A Model Of Norm Development For Computer-Mediated Teamwork, Charles R. Graham Jan 2003

A Model Of Norm Development For Computer-Mediated Teamwork, Charles R. Graham

Faculty Publications

The process of establishing norms is an important aspect of group dynamics. Most, if not all, of the major models of group development incorporate norming as an important part of the process. However, little is understood and agreed on regarding how norms develop. With the increased availability and power of technology to connect people at remote sites, the popularity of computer-mediated teamwork has increased dramatically. This new communication context brings with it some dramatic differences from the traditional face-to-face context, along with a need to understand how norms develop in this environment. This study investigates the norming process engaged in by …

Comparison Of Particle Swarm Optimization And Backpropagation As Training Algorithms For Neural Networks, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Venu Gopal Gudise Jan 2003

Comparison Of Particle Swarm Optimization And Backpropagation As Training Algorithms For Neural Networks, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Venu Gopal Gudise

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) motivated by the social behavior of organisms, is a step up to existing evolutionary algorithms for optimization of continuous nonlinear functions. Backpropagation (BP) is generally used for neural network training. Choosing a proper algorithm for training a neural network is very important. In this paper, a comparative study is made on the computational requirements of the PSO and BP as training algorithms for neural networks. Results are presented for a feedforward neural network learning a nonlinear function and these results show that the feedforward neural network weights converge faster with the PSO than with the BP …

Control Of Cascaded Multi-Level Inverters, Keith Corzine, Fang Zheng Peng, J. Wang, M. W. Wielebski Jan 2003

Control Of Cascaded Multi-Level Inverters, Keith Corzine, Fang Zheng Peng, J. Wang, M. W. Wielebski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new type of multi-level inverter is introduced which is created by cascading two three-phase three-level inverters using the load connection. This new inverter can operate as a nine-level inverter and naturally splits the power conversion into a higher voltage lower-frequency inverter and a lower-voltage higher frequency inverter. This type of system presents particular advantages to naval ship propulsion systems which rely on high power quality, survivable drives. New control methods are described involving both joint and separate control of the individual three-level inverters. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both controls. A laboratory set-up at the Naval Surface Warfare …

Spectral Measures And Perceptual Ratings Of Hypokinetic Dysarthria, Christopher Dromey Jan 2003

Spectral Measures And Perceptual Ratings Of Hypokinetic Dysarthria, Christopher Dromey

Faculty Publications

Ten individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) and hypokinetic dysarthria were compared with age-matched neurologically normal (NN) speakers on acoustic measures from speaking and vowel phonation tasks as well as on perceptual ratings of connected speech. Listeners identified differences between the groups when asked to judge the severity of vocal and articulatory impairment during reading. Several conventional acoustic measures failed to differentiate speakers with PD from NN speakers. However, measures of the shape (statistical moments) of the long term average spectrum (LTAS) revealed statistically significant differences between the groups across vowel phonation, reading and monologue tasks. The ease of computation of …

A Framework To Assess The Value Of Web Services, Robert Campbell Jan 2003

A Framework To Assess The Value Of Web Services, Robert Campbell

Theses

Large organizations often begin to adopt new software technologies prior to establishing appropriate value frameworks. This approach may produce sub-optimal investment decisions and technology adoption rates, and introduce excessive risk. In this thesis, a value-based framework is developed for assessing the impact of Web Services technology investments on business systems development. The value factors included in the framework are data management, application development and deployment, system integration, and response time to market opportunities.

