Linking Of Errata: Current Practices In Online Physical Sciences Journals, Emily L. Poworoznek Oct 2003

Linking Of Errata: Current Practices In Online Physical Sciences Journals, Emily L. Poworoznek

University Library Scholarship

Reader awareness of article corrections can be of critical importance in the physical and biomedical sciences. Comparison of errata and corrigenda in online versions of high-impact physical sciences journals across titles and publishers yielded surprising variability. Of 44 online journals surveyed, 14 had no links between original articles and later corrections. When present, hyperlinks between articles and errata showed patterns in presentation style, but lacked consistency. Variability in the presentation, linking, and availability of online errata indicates that practices are not evenly developed across the field. Comparison of finding tools showed excellent coverage of errata by Science Citation Index, lack …

Plasma Density Gratings Induced By Intersecting Laser Pulses In Underdense Plasmas, Z.-M. Sheng, Jiandi Zhang, Donald Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

Electron and ion density gratings induced by two intersecting ultrashort laser pulses at intensities of 1016 W/cm2 or lower are investigated. The ponderomotive force generated by the inhomogeneous intensity distribution in the intersecting region of the interfering pulses produces deep electron and ion density modulations at a wavelength less than a laser wavelength in vacuum. Dependence of the density modulation on the plasma densities, temperatures, and the ion mass, as well as the laser pulse parameters are studied analytically and by particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that the density peaks of such gratings can be a few times …

What Are You Thinking.... Allowing Publics To Engage The Surfaces Of The City, Matthew 'Mick' Mcnutt

Architecture Thesis Prep

"How can architecture build urban environments that allow for public participation in and control over the space of the city? Encouraging and encompassing the play element in culture, architecture can represent a society constructed with systems of exchange based upon information, communication, and imagination among varying publics in order to counterbalance the existing system of capital enterprise."

Supporting the Literacy Development of Low-Income Children in Afterschool Programs: Challenges and Exemplary Practices
By Robert Halpern
Erikson Institute for Graduate Study in Child Development

While much of the current concern over the literacy development of low- and moderateincome children focuses on schools (and, to a lesser degree, on parents), many observers are arguing for a role for other institutions. In particular, funders are turning to afterschool programs to address this critical developmental task. This paper explores the roles afterschool programs can and do play in the literacy development of low-income children, drawing on surveys and observations of afterschool programs …
