Using Psychotherapy Techniques To Reveal Misconceptions And Improve Learning, Paul Michael Santi, Michele M. Santi Jan 2003

Using Psychotherapy Techniques To Reveal Misconceptions And Improve Learning, Paul Michael Santi, Michele M. Santi

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When students are aware that they do not understand a concept, the main impediment to developing an understanding is their willingness to ask questions of the instructor or of fellow students. When students think that they understand a concept, but really have some significant misconception lodged in their mental picture of the concept, they may not supplant this misconception for years, if ever. Both situations can be corrected if the students identify the need to ask questions, are brave enough to do so in the traditional academic settings, and if the answers adequately address the actual misunderstanding (which may be …

Parents, Educators, Law Enforcement, And Participation In Delinquent Behavior: Gender Socialization And Views Of Life Changes, Jolie Marie Imler Jan 2003

Parents, Educators, Law Enforcement, And Participation In Delinquent Behavior: Gender Socialization And Views Of Life Changes, Jolie Marie Imler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The task of the proposed research is to determine the extent parents, educators, law enforcement, and participation in delinquent behavior influence responses of youth toward their hopefulness for the future and likelihood of attending college and whether the relationships differ by gender. Using gender socialization, social capital, and labeling theories as theoretical backgrounds, it is anticipated that contradictory socialization patterns, gendered access to social capital, and labels influence the resources and responses of female juveniles when considering hopefulness for the future and the likelihood of attending college. The proposed study will use secondary data comprised of youth either adjudicated delinquent …

Disregarding Relevant Information When Making A Decision: Is It Possible?, Brandi Jo Juntunen Jan 2003

Disregarding Relevant Information When Making A Decision: Is It Possible?, Brandi Jo Juntunen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The current study was designed to assess the ability of participants to ignore biasing information when making a decision that resulted in a negative outcome for a target individual. Participants reviewed materials about a disciplinary matter regarding a student. Three manipulations of information occurred such that those in the control condition received no biasing information and no instruction to disregard, participants in another condition "accidentally" saw negative biasing information that they were given instructions to disregard, and participants in the final condition saw the same information as those in the second condition but were given no instruction to disregard the …

Research On Self-Represented Litigation: Preliminary Results And Methodological Considerations, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Nicole Mott

Faculty Publications

As various programs for self-represented litigants proliferate and costs increase, funding agencies are beginning to demand that programs demonstrate their effectiveness through empirical evaluation. This article recounts some of the lessons learned from a National Center for State Courts' research project on improving access to justice for self-represented litigants. First, the article briefly describes the problems faced by courts as a result of the influx of self-represented litigants. The article then describes automated case-level data and litigant self-reported data from five jurisdictions and some preliminary findings. We conclude with a discussion of problems that we encountered in analyzing those data.

Helping The Pro Se Litigant: A Changing Landscape, Paula Hannaford-Agor

Faculty Publications

This article describes how the influx of self-represented litigants has forced many within the court and legal communities to reconsider some of the fundamental premises on which the civil justice system is based and to respond in new and creative ways to changing litigant demands on existing court and legal resources. It focuses on changes to the delivery of legal services to low- and moderate-income people, especially the emergence of “unbundled” legal services, and addresses the practical implications related to the distinction between legal information and legal advice. Finally, it describes how judges and court staff are rethinking the conceptual …

Nullification At Work? A Glimpse From The National Center For State Courts Study Of Hung Juries, Paula Hannaford-Agor, Valerie P. Hans

Faculty Publications

In 1998, the National Institute of Justice awarded a grant to the National Center for State Courts ("NCSC") to examine the frequency and various causes of hung juries. One of the factors that the NCSC project staff investigated was jurors' perceptions of the fairness of the law they were asked to apply in felony trials as well as jury and case characteristics that are often associated with jury nullification. The project also asked judges and other court actors to rate the strength of the evidence in the case. Thus, the project enabled researchers to examine jurors' views, the evidence, and …

An Intelligent Early Warning System For Software Quality Improvement And Project Management, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Gautam Kane, Monu Bambroo

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the main reasons behind unfruitful software development projects is that it is often too late to correct the problems by the time they are detected. It clearly indicates the need for early warning about the potential risks. In this paper, we discuss an intelligent software early warning system based on fuzzy logic using an integrated set of software metrics. It helps to assess risks associated with being behind schedule, over budget, and poor quality in software development and maintenance from multiple perspectives. It handles incomplete, inaccurate, and imprecise information, and resolve conflicts in an uncertain environment in its …

Fuel Consumption Modeling Of A Transport Category Aircraft: A Flight Operations Quality Assurance (Foqa) Analysis, Alan J. Stolzer

Publications

"Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA)-derived data was used to develop parsimonious model(s) for fuel consumption on a Boeing 757 airplane using regression analysis. Using the model(s), it should be possible to identify outliers (specific flights) with respect to fuel consumption, which will enable the air carrier to investigate the cause of excessive fuel consumption and remedy the problem A major air carrier provided the database used for the study. Fuel flow was predicted by calibrated airspeed, gross weight, and n2 (ENG[1 or 2]n2). The models containing these three variables explained approximately 85% of the variation in fuel flow. A reporting …

