Optimal Age At Fostering For The Derivation Of Helicobacter Hepaticus-Free Mice, Kem Boullion Singletary Jan 2003

Optimal Age At Fostering For The Derivation Of Helicobacter Hepaticus-Free Mice, Kem Boullion Singletary

LSU Master's Theses

Helicobacter hepaticus is well established as an unwanted variable in laboratory rodent colonies. Historically, caesarean section and embryo transfer have been used to derive Helicobacter-free mouse colonies. Neonatal transfer of newborn mice onto Helicobacter-free foster dams was recently reported as an alternative method of deriving Helicobacter-free mice, but until now, the age by which pups must be fostered to remain Helicobacter-free was unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the age by which mouse pups must be fostered to remain H. hepaticus-free. Beginning on the day of birth, 20 C57BL/6 mice were fostered from H. hepaticus-positive parents onto …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the historical coping and survival strategies of African American women - as reflected through the works of Nannie Helen Burroughs- that can be integrated into current social work practice. This research is important because is describes, explores and analyzes culturally relevant helping traditions, among African American women that have historically promoted their emotional and psychological well-being. An analysis of methods used by Burroughs was derived from articles, letters, speeches and minutes from various convention meetings. Also, a variety of secondary sources were also used during the research process. Results from the study are important in that they …

Phosphorus Transport And Variability In Two Louisiana Coastal Plain Soils, Gregory Joseph Waldron Jan 2003

Phosphorus Transport And Variability In Two Louisiana Coastal Plain Soils, Gregory Joseph Waldron

LSU Master's Theses

Soil phosphorus (P) build-up from long-term application of poultry litter may increase P loss in surface and subsurface water and lead to eutrophication. Anoxic conditions during water saturation may aggravate the problem by increasing P solubility and mobility. However, the same level of soil P at different locations may not yield equal runoff P if the capacity of the soil to retain P varies across the landscape. This study examined: 1) effects of soil water oxygenation and concentration of soil organic matter (SOM) on development of anoxic conditions leading to decreased P sorption and increased mobility in a Ruston (fine-loamy, …

There were two sequences of data collection: the first consisted of two surveys sent to online teachers and another to students enrolled in online courses in three academic colleges. The second sequence of interviews with nine experienced online teachers provided a …

Shenpi (Licensing) Reform From The Perspective Of One Municipal Jurisdiction: Ideologies, Institutions, And Law, Wei Cui Jan 2003

Shenpi (Licensing) Reform From The Perspective Of One Municipal Jurisdiction: Ideologies, Institutions, And Law, Wei Cui

All Faculty Publications

The Administrative Licensing Law (xingzheng xuke fa) will constitute a major addition to Chinese administrative law, and the rhetoric surrounding its drafting promises path-breaking reform of the Chinese regulatory state. This report critically assesses that promise by chronicling the actual course of shenpi (licensing) reform carried out in Shenzhen in 2001. Shenpi reform derives its novelty from questioning the rationale of regulatory policies and not just the procedures by which they are carried out. In Shenzhen, however, the reform revolved around an effort to achieve quantitative reduction in the number of shenpi procedures, which could reflect either changes in the …

Estimation Of Waterfowl Food Abundance In Coastal Freshwater Marshes Of Louisiana And Texas, Christian Jesse Winslow Jan 2003

Estimation Of Waterfowl Food Abundance In Coastal Freshwater Marshes Of Louisiana And Texas, Christian Jesse Winslow

LSU Master's Theses

Food abundance might limit survival or recruitment of wintering waterfowl. Nutritional requirements of wintering waterfowl have been estimated, but there are insufficient data on the abundance of seeds and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) to determine if enough habitat exists to support target populations of waterfowl throughout winter. I estimated waterfowl food abundance at 14 coastal freshwater marsh sites in Texas and Louisiana from August 2001 to March 2003, and tested the hypothesis that wintering waterfowl reduce food abundance. I analyzed 210 and 360 seed and SAV samples, respectively, taken during September 2001, February 2002, September 2002, and February 2003 to …

Jazz And The Cultural Transformation Of America In The 1920s, Courtney Patterson Carney Jan 2003

Jazz And The Cultural Transformation Of America In The 1920s, Courtney Patterson Carney

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the early twentieth century jazz was a regionally based, racially defined dance music that featured solo and collective improvisation. Originating in New Orleans, jazz soon spread throughout the country as musicians left the South for better opportunities-both economic and social-elsewhere in the country. Jazz greatly increased in popularity during the 1920s. No longer a regional music dominated by African Americans, jazz in the 1920s helped define a generation torn between the Victorian society of nineteenth century America and the culture of modernity that was quickly defining the early twentieth century. Jazz and its eventual popularity represented the cultural tensions …

Arterial And Venous Adaptations To Short-Term Handgrip Exercise Training, Mahmoud Awad Alomari Jan 2003

