A Monographic Revision Of The Genus Platycoelia Dejean (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anoplognathini), Andrew B. T. Smith

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

This paper presents a taxonomic revision of the genus Platycoelia Dejean (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anoplognathini: Platycoeliina). Phylogenetic analyses of all species in the genus were conducted and the biogeography of the genus is discussed. The phylogenetic analysis supports the monophyly of Platycoelia and divides the genus into four major clades. Based on the cladistic analysis, the generic names Callichloris Burmeister, Leucopelaea Bates, and Epicallichloris Gutiérrez are considered synonyms of Platycoelia. Character states supporting monophyletic clades are discussed. Descriptions and keys to all taxa are included.

The genus Platycoelia was revised and now includes 62 species, 19 of which are described …

Remote Sensing At The Broussard Mounds Site: A Prehistoric Multi-Mound Site Located In The Lower Mississippi River Valley, Benjamin Shenandoah Goodwin

LSU Master's Theses

In order to test the effectiveness of various types of remote sensing for applications in archaeology, remote sensing data in the form of color infrared aerial photography, Airborne Terrestrial Applications Sensor (ATLAS) imagery, 35mm (black and white) and (color) infrared photography, and ground penetrating radar (GPR) were used at the Broussard Mounds site. Additionally, light detection and ranging (LIDAR) digital elevation imagery was downloaded, processed, and interpreted. Anomalies identified through the use of remote sensing were relocated geospatially and archaeological testing procedures were used to verify the presence of subsurface archaeological remains and to document the prehistoric cultural components at …

Heat Transfer In Outdoor Aquaculture Ponds, Jonathan Lamoureux Jan 2003

Heat Transfer In Outdoor Aquaculture Ponds, Jonathan Lamoureux

LSU Master's Theses

An energy balance was developed for heated and unheated earthen aquaculture ponds to 1) determine the relative importance of energy transfer mechanism affecting pond temperature; 2) predict pond temperatures; 3) estimate the energy required to control pond temperatures, and 4) recommend efficient heating and cooling methods. PHATR (Pond Heating and Temperature Regulation), a computer program using 4th order Runge-Kutta numerical method was developed to solve the energy balance using weather, flow rate and pond temperature data. By comparing measured and modeled pond temperatures, the average difference (the average bias) was 0.5°C for unheated ponds and 2.4°C for heated ponds. The …

The Effects Of Sediment Grain Size And Oil Exploration On Microbial Atp Biomass, Eric Tyson Guilbeau Jan 2003

The Effects Of Sediment Grain Size And Oil Exploration On Microbial Atp Biomass, Eric Tyson Guilbeau

LSU Master's Theses

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a unique biochemical indicator of active microbial biomass and its relationship to environmental conditions. Its assay in sediments is complicated, however, by adsorptive loss to the sediment matrix and subsequent interferences in the luciferin-luciferase assay by compounds released during the extraction process. Corrections must be applied to correct for these losses and we describe a novel approach using radioactive ATP to correct for ATP adsorption. The sediment matrix also plays a significant role in determining both the magnitude of the ATP pool and the extent of the ATP adsorptive loss. Coarser sediments were found to have …

Measuring Fear Of Crime On Campus: A Study Of An Urban University, Cheryl Papa Bedenbaugh Jan 2003

Measuring Fear Of Crime On Campus: A Study Of An Urban University, Cheryl Papa Bedenbaugh

LSU Master's Theses

Since 1990, five federal laws and many state laws have been created to increase security on university campuses (Security on Campus 2000). These laws, which include provisions that require university police and administrations to accurately and openly report the school's crime statistics (Hudge 2000), have fueled an increased focus about crime committed on university campuses. The philosophy behind the open reporting laws is twofold: parents and students have the information necessary to help them make the best decisions on which college to attend, and students are armed with information so they can take necessary precautions to enhance their level of …

Diet Similarity Of Pen-Raised Versus Native, Louisiana White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Louisiana, Kristopher Scott Davis Jan 2003

Diet Similarity Of Pen-Raised Versus Native, Louisiana White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Louisiana, Kristopher Scott Davis

LSU Master's Theses

Previous studies have shown that pen-raised deer may be already predisposed to malnutrition at a higher rate then their native counterparts because they are normally raised on a pelleted ration and may not forage efficiently once released into wild habitats. Therefore, twenty pen-raised white-tailed deer that were offspring of deer obtained from Missouri (Odocoileus virginianus) were released onto a marsh pump-off habitat in southeast Louisiana (Da Bunch) to compare their diets to the diets of the native, wild, white-tail deer population already established in the area over four consecutive seasons to test this hypothesis. The microhistological analysis technique was used …

Analysis Of Laboratory And Field Pull-Out Tests Of Geosynthetics In Clayey Soils, Ather Mohiuddin Jan 2003

Analysis Of Laboratory And Field Pull-Out Tests Of Geosynthetics In Clayey Soils, Ather Mohiuddin