Adaptive-Critic-Based Optimal Neurocontrol For Synchronous Generators In A Power System Using Mlp/Rbf Neural Networks, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel optimal neurocontroller that replaces the conventional controller (CONVC), which consists of the automatic voltage regulator and turbine governor, to control a synchronous generator in a power system using a multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPN) and a radial basis function neural network (RBFN). The heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) based on the adaptive critic design technique is used for the design of the neurocontroller. The performance of the MLPN-based HDP neurocontroller (MHDPC) is compared with the RBFN-based HDP neurocontroller (RHDPC) for small as well as large disturbances to a power system, and they are in turn compared …

Toward A Sustainable Energy Future?: A Comparison Between U.S. And European Energy Sectors, Annett Moehner Jan 2003

Toward A Sustainable Energy Future?: A Comparison Between U.S. And European Energy Sectors, Annett Moehner

LSU Master's Theses

Since 1987, the concept of sustainable development, which tries to combine economic, social and environmental concerns into one benign development model, has become increasingly popular worldwide. To explore and explain the differences in accomplishing sustainable development, this thesis looks at one specific aspect: the energy sectors in the United States and the European Union. After giving an overview on the political and theoretical aspects of sustainable development, the various sustainability dimensions in the energy sector are explored. The following four reasons which warrant the change of the current fossil fuel intense energy sector are discussed: first, air pollution; second, insecurity …

Application Of Mechanistic Models In Predicting Flow Behavior In Deviated Wells Under Ubd Conditions, Faisal Abdullah Aladwani Jan 2003

Application Of Mechanistic Models In Predicting Flow Behavior In Deviated Wells Under Ubd Conditions, Faisal Abdullah Aladwani

LSU Master's Theses

Underbalanced drilling (UBD) has increased in recent years because of the many advantages associated with it. These include increase in the rate of penetration and reduction of lost circulation and formation damage. Drilling of deviated and horizontal wells also increased since recovery can be improved from a horizontal or a deviated well. The drilling of deviated wells using UBD method will reduce several drilling related problems such as hole cleaning and formation damage. Prediction of flow and pressure profiles while drilling underbalanced in such wells will help in designing and planning of the well. The main aim of this research …

Toward Validation Of The Sports Behavior Checklist: A Comparison Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Control Group Children In A Sports Environment, Aaron Clendenin

LSU Master's Theses

Data from participants (N = 124) was entered into a principal components analysis to test the factor structure of the Sports Behavior Checklist ([SBC] Johnson & Rosen, 2000). The subscales of the SBC were correlated with relevant subscales of the Conners'- Revised Parent Form ( Conners, 1997) and Social Skills Rating System (Gresham & Elliott, 1990). Both of these analyses were conducted to determine the construct validity of the instrument. Additionally, a subsample (N = 92) of low socioeconomic status individuals was used to compare groups of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (n = 49) and non-clinical (n = 43) children on the …

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Individual Decision Rules And Emergent Social Norms, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan Butner

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A new theory integrating evolutionary and dynamical approaches is proposed. Following evolutionary models, psychological mechanisms are conceived as conditional decision rules designed to address fundamental problems confronted by human ancestors, with qualitatively different decision rules serving different problem domains and individual differences in decision rules as a function of adaptive and random variation. Following dynamical models, decision mechanisms within individuals are assumed to unfold in dynamic interplay with decision mechanisms of others in social networks. Decision mechanisms in different domains have different dynamic outcomes and lead to different sociospatial geometries. Three series of simulations examining trade-offs in cooperation and mating …

Family Research Council And Roe V. Wade, Gerard V. Bradley Jan 2003

Family Research Council And Roe V. Wade, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

Thirty years ago in Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court launched what it hoped would be a cultural revolution. Here are the inaugural words: "The right of privacy...is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate a pregnancy".

The revolution has progressed rapidly. The counter-strategies tried so far have been ineffective: we are no closer to overruling Roe than in 1973; the abortion liberty occupies an organizing place in our culture and politics; the number of abortions annually has remained remarkably steady over three decades.

La Doctrine Americaine Et L'Intervention En Iraq, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2003

La Doctrine Americaine Et L'Intervention En Iraq, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

In the days following the September 11 attacks on the United States, members of the Bush administration called for war against Iraq. When this call led to the development of an invasion plan, American legal scholars debated the legal arguments in favor of the war. By the time Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 19, 2003, legal opinions fell into four categories:

- the invasion of Iraq is legal because there is no "viable" rule prohibiting the use of force;

- the invasion is legal because it was authorized by the Security Council and/or because it constitutes an exercise of …

Who Helps The Hegemon?, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2003

Who Helps The Hegemon?, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

Is the nature of the international legal system changing? Do we see developments in international relations that challenge the core concepts of international law, rendering the law dys-or non-functional. Professor Karl Zemanek sees indicators of just such change. He writes to arouse our attention to the dangers, urging us to act before it is too late. Professor Zemanek sees the United States tending toward hegemony or even imperialism and argues that these tendencies are already changing international law. I share his concerns for the ultimate health of international law, but urge a broader look at the dangers. Focus should be …