Arterial And Venous Adaptations To Short-Term Handgrip Exercise Training, Mahmoud Awad Alomari

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Four studies on vascular and exercise physiology are presented in this document. The 1st study examined the relationships between measures of fitness and FVF in 55 young [22.6 ± 3.5 years] adults. Estimated VO2peak correlated with arterial inflow (Ainf) [r=0.54; p=0.012] and resting venous outflow (Vout) [r=0.56; p=0.016]. Lastly, HG strength was associated with Vcap [r=0.57; p=0.007] and Vout [r=0.67; p=0.001]. The 2nd study examined the relationship between FVF and exercise tolerance (ExT) in 20 patients with HF [age: 59 ± 13 years] and 10 age-matched controls [age: 51 ± 16 years. The ExT was measured as the maximum …

Barriers To Participation In Educational Programs As Perceived By First-Time Enrolling Freshmen In Higher Education, Julie Cason Mcdonald Jan 2003

Barriers To Participation In Educational Programs As Perceived By First-Time Enrolling Freshmen In Higher Education, Julie Cason Mcdonald

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Institutions of higher education face exceptional challenges in today’s environment. College costs are increasing, funding is decreasing and/or limited, public confidence is diminishing, the work-place is changing, and a shrinking pool of traditional-age college students exists. This creates an environment where colleges and universities find themselves competing for students. So that these institutions of higher education may better understand how to recruit, advise, and retain students, one must consider the barriers first-time freshmen encounter in the pursuit of formal learning as they enter college. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine the perceived barriers to educational participation held …

Bathroom Issues, Craig Edward Clifford Jan 2003

Bathroom Issues, Craig Edward Clifford

LSU Master's Theses

"Obscenity is a human manifestation. The toilet has no central nervous system. No level of consciousness. It is not aware; it is a dumb toilet; it cannot be obscene; it's impossible." Lenny Bruce How to Talk Dirty and Influence People Things that make people uncomfortable intrigue me and I find that these same things are very ones that make us laugh the hardest. The fact that sex and bodily functions both make people laugh in addition to making them feel uncomfortable is no accident.

On Implementing Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures, Hatem Mahmoud El-Sayed El-Boghdadi Jan 2003

On Implementing Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures, Hatem Mahmoud El-Sayed El-Boghdadi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dynamically reconfigurable architectures have the ability to change their structure at each step of a computation. This dissertation studies various aspects of implementing dynamic reconfiguration, ranging from hardware building blocks and low-level architectures to modeling issues and high-level algorithm design. First we derive conditions under which classes of communication sets can be optimally scheduled on the circuit-switched tree (CST). Then we present a method to configure the CST to perform in constant time all communications scheduled for a step. This results in a constant time implementation of a step of a segmentable bus, a fundamental dynamically reconfigurable structure. We introduce …

As The Ravens Watch: Exploring The Oracle, Kathryn Lavender Hunter Jan 2003

As The Ravens Watch: Exploring The Oracle, Kathryn Lavender Hunter

LSU Master's Theses

I believe in the process in which the artist never works alone but always in collaboration with the elements of chance. As an artist I live and work everyday collaborating with chance, from reading my cards to creating ethereal birds. As I sew pieces together, the thread becomes another element of the image by chance, stitches to lines, lines to pattern. Chance leads the birds to portraying their own personality as they are each created, one’s head tilts to the right while another sits tall with dignity. This work is about the connection to the subconscious, my connection to it …

Denoising Techniques - A Comparison, Sarita Veera Dangeti Jan 2003

Denoising Techniques - A Comparison, Sarita Veera Dangeti

LSU Master's Theses

Visual information transmitted in the form of digital images is becoming a major method of communication in the modern age, but the image obtained after transmission is often corrupted with noise. The received image needs processing before it can be used in applications. Image denoising involves the manipulation of the image data to produce a visually high quality image. This thesis reviews the existing denoising algorithms, such as filtering approach, wavelet based approach, and multifractal approach, and performs their comparative study. Different noise models including additive and multiplicative types are used. They include Gaussian noise, salt and pepper noise, speckle …

Supply Chain Models For An Assembly System With Preprocessing Of Raw Materials, Mohammad Anwar Ashek Rahman Jan 2003

Supply Chain Models For An Assembly System With Preprocessing Of Raw Materials, Mohammad Anwar Ashek Rahman

LSU Master's Theses

An assembly line that procures raw materials from outside suppliers and processes the materials into finished products is considered in this research. An ordering policy is proposed for raw materials to meet the requirement of a production facility, which, in turn, must deliver finish products in a fixed quantity at a fixed time interval to the outside buyers. Two different types of raw materials, ‘unfinished’ and ‘ready-to-use’, are procured for the manufacturing system. The ‘unfinished raw materials’ are turned into ‘processed raw materials’ after preprocessing. In the assembly line, the ‘processed raw materials’ and the ‘ready raw materials’ are assembled …

