Experimental Evaluation Of Temporal Particle Agglomeration And Metal Partitioning Of Urban Rainfall-Runoff, Aimee Ann Blazier Jan 2003

Experimental Evaluation Of Temporal Particle Agglomeration And Metal Partitioning Of Urban Rainfall-Runoff, Aimee Ann Blazier

LSU Master's Theses

Rainfall-runoff quantity and quality control presents unique challenges due to the complexity and variability of hydrology and rainfall-runoff chemistry as well as the variable nature of constituent-producing processes in the environment. This study investigates two fundamental processes in rainfall-runoff: temporal particle agglomeration and metal partitioning between the solid and aqueous phase. A series of rainfall-runoff events were captured at an urban, Portland concrete cement (PCC) paved site in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and characterized with respect to particle gradation and metal phase fractions (dissolved and particulate) over time from a well-mixed, batch experimental system. Results indicate that equilibria and kinetics of …

Relative Efficacy Of School-Home Notes With And Without Response Cost In Impoverished Elementary School Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Andrea Nichole Jurbergs Jan 2003

Relative Efficacy Of School-Home Notes With And Without Response Cost In Impoverished Elementary School Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Andrea Nichole Jurbergs

LSU Master's Theses

Daily report cards and punishment have proven to be effective methods of classroom behavior management. However, treatment effectiveness studies have not been designed to adequately compare the effects of rewarding and punishing consequences on behavior through a school-home note. The study of school-home note treatment effectiveness has focused on middle-class students with behavior problems; both ADHD and disadvantaged populations have been underresearched. Using a reversal, alternating treatments design, the present study will examine the effectiveness of a response-cost system added to school-home notes for increasing classwork completion and appropriate classroom behavior in several disadvantaged elementary school children with ADHD.

Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping For Agronomic And Fiber Quality Traits In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Using Molecular Markers, Muhanad Walid Akash

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The breeding of Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars that combine high yield and fiber quality is a major challenge to the breeder. The understanding of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) contributing to agronomic and fiber quality traits offers an excellent route to solve this problem. A QTL analysis was carried out after an F2:3 population composed of 138 lines, derived from the intraspecific cross between Paymaster 54 and PeeDee 2165, was developed and a linkage map including 143 AFLP markers was constructed. The F2:3 population was grown in two locations, Alexandria and Baton Rouge in LA. The …

Re-Evaluating The Mausoleum Of Galla Placidia, Lisa Onontiyoh West Jan 2003

Re-Evaluating The Mausoleum Of Galla Placidia, Lisa Onontiyoh West

LSU Master's Theses

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia has generated a lengthy bibliography over the centuries but, in spite of repeated investigations, the north and south arm barrel vaults have received almost no attention. Commentary on these areas of the mosaic program is usually brief and limited to a comparison between the appearance of the barrel vaults and patterns found in various textiles, such as carpets. This thesis seeks to fill the void in the body of scholarly research pertaining to the north and south arm barrel vaults by viewing their decorative motifs through the eyes of a fifth-century Christian. When seen from …

Integrity Review Of Statutory Arbitration Awards, Calvin William Sharpe Jan 2003

Integrity Review Of Statutory Arbitration Awards, Calvin William Sharpe

UC Law Journal

The 1991 Supreme Court decision in Gilmer v. Interstate/Johnson Lane Corp. introduced a new era in the enforcement of statutory rights designed to protect individuals in the workplace. No longer would employees be entitled to a judicial forum or employers limited to such a forum in adjudicating workplace disputes. Rather, Gilmer created the possibility that pre-dispute employment contracts could bind workers to litigate important public rights in the private forum of arbitration under the auspices of the Federal Arbitration Act. This possibility reached fruition in the Court's 2001 decision in Circuit City Stores, Inc. v. Adams, making such pre-dispute arbitration …

Hearing Voices: Speaker Identification In Court, Lawrence M. Solan, Peter M. Tiersma Jan 2003

Hearing Voices: Speaker Identification In Court, Lawrence M. Solan, Peter M. Tiersma

UC Law Journal

Many of the problems that people have identifying speakers solely by their voices are similar to those that people have as eyewitnesses. The amount of exposure, the nature of the identification process, and the number of exposures all matter in determining how likely a witness is to make a correct identification. Yet while the reliability of eyewitness identification has been a focal point in the news, scholarly literature, and the courts, the reliability of earwitness identification has gone virtually unnoticed in the case law and legal literature. The reluctance of the legal system to deal with this problem stems from …