LSU Master's Theses

Soil reinforcement interaction is a key issue in the design of reinforced soil structures. Therefore, it is important to analyze the pull-out mechanism, and to evaluate the interaction between the soil and geosynthetic reinforcement. Majority of pull-out tests performed to date were in granular soils, and very few tests were reported in cohesive soils. The shortage of in-situ granular materials and the availability of cohesive soils in Louisiana have initiated a growing interest in using the marginal soils as backfill material. To investigate the soil-geosynthetic interaction parameters, series of laboratory and field pull-out tests were conducted using various geosynthetics (geogrids: …

Axis-Switching In Square Coaxial Jets, Victor Piffaut Jan 2003

Axis-Switching In Square Coaxial Jets, Victor Piffaut

LSU Master's Theses

Airflow from single and coaxial contoured nozzles with a square cross section is studied using constant temperature anemometry. The inner to outer jet velocity ratio is 1.5. The Reynolds number of the outer jet based on the hydraulic diameter of the outer nozzle exit is 15,300. Results are compared to previous data obtained with circular nozzles under the same conditions. Properties of the jets and their shear layers such as turbulence shear layer thicknesses and growth rates were derived from the velocity record. The mixing between the jets and with the external flow was found to be enhanced by passive …

From Orthodoxy To Atheism: The Intellectual Development Of Bruno Bauer, Stan Michael Landry Jan 2003

From Orthodoxy To Atheism: The Intellectual Development Of Bruno Bauer, Stan Michael Landry

LSU Master's Theses

In this paper I argue that the Young Hegelian Protestant theologian Bruno Bauer was ‘radicalized’ by the events of 1840s Prussia, and that the personal experiences he endured during this period explain his transition from the orthodox Hegelian Christianity that he espoused during his student days at the University of Berlin, to the vitriolic atheism and criticism of the Prussian state which he spouted from 1842 until the dissolution of his radical band of Young Hegelian friends known as Die Freien. The events that had such profound effects on Bruno Bauer’s thought include his frustration with the reactionary policies of …

This study investigated the effectiveness of a method of parent training and parent reading tutoring that built on past research. Parents of five first grade children, who were reading below grade level, participated. Parents were trained to implement a three-week tutoring procedure that included modeling, practice, phonics, fluency, accuracy, comprehension, and reinforcement components. According to permanent product examination, parent intervention implementation never fell below 82% integrity. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to analyze results. According to visual analysis, four of the five children showed significant gains in words correct per minute on tutored reading passages. There was …

Effects Of Free Methionine And Lysine On In Vitro Fermentation And In Vivo Performance And Ruminal Fermentation Of Late Lactation Holstein Cows, Yi-Hua Chung Jan 2003

Effects Of Free Methionine And Lysine On In Vitro Fermentation And In Vivo Performance And Ruminal Fermentation Of Late Lactation Holstein Cows, Yi-Hua Chung

LSU Master's Theses

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of free Met and Lys supplementation on ruminal fermentation in vitro and in vivo. In the in vitro study, supplementation of Met and Lys had effects on concentrations of total VFA and NH4+, proportions of acetate, propionate, butyrate, isovalerate, valerate, and the ratio of acetate to propionate. Percentages of microbial N synthesis in effluent pellets were not affected by supplementing Lys and Met. The combination of 0.52% Met and 1.03% (90% DM) Lys resulted in the highest concentration of total VFA, second highest concentration of NH4+, …

Multileaf Collimator Positional Reproducibility Evaluated With A Two-Dimensional Diode Array, Kara King Ferachi Jan 2003

Multileaf Collimator Positional Reproducibility Evaluated With A Two-Dimensional Diode Array, Kara King Ferachi

LSU Master's Theses

When delivering the total dose via a sequence of small fields shaped by a multileaf collimator, it is important to consider leaf positional reproducibility. A small error in the leaf position can result in large dose errors to the entire field. This is true for both dynamic multileaf collimation and step and shoot delivery. The goal of this research project is to design a method of quality assurance that is easily reproducible, sensitive to small changes in leaf position, and requires minimal time on the part of the medical physicist to carry out. This paper describes a system of measurements …

Laboratory Evaluation Of In-Situ Tests As Potential Quality Control/Quality Assurance Tools, Ekrem Seyman Jan 2003

Laboratory Evaluation Of In-Situ Tests As Potential Quality Control/Quality Assurance Tools, Ekrem Seyman

LSU Master's Theses

There are new in-situ test devices such as the Geogauge, Light Falling Weight Deflectometer (LFWD) and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP). Unlike the nuclear density gauge, the new methods provide measurements based on the engineering properties (strength/stiffness) of soil instead of physical properties like field density and moisture content. However the geogauge, LFWD and the DCP are not yet proven to be reliable and the correlations of these tests with standard tests are limited. An extensive laboratory investigation was carried out to evaluate the Geogauge, LFWD and DCP as potential tests to measure in-situ stiffness of highway materials and embankments. In …

Economic Analysis Of The Best Management Practices (Bmps) In Louisiana Sugarcane Production, Ying Zhong Jan 2003

Economic Analysis Of The Best Management Practices (Bmps) In Louisiana Sugarcane Production, Ying Zhong