People with developmental disabilities often display deficiencies in self-management and social skills in community based settings. Difficulties with self-management and social skills tend to pose particular difficulties for performing valued adult roles. Tools from behavior therapy have the potential to assist rehabilitation counselors in their work with consumers with developmental disabilities to overcome the negative impacts of functional limitations on expressing behaviors needed for success in community-based settings. This article presents a review of the behavior therapy literature regarding self-management and social skills training techniques rehabilitation counselors can use in their work with consumers with developmental disabilities in areas including …

The Attack Will Go On The 317th Infantry Regiment In World War Ii, Dean James Dominique Jan 2003

The Attack Will Go On The 317th Infantry Regiment In World War Ii, Dean James Dominique

LSU Master's Theses

The 317th Infantry Regiment was reactivated on July 15, 1942 as a subordinate element of the 80th Infantry Division. The regiment trained for two years in Tennessee, Kansas, Arizona, California, and finally New Jersey before departing for England in June 1944. Entering the European continent after D-Day, the regiment experienced its first combat in August 1944 when it assisted in closing the gap at Falaise and spearheaded Third Army's attack on Nancy. The 317th sat through the logistics shortfall that stopped the Third Army's advance during the "October Pause" in the fall of 1944. But then in November the regiment …

Influences On State-Level Policies For Wildfire Risk Reduction, Marios Anastasis Valiantis Jan 2003

Influences On State-Level Policies For Wildfire Risk Reduction, Marios Anastasis Valiantis

LSU Master's Theses

Wildland fires are part of the United State’s history and culture. The human dimension of State wildland fire management, - the relationship of people and wildland fire in America- is an important and driving force in how federal and state agencies respond to wildland fire, now and in the future. In many ways, the critical element for the management of wildland fire is the management of people, communities, and organizations. Explosive growth in the wildland-urban interface puts entire communities, their associated infrastructure and the socioeconomic fabric that holds communities together at a high risk from wildland fire. Year after year …

"Argument Is War"-Or Is It A Game Of Chess? : Multiple Meanings In The Analysis Of Implicit Metaphors, L. David Ritchie Jan 2003

"Argument Is War"-Or Is It A Game Of Chess? : Multiple Meanings In The Analysis Of Implicit Metaphors, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Both Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Vervaeke and Kennedy (1996), in their critique of Lakoff and Johnson, drew narrowly from a broad range of reasonable interpretations of the metaphors they analyzed. Expanding the interpretations vitiates many of Vervaeke and Kennedy's criticisms, but it supports their call for an open interpretation of groups of metaphors and points toward a more complex elaboration of the theories put forth by Lakoff and Johnson. The results of applying this approach to "ARGUMENT IS WAR" suggest that war is not necessarily the primary conceptual metaphor for contentious argument, as Lakoff and Johnson claimed. Rather, there …

Beavers, Firs, Salmon, And Falling Water: Pacific Northwest Regionalism And The Environment, William L. Lang Jan 2003

Beavers, Firs, Salmon, And Falling Water: Pacific Northwest Regionalism And The Environment, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Discusses the importance of salmon in defining environmental understanding in the Pacific Northwest. Dam construction, population influx, economic development, and politics have dramatically changed the geography of Oregon Country since 1850. The technological alterations and population growth redefined the sense of place. However, salmon has remained the most important icon of the Pacific Northwest, both for Native Americans and for nonnatives have who worked to save the salmon from extinction. Salmon have become a "living metaphor" for the region, and their fate reflects an understanding of historical context and the role of people in their relationship to the environment in …

Subglacial Thermal Balance Permits Ongoing Grounding Line Retreat Along The Siple Coast Of West Antarctica, Byron R. Parizek, Richard B. Alley, Christina L. Hulbe Jan 2003

Subglacial Thermal Balance Permits Ongoing Grounding Line Retreat Along The Siple Coast Of West Antarctica, Byron R. Parizek, Richard B. Alley, Christina L. Hulbe

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Changes in the discharge of West Antarctic ice streams are of potential concern with respect to global sea level. The six relatively thin, fast-flowing Ross ice streams are of interest as low-slope end-members among Antarctic ice streams. Extensive research has demonstrated that these "rivers of ice" have a history of relatively high-frequency (óO(100) years), asynchronous discharge variations with evolving lateral boundaries. Amidst this variability, a ~1300 km grounding-line retreat has occurred since the Last GlacialMaximum. Numerical studies of Ice Stream D (Parizek and others, 2002) indicate that a proposed thermal-regulation mechanism(Clarke and Marshall, 1998; Hulbe and MacAyeal,1999; Tulaczyk and others, …