Intellectual Property Collaboration Stresess In Bankruptcy: Protecting The Rights Of The Nonbankrupty Parties, Jeffrey M. Levinson

UC Law Journal

One consequence of the technology explosion in the last decade was the dominance of a wide variety of commercial technology collaborations and alliances. As parties to those alliances are discovering in the current recession, the bankruptcy of one party to those transactions can create serious problems for other parties, especially with respect to the relevant intellectual property rights. Trustees in bankruptcy and bankruptcy lawyers are learning how to exploit vulnerabilities in the structure of collaborations to the growing distress of the intellectual property and technology community. This Note addresses some of the legal and practical issues that arise in these …

The Note argues that the present system is inadequate because of the obstacles to obtaining treatment and, when it is available, the poor quality of mental health care. This Note also explores the societal consequences of the current system and offers some alternatives.

This Note does not argue for confinement without cause or without safeguards. Rather, in an effort to throw some light on a very …

Truth In Government: Beyond The Tax Expenditure Budget, Julie Roin Jan 2003

Truth In Government: Beyond The Tax Expenditure Budget, Julie Roin

UC Law Journal

Recently, the tax expenditure budget has come under renewed attack. Some argue that the conceptual and implementational flaws in the tax expenditure budget justify discontinuing its publication. This Article argues that-if improving the utility of information distributed about the direction and function of government is a desired end-one must focus on the interaction between the various information sources rather than the merits or demerits of any particular source of information. In arguing for the publication of more, rather than less information, this Article points out the generality of the supposedly "fatal" flaws in the tax expenditure budget: all the sources …

Seeking Justice, Preserving Liberty, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr. Jan 2003

Seeking Justice, Preserving Liberty, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr.

UC Law Journal

At the annual Jerome Hall Lecture, presented at the Hastings College of Law on September 19, 2002, Professor Hazard explored the concepts behind the American Bar Association's watchword "ABA Defending Liberty, Pursuing Justice" as it relates to the professional activities in which a large percentage of lawyers are regularly and actively engaged. Professor Hazard contends that although the watchword denotes lofty goals, the concepts of seeking justice and preserving liberty are not inconsistent with fee-forservice representation of ordinary individuals in their business matters. Approximately half of the practicing bar is engaged in the representation of business interests, including for-profit business, …

Matthaeus Pipelare's "Fors Seulement Chanson (Ii)" And Its Related Motet And Mass Performance Editions And Commentary, George H. Black, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Matthaeus Pipelare was a composer from the southern Netherlands who flourished in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Except for the little more than two years he spent as choirmaster for the Confraternity associated with the Cathedral of St. John in 's Hertogenbosch, located in Northern Brabant, almost nothing is known of his professional or personal life. Yet writers of the period hailed his skill and placed him in the same company as such well-known composers as Josquin, la Rue, Brumel, and Isaac. A small but excellent body of the composer's works survive in manuscripts and early prints housed …

Clear Sailing Agreements: A Special Form Of Collusion In Class Action Settlements, William D. Henderson Jan 2003

Clear Sailing Agreements: A Special Form Of Collusion In Class Action Settlements, William D. Henderson

Articles by Maurer Faculty

A clear sailing agreement (or clause) is a compromise in which a class action defendant agrees not to contest the class lawyer's petition for attorneys' fees. This Article argues that clear sailing provisions often facilitate collusive settlements in cases involving non-pecuniary relief or claims-made common funds that return all unclaimed monies to the defendant. Because these types of settlements present difficult valuation problems, trial courts lack a clear benchmark for calculating attorneys' fees. Defendants and class can exploit this uncertainty by presenting an inflated settlement value to the court (to justify higher attorneys' fees) while simultaneously reducing the true cost …

Characteristics Of Fat Free Yogurt As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Charles August Boeneke Jan 2003

Characteristics Of Fat Free Yogurt As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Charles August Boeneke

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Folic acid fortification is used in the prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and ancencephaly, heart defects, facial clefts, urinary tract abnormalities, and limb deficiencies. Although yogurt is not a good source of folic acid, fortification could aid in prevention of above mentioned defects. Fortification of yogurt with folic acid may or may not change its physico-chemical characteristics. Fat free sugar free yogurt was manufactured using 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the recommended daily allowance of 400 micrograms of folic acid. Treatments included addition of folic acid at these levels before and after pasteurization. Lemon …

