Estimates Of Genetic Parameters And Selection Strategies To Improve The Economic Efficiency Of Postweaning Growth In Lambs, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck Oct 2003

Estimates Of Genetic Parameters And Selection Strategies To Improve The Economic Efficiency Of Postweaning Growth In Lambs, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to estimate (co)variance components for growth and feed efficiency measures, and to compare selection strategies to improve economic efficiency of gain. Variance components for pre- and postweaning growth, body weight, and measures of feed efficiency were estimated from data collected on 1,047 Targhee lambs over 7 yr. Approximately 21 d after weaning, lambs were group-fed for 4 wk, with ad libitum access to a diet of 37% whole barley grain and 63% pelleted alfalfa hay. Lambs were then individually fed for 6 wk. Lambs were then returned to group feeding for another 4-wk period. …

Effects Of A Supportive-Education Nursing Intervention On Quality Of Life In Patients With Heart Failure, Melodee L. Vanden Bosch Oct 2003

Effects Of A Supportive-Education Nursing Intervention On Quality Of Life In Patients With Heart Failure, Melodee L. Vanden Bosch

Masters Theses

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to examine the difference in quality of life (QOL) in home-care patients with heart failure (HF) receiving nursing intervention. The specific nursing intervention of interest was supportive-education (SE), based on Orem's (1995) self-care deficit theory. The second intervention of general health teaching acted as a placebo effect. The convenience sample of randomly assigned patients with HF was from two home-care agencies. The paired t-test was used to analyze the difference in QOL within the SE group and the placebo group from baseline to six months. The independent t-test was used to compare the …

Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Of Parameters And States, Charles D. Ormsby Oct 2003

Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Of Parameters And States, Charles D. Ormsby

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops a modification to the standard Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE) which allows the use of a new "generalized residual" in the hypothesis conditional probability calculation. The generalized residual is a linear combination of traditional Kalman filter residuals and "post-fit" Kalman filter residuals which are calculated after measurement incorporation. This modified MMAE is termed a Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (GRMMAE). The dissertation provides a derivation of the hypothesis conditional probability formula which the GRMMAE uses to calculate probabilities that each elemental filter in the GRMMAE contains the correct parameter value. Through appropriate choice of a single …

Nonpolar Second-Order Nonlinear And Electrooptic Materials: Axially Ordered Chiral Polymers And Liquid Crystals, Kenneth D. Singer, Rolfe G. Petschek, Victor Ostroverkhov Oct 2003

Nonpolar Second-Order Nonlinear And Electrooptic Materials: Axially Ordered Chiral Polymers And Liquid Crystals, Kenneth D. Singer, Rolfe G. Petschek, Victor Ostroverkhov

Faculty Scholarship

This article reviews our work on the development and optimization of chiral, nonpolar media with large second-order nonlinear optical responses. We show how molecular engineering, theory, and measurements can be used to optimize this promising class of nonlinear optical materials. We describe how supramolecular alignment into easily processable materials takes advantage of the relevant molecular hyperpolarizabilities. A wide variety of techniques can be used to fabricate bulk materials belonging to the chiral nonpolar symmetry groups, D∞ and D2. The microscopic chromophore alignment schemes that optimize the nonlinear optical response in such materials are deduced from general symmetry considerations for both …
