Automated Casting Cleaning, Chris Anderson Dec 2003

Automated Casting Cleaning, Chris Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

The dilemma facing all foundries today is finding a cost effective, efficient, and safe manner in which to clean castings. At the same time produce a cleaned casting that meets consistent quality and delivery expectations. Today nearly 90% of all casting produced are cleaned by the use of manual labor via chipping an grinding. This manual method has proved to be very labor intensive, costly, lacking consistent quality, and carry high rates of injuries. The use of automation to clean castings is in its embryo stage in the foundry industry. The use of automation in the foundry industry, products currently …

Long-Term Employment Agreements With In-House Counsel: Employment Security Or Ethical Quagmire?, Richard E. Moberly, John Hutchins Dec 2003

Long-Term Employment Agreements With In-House Counsel: Employment Security Or Ethical Quagmire?, Richard E. Moberly, John Hutchins

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The relationship between a company and its in-house corporate counsel involves a fragile mixture of the corporate counsel’s fiduciary obligations as the company’s attorney and the company’s legal and contractual responsibilities as the attorney’s employer. Although these roles and expectations often blend smoothly, the relationship can become problematic when the corporate counsel’s position as an attorney conflicts with the counsel’s status as an employee. Put another way, when a company’s expectations as a client are at odds with its responsibilities as an employer, the relationship between the employer-client and the employee-attorney can become strained and expose each to difficulty, if …

Medicare+Choice In Palm Beach: Watching And Waiting?, Lauren Hersch Nicholas, Geraldine Dallek, Brian Biles

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Under the Medicare+Choice program, firms have been able to offer products on a county by county basis, making participation decisions based on factors such as county payment rate, strength of local provider networks, and beneficiary's affinity for managed care. In 2003, Medicare+Choice payment rates paid to plans range from $495 in rural floor counties to a high of $872 in Staten Island, NY. Consequently, there is large national variation in benefits, premiums, and plan participation. A recent site visit to Palm Beach county and neighboring Miami-Dade highlighted many of the differences between counties which may pose challenges to firms trying …

What The Supreme Court Could Learn About The Child Online Protection Act By Reading Playboy, Shaun Richardson

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Due to the ease of Internet searching, Congress has passed the Child Online Protection Act to protect children from sexually explicit material. Although the Supreme Court has not directly decided the issue, it has hinted that the Act may survive a First Amendment challenge. In this Note, the author argues reasons why the Act should not survive a First Amendment challenge, and that measures such as parental empowerment via government-facilitated use of Internet filtering software are preferable

Privacy Rights Versus Foia Disclosure Policy: The "Uses And Effects" Double Standard In Access To Personally-Identifiable Information In Government Records, Michael Hoefges, Martin E. Halstuk, Bill F. Chamberlin Dec 2003

Privacy Rights Versus Foia Disclosure Policy: The "Uses And Effects" Double Standard In Access To Personally-Identifiable Information In Government Records, Michael Hoefges, Martin E. Halstuk, Bill F. Chamberlin

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The U.S. government maintains a vast amount of personally-identifiable information on millions of American citizens. Much of this information is contained in electronic databases maintained by federal agencies. Various Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requesters, such as journalists, marketers, and union organizers seek this information for different purposes including investigative reporting and targeted solicitations. These kinds of uses are known as "derivative uses" because this government-compiled information is requested for purposes other than the official purposes for which the information was originally gathered. These and other derivative uses of personally-identifiable information often implicate privacy concerns. Conversely, restrictions on public access …

Investigation Of Electrical Properties And Structure Of Vacuum Evaporated C60 Films, Angiras D. Pandya Dec 2003

Investigation Of Electrical Properties And Structure Of Vacuum Evaporated C60 Films, Angiras D. Pandya

Masters Theses

C60 is an important electronic material and its properties can be tuned by thermal annealing process and solid phase crystallization process. These properties were investigated as a function of thermal annealing temperature and solid phase crystallization. However there is no systematical study on annealing effect and Solid Phase Crystallization of C60 films. In this study, the effect of thermal annealing on formation of nanocrystalline C60 thin films were investigated for annealed samples and solid phase crystallized samples. The C60 films described here were prepared by vacuum thermal evaporation method. The structural properties of C60 films …

Patience : A Play In Two Acts., Mary Rotella 1958-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When Howard Manning wakes from a fainting spell to find himself hospitalized with a serious but correctable weakness in his heart, his refusal of treatment intimates a death wish that provokes consternation among the skilled medical professionals who are poised to save his life. The first act explores the character and implications of his resistance in relation to the expectations of his surgeon Dr. Vincent Abel, nurse Zo Clement, psychiatry resident Trudy Zeffirelli, and neighboring patient Clarence Weatherby. It culminates with Manning's precipitous and injurious departure against medical advice. The second act reveals Manning returned to his hospital bed, withdrawn …

Functional Proteomic Analysis Of The Myocardial Pkcepsilon Subproteome Pkcepsilon-Akt-Enos Signaling Modules And During., Jun Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Western societies. Thus, understanding the molecular mechanisms to reduce myocardial ischemia and limit infarction size are of great importance. Ample evidence has shown that protein kinase C epsilon (PKCepsilon) play an essential role in the genesis of cardioprotection. In particular, our laboratory has shown that activation of PKCepsilon in the heart is sufficient to significantly reduce myocardial infarction due to coronary artery occlusion. However, the molecular mechanism responsible for PKCepsilon-induced cardioprotection remain unclear. Recently, functional proteomic analysis have demonstrated that PKCepsilon forms signaling complexes with various of proteins, …

An Exploration Of The Influence Of Demographic Factors On Individual And Aggregate Student Achievement Measurements In The Kentucky Accountability System., Beverly Lee Derrington Moore 1938- Dec 2003

An Exploration Of The Influence Of Demographic Factors On Individual And Aggregate Student Achievement Measurements In The Kentucky Accountability System., Beverly Lee Derrington Moore 1938-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the progress of standards-based accountability in eliminating the effects of student background and school composition factors on student achievement and school performance in a large, urban district in Kentucky. The factors included gender, socioeconomic status (SES), ethnicity, mobility, family structure, giftedness, and disability. The school composition variables were the percentages of those factors in the school populations. Each grade and level--elementary, middle, and high school--was analyzed by multiple regression. At the student level, SES, giftedness, and disability predicted 15 to 36% of the variance in scores. SES, family structure, and mobility rate accounted for 56 to 91% …

State Political Culture And The Affordability Of Higher Education : A Multivariate Analysis Of The Impact Of State Higher Education Systems On The Cost Of Attending College., Angela Perkins Girdley 1964-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand variance in state system performance in affordability using variables describing the state political environment and the higher education governance structure. Understanding how the political culture of states affects higher education illuminates agendas, priorities, and motivations of key decision-makers in higher education. The dependent variable was affordability of higher education measured by the National Council on Public Policy in Higher Education "Measuring Up" (2000) grade. Independent variables were the impact of special interest groups, the state higher education governance structure, legislative professionalization, and the institutional strength of the governor. Pearson product-moment correlations and …
