatory science and how the three most popular reforms purport to address these concerns.

On The Prospect Of “Daubertizing” Judicial Review Of Risk Assessment, Thomas O. Mcgarity Oct 2003

On The Prospect Of “Daubertizing” Judicial Review Of Risk Assessment, Thomas O. Mcgarity

Law and Contemporary Problems

Lawyers for companies subject to federal health, safety and environmental regulation hope that stringent substantive judicial review will relieve their clients of the burdens of much regulation without the need for troublesome legislative battles they seem unable to win. McGarity argues that assigning a Daubert-like (Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals Inc) gatekeeper role to courts engaged in judicial review of agency risk assessments is a profoundly bad idea.

Accounting For Science: The Independence Of Public Research In The New, Subterranean Administrative Law, Donald T. Hornstein

Law and Contemporary Problems

The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is putting the final touches on a system designed to account for the science used by federal agencies in their administrative missions. There are reasons for concern that OMB's new programs could be used to skew the system by which regulatory science is generated in the first place.

Phonological Awareness In Spanish: A Tutorial For Speech-Language Pathologists, Brenda K. Gorman, Ronald B. Gillam

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

In the United States, more than 2 million children in Grades pre-K through 6 speak Spanish as their primary language. Approximately 50% of these students receive academic instruction in Spanish. This tutorial provides research-based recommendations for presenting phonological awareness tasks to children who receive literacy instruction in Spanish. The authors also discuss how phonological awareness development may differ between monolingual children learning Spanish and monolingual children learning English, and the implications of these differences for choosing appropriate phonological awareness tasks for Spanish speakers.

Tomographic Reconstruction Of Treponemal Cytoplasmic Filaments Reveals Novel Bridging And Anchoring Components, Jacques Izard, Bruce F. Mcewen, Rita M. Barnard, Thomas Portuese, William A. Samsonoff, Ronald J. Limberger

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

An understanding of the involvement of bacterial cytoplasmic filaments in cell division requires the elucidation of the structural organization of those filamentous structures. Treponemal cytoplasmic filaments are composed of one protein, CfpA, and have been demonstrated to be involved in cell division. In this study, we used electron tomography to show that the filaments are part of a complex with a novel molecular organization that includes at least two distinct features decorating the filaments. One set of components appears to anchor the filaments to the cytoplasmic membrane. The other set of components appears to bridge the cytoplasmic filaments on the …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Although cattle are reservoirs, no validated method exists to monitor Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli 0157 (STEC 0157) on farms. In 29 Midwestern United States feedlot pens we compared culturing feces from the individual cattle to: (1) culturing rope devices that cattle rub or chew; and (2) culturing a composite of fecal pats. Eighty-six per cent (68-96 %) of pens were classified correctly using rope devices to detect pens with at least 16 % of the cattle shedding STEC 0 157 [sensitivity = 82 % (57-96 %); specificity = 92 % (62-100 %)]. Ninety per cent of pens (73-98 %) were …

Folliculovarium mediterraneum n. sp. is described and figured in detail from the intestine of the Mediterranean moray eel Muraena helena (Muraenidae) in the Scandola Nature Reserve, off Corsica in the western Mediterranean. This new species closely resembles F. gymnothoracis Gu & Shen, 1983 and F. xishaense Gu & Shen, 1983 from marine fishes off China, but it may differ from both in not having specialized circum-rynchal spines. It differs from the former by having slightly larger eggs and a longer esophagus, and from F. xishaense by having tegumental spines, a longer esophagus, and a nonrelated host (an eel rather than …

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a common, often fatal, autosomal recessive disease leading to progressive muscle wasting and paralysis as a result of degeneration of anterior horn cells of the spinal cord. The prevalence of SMA cases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is much higher than the European and North American population. Deletions or mutations in 2 genes, telomeric form of the survival motor neuron (SMN1) and the neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP), are known to be associated with SMA. The aim of this study is to examine the deletions or interruptions of the SMN1 and NAIP …

Mesenteric Cystic Lymphangioma, Abdullatif A. Al-Arfaj, Hakam A. Yaseen Oct 2003

Mesenteric Cystic Lymphangioma, Abdullatif A. Al-Arfaj, Hakam A. Yaseen

Saudi Medical Journal

Abdominal cystic lymphangioma is a very rare congenital tumor of lymphatic origin. It usually appears in the pediatric age and frequently presents with non-specific symptoms and deceptive signs causing, at times, diagnostic dilemmas. Ultrasonography and computer tomography imaging are considered the diagnostic modalities of choice. Two cases of mesenteric cystic lymphangioma, one presenting as perforated appendicitis and the other as recurrent gastritis, are reported. Infection in the first and volvulus in the second case is behind the mode of presentation. The diagnostic approach and treatment are described, with emphasis on the operative tactic applied for upper jejunal resection. A high …

Perforated Appendicitis Within Paraumbilical Hernia, Hamad H. Al-Qahtani, Tariq Z. Al-Qahtani

Saudi Medical Journal

The appendix is not uncommonly encountered within an external hernial sac. However, acute appendicitis in hernia is quite rare. We report a female patient who was admitted and operated as a case of incarcerated, strangulated paraumbilical hernia and the hernial sac was found to contain part of the greater omentum, pus and acutely inflamed, gangrenous appendix, perforated at the tip. Appendicectomy and hernial repair were carried out through the same incision.

Proposal For A Model State Watershed Management Act, J.B. Ruhl, C.L. Lant, Steven E. Kraft, Leslie A. Duram, Tim Loftus

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

During the Montana Constitutional Convention of 1889, John Wesley Powell, envisioning a landscape of watershed commonwealths, proposed that Montana adopt watersheds as the boundaries of its counties. The idea did not catch on. Over time, the power of local governments to regulate land use has grown immensely, but the misfit between their political boundaries and environmental policy problem sheds has persisted. As our understanding of ecosystem dynamics improves, however, natural resources management policy is gravitating, once again, to the watershed as an appropriate unit of governance. Many federal and state natural resource management initiatives have come on line in the …