LSU Master's Theses

Agriculture has been identified as one of the major sources of nonpoint water pollution due to discharges running off farmland. This study assessed the current adoption of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Louisiana sugarcane industry and provided policy recommendations based on the empirical results. Fifteen BMPs recommended by Louisiana State University Agricultural Center were examined in three categories: Soil Erosion and Sediment Control, Nutrient Management, and Pesticide Management. Based on neoclassical economic principles of individual’s utility maximization, this study evaluated seven multivariate probit models using primary data collected from a mail survey of Louisiana’s sugarcane producers. The results indicated …

An Investigation Of A Salt-Dome Environment At South Timbalier 54, Gulf Of Mexico, Robert E. Little, Jr Jan 2003

An Investigation Of A Salt-Dome Environment At South Timbalier 54, Gulf Of Mexico, Robert E. Little, Jr

LSU Master's Theses

Salt domes have been studied in the Gulf Coast region to look at how, why, and where saline waters are located within these field areas. Fluid flow model and pathway studies can be helpful to the research of saline water migration because it can be correlated to hydrocarbon migration in petroleum exploration. The South Timbalier 54 field occurs over a salt dome that sits at approximately 3,048 meters beneath the seafloor. Two major faults were found originating from the salt dome up into the shallow section of the field. The sands were deposited in fluvial, deltaic, or marine environments. The …

Blind Fault Detection Using Spectral Signatures, Pallavi Chethan Jan 2003

Blind Fault Detection Using Spectral Signatures, Pallavi Chethan

LSU Master's Theses

This work studies a blind fault detection method, which only analyses a system's output signal for any change in the characteristics from pre-fault to post-fault to identify the occurrence of faults. In our case the fault considered to develop the procedure is change in time constant of an aircraft's aileron-actuator system and its simplified version - a position servo system. The method is studied as an alternative to conventional fault detection and identification methods. The output signal is passed through a filter bank to enhance the effect of a fault. The Short time Fourier transform is performed on the enhanced …

Effectiveness Of Systematic Care Management (Scm) On Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Nicu) Length Of Stay, Michael Ray Burcham

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The increasing frequency and complexity of neonatal care are key contributors to rising medical costs. Over the past twenty years, neonatal delivery rates have been increasing and infant mortality rates are improving. Neonatal care has become very expensive with few applicable clinical guidelines for care. ParadigmHealth has developed an integrated, care management structure termed Systematic Care Management© (SCM). The premise is that by promoting the most expert and efficient neonatal care, significant reductions in morbidity will occur, reducing the need for and reduced cost of NICU and subsequent care. The aim of the study was to determine whether the SCM …

Addressing Off-Site Nutrient Pollution Through Conventional Management Actions: A Modelling Case Study, David Weaver, Simon Neville, David Deeley Jan 2003

Addressing Off-Site Nutrient Pollution Through Conventional Management Actions: A Modelling Case Study, David Weaver, Simon Neville, David Deeley

Conference papers and presentations

The ecology of estuaries on the south coast of Western Australia has been disrupted by increased nutrient and sediment discharge from predominantly rural catchments. Seagrass beds have been replaced by macroalgae, and toxic algal blooms threaten human and animal health, and reduce amenity. A range of conventional management actions are available to reduce nutrient loss at source, and it is important to evaluate possible reductions, and costs, so that limited funds can be targeted to realise the greatest moderation of nutrient loss. A lumped landuse nutrient generation rate model was developed for four catchments (Wilson Inlet, Oyster Harbour, Torbay Inlet …

The Significance Of Entrenchment Of Equality Rights, Dianne Pothier Jan 2003

The Significance Of Entrenchment Of Equality Rights, Dianne Pothier

Dianne Pothier Collection

Not until April 17, 1985 did Canada's Constitution officially embrace guarantees of equality. The three year delay in the coming into force of section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was a clear acknowledgement that equality was not a pre-existing condition at the time of entrenchment of the Charter in 1982. After 17 years of experience with entrenched rights, it can unequivocally be said that entrenchment has brought progress toward equality. Yet it must also be said that significant barriers to the attainment of full legal equality remain. This article will explain the basis upon which I …

Predatory Pricing In The Canadian Context, Kara Beitel Jan 2003

Predatory Pricing In The Canadian Context, Kara Beitel

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Predatory pricing is one of the most debated aspects of antitrust legislation and theory. Economic scholars dispute its existence, and the methods for its detection are the subject of ongoing debate. Consequently, the regulation of this type of anticompetitive behaviour has developed significantly over the past thirty years. The cases and Guidelines reveal a careful approach taken to behaviour as predation. The need to ensure that legitimate forms of competition are not penalized is integral to the success of the Competition Act and to the attainment of its enumerated purposes.

Marriage On Tv, Mary E. Hess Jan 2003

Marriage On Tv, Mary E. Hess

Faculty Publications

While it is important for teachers of religion to consider how television portrays marriage, it may be even more important to consider how we use television and how we help people engage the media with critical perception. People of faith need to do a cultural intervention, providing a deep and sustaining vision of what marriage can be over time and in connection with community.
