Creating Effective Teams In A Classroom Environment, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Cyndi A. Crother Oct 2003

Creating Effective Teams In A Classroom Environment, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Cyndi A. Crother

Accounting

For over a decade, companies have been concerned that new graduates are often not prepared to work in jobs where there they are required to contribute as a member of a team. In response, many educators have adopted team-based learning pedagogies, often referred to as cooperative learning. The use of teams has created additional class management issues and added to the complexity of class dynamics. While most students find team activities helpful, the authors have experienced a variety of problems encountered by various teams. Split Knowledge Level Modeling, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl Oct 2003

Split Knowledge Level Modeling, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Traditional approaches to building intelligent information systems employ an object model to define a representational structure for the information of interest within the target domain of the system. At runtime, the model provides a constrained template for the creation of the individual object instances and relationships that together define the state of the system at a given point in time. The ontology also provides a vocabulary for expressing domain knowledge typically in the form of rules (declarative knowledge) or methods (procedural knowledge). Agents operating within the system utilize the encoded knowledge to progress the state of the system towards the …

Bohmian Dialogue: A Promising Pedagogy For Transformative Learning?, Leslie G. Mcbride, Robin A. Voetterl, Mary K. Kinnick

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Between 1997 and 2002, dialogue, a process developed by the late theoretical physicist David Bohm and philosopher Krishnamurti, was adapted and used as the central form of pedagogy within two interdisciplinary courses at Portland State University. The purpose of this workshop is, through an interactive experience, to provide participants with an introductory understanding of Bohmian dialogue and its promise as a pedagogy for transformative teaching and learning in higher education. Throughout the past several years, Bohmian dialogue has developed into a process in which meaning and knowledge are created and shared between and among educators and learners during the learning …

Good Helping Relationships In Child Welfare: Co-Authored Stories Of Success (Summary Report), Catherine De Boer, Nick Coady Oct 2003

Good Helping Relationships In Child Welfare: Co-Authored Stories Of Success (Summary Report), Catherine De Boer, Nick Coady

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This project involved multiple, in-depth interviews with six worker-client dyads from child welfare. The dyads were selected on the basis of workers and clients agreeing that they had worked through some degree of negative interpersonal process toward the achievement of a good working relationship. For each dyad, two individual interviews with the worker and the client were followed by a joint interview. These interviews produced stories that described from workers' and clients' perspectives how the relationship developed over time, how difficulties were dealt with, and what impact the relationship had on the participants. Although these stories were written by the …

Mobilizing Students And Community Partners To Enhance The Health Of The Rural Elderly, M. Susan Jones, Marilyn M. Gardner, Janelle A. Peeler, Marilyn Lewis

Nursing Faculty Publications

The Health Enhancement of the Rural Elderly (HERE) project is a federally funded grant project designed to empower the rural elderly in Butler and Edmonson counties to maximize their use of the health care system. Of this population in rural Kentucky, 14-15% is 65 years or older (U.S. Bureau of Census, 2000). A higher incidence of chronic diseases, disabilities, difficulties with daily living activities, and cutbacks in social services have been identified as factors causing this population to …