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala Jan 2003

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala

LSU Master's Theses

A scalable parallel algorithm, Macro-Molecular Dynamics (MMD), has been developed for large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of organic macromolecules, based on space-time multi-resolution techniques and dynamic management of distributed lists. The algorithm also includes the calculation of long range forces using Fast Multipole Method (FMM). FMM is based on the octree data structure, in which each parent cell is divided into 8 child cells and this division continues until the cell size is equal to the non-bonded interaction cutoff length. Due to constant number of operations performed at each stage of the octree, the FMM algorithm scales as O(N). Design and …

Assessing Sovereign Interests In Cross-Border Discovery Disputes: Lessons From Aerospatiale, Hannah Buxbaum Jan 2003

Assessing Sovereign Interests In Cross-Border Discovery Disputes: Lessons From Aerospatiale, Hannah Buxbaum

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The Hague Evidence Convention addresses a particular kind of jurisdictional conflict: the conflict between one nation's issuance of extraterritorial discovery orders and another nation's right to govern discovery activity taking place within its territory. The particular mechanisms that the Convention establishes for use in cross-border discovery proceedings, and the compromises between civil-law and common-law procedures for evidence gathering that it embodies, were effected with that system goal in mind. In Aerospatiale, the Supreme Court considered the scope of the Convention's application, addressing the interaction of Convention procedures and pre-existing federal rules on evidence gathering. As portions of the decision make …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a computer-based reading intervention with eight elementary school children. This program, called the Reading Center, utilizes repeated reading, listening passage preview, word drills, and comprehension questions. A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate the intervention effects on oral reading fluency. Results indicated growth in all eight children, with increases between 8.7 and 20 words per week for intervention passages. The implications of the results for the use of computer-delivered interventions are discussed.

The Transcendental Eigenvalue Problem And Its Application In System Identification, Kumar Vikram Singh Jan 2003

The Transcendental Eigenvalue Problem And Its Application In System Identification, Kumar Vikram Singh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

An accurate mathematical model is needed to solve direct and inverse problems related to engineering analysis and design. Inverse problems of identifying the physical parameters of a non-uniform continuous system based on the spectral data are still unsolved. Traditional methods, for the system identification purpose, describe the continuous structure by a certain discrete model. In dynamic analysis, finite element or finite difference approximation methods are frequently used and they lead to an algebraic eigenvalue problem. The characteristic equation associated with the algebraic eigenvalue problem is a polynomial. Whereas, the spectral characteristic of a continuous system is represented by certain transcendental …

The Integration Of A Formal Garden Curriculum Into Louisiana Public Elementary Schools, Leanna Lynn Smith Jan 2003

The Integration Of A Formal Garden Curriculum Into Louisiana Public Elementary Schools, Leanna Lynn Smith

LSU Master's Theses

School gardens have been and are in use today at schools around the United States to supplement their curriculum. Very little research, however, has been conducted to quantify the benefits that gardening provides to students. The first four chapters of a hands-on gardening curriculum (Junior Master Gardener Handbook Level One) were introduced into three East Baton Rouge Parish elementary schools the fall semester of 2002. Science achievement tests developed at Texas A&M University specifically for the Junior Master Gardener program, were given both before and after the students participated in the gardening activities to determine whether or not the activities …

Mathematical Modeling Analysis Of Floating Bead Biofilter Applications To Domestic Wastewater Treatment, Qiang Wu Jan 2003

Mathematical Modeling Analysis Of Floating Bead Biofilter Applications To Domestic Wastewater Treatment, Qiang Wu

LSU Master's Theses

Floating Bead Biofilters (FBFs) have been applied to aquacultural recirculating tanks and domestic wastewater treatment systems for controlling total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS). Support modified media in these FBFs provide a large surface area (1150~1475 m2/m3) so that the active biofilm can be retained in the FBF by attaching to the media surface. Understanding the theories involved in biofilm processes greatly helps in sizing, designing, and modeling of FBF systems. Fundamental biofilm processes like mass transport of various substrates into the biofilm and the substrate utilization within the biofilm were studied. A …