The U.S. M-Business Market: Fad Or The Future, Gary Brennan Jan 2003

The U.S. M-Business Market: Fad Or The Future, Gary Brennan

Theses

M-Business is information available on any device, anywhere and at anytime, offering businesses in any industry the potential to expand markets, improve their services and reduce costs. The U.S. m-business market is still in its infancy and is a few years away from becoming a growth market. This is due to a few reasons, which are the lack of standards for connectivity and service, no real applications to support the market and the lack of strong encryption to support m-business and e-commerce. M-business is not a fad but a potential new channel for business operations. This thesis will address the …

Cultural Differences And Organizational Leadership: Cultural Difference As Barriers To The Trans-Cultural Application Of The Concept Of Organizational Leadership, Jennifer Matic Jan 2003

Cultural Differences And Organizational Leadership: Cultural Difference As Barriers To The Trans-Cultural Application Of The Concept Of Organizational Leadership, Jennifer Matic

Theses

This study examined the impact of cultural differences on the trans-cultural application of the concept of organizational leadership. The significance of four cultural dimensions (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, and masculinity) (Hofstede, G., 1980) towards the concept of organizational leadership (Rost, J.C, 1991) was discussed and a survey as created to test for cultural differences from a leadership perspective. American and Croatian college students then completed the survey. Results showed cultural similarities for all cultural dimensions with the exception of uncertainty avoidance, which was found to be higher for the American sample than the Croatian. Consequently, it can be said …

From making telephone calls to organizing demonstrations, grassroots groups can begin saving money, time, and human resources. The Internet frees people from physical barriers and borders. I have investigated current …

Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll Jan 2003

Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ADHD is one of the most frequently diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States today; however, diagnostic specificity remains challenging. Accepted models of ADHD routinely highlight the role of executive function (EF) deficits as a core feature of ADHD. However, performance based measures of EF do not consistently discriminate between ADHD and no-ADHD clinical groups. Research has supported use of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) in discriminating between ADHD and no-ADHD and between subtypes. However, EF deficits can occur for various reasons. Broad range behavior rating scales help identify areas of behavioral concern that may aid clinicians …

Cellular Trafficking Properties And Physiological Functions Of The Á1-Adrenoceptor Subtypes, Dan Chalothorn Jan 2003

Cellular Trafficking Properties And Physiological Functions Of The Á1-Adrenoceptor Subtypes, Dan Chalothorn

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The 1-adrenoceptors (1-ARs) serve as an interface between the sympathetic nervous system and the cardiovascular system where they are mediators of systemic arterial blood pressure, initiators of positive inotropy, and regulators of cellular growth responses. There are three subtypes: 1A-, 1B-, and 1D-ARs. This dissertation research investigated the trafficking properties of the 1-ARs at the cellular level as well as physiological relevance of the 1-ARs at the tissue level. In vitro studies using transiently transfected 1-AR/GFP subtypes revealed distinct basal localization patterns and different agonist-mediated activation and desensitization properties. The 1A- and the 1B-AR/GFP subtypes displayed agonist-mediated receptor redistribution, in …

The Incidence Of Mental And Behavioral Disturbances In Dementia: The Cache County Study, Martin Steinberg, Jeannie-Marie E. Sheppard, Joann T. Tschanz, Maria C. Norton, David C. Steffens, John C. S. Breitner, Constantine G.. Lyketsos

Psychology Faculty Publications

A population-based prevalence sample of 355 residents of Cache County, Utah, who were diagnosed with dementia, was rated on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Of the 355 residents, 119 had no neuropsychiatric symptoms at baseline and were, consequently, at risk for incident mental and behavioral disturbances. The NPI was readministered approximately 18 months later to 61 surviving participants. Sixty-nine percent developed at least one mental or behavioral symptom. Delusions were most common (28%), followed by apathy (21%), and aberrant motor behavior (21%). When this incidence rate of 69% was combined with a previously estimated prevalence rate of 61%, the cumulative 18-month …

New Frontiers In Christian Fiction, Leanne Hardy Jan 2003

New Frontiers In Christian Fiction, Leanne Hardy

The Christian Librarian

Christian fiction must strive for a new quality of writing and be willing to go beyond what is "safe" if it is going to have an impact outside the church. Although such fiction may include language and situations that are not acceptable among Christians, it will glorify God by presenting the world as he sees it and grappling with deep spiritual issues rather than using cliches to brush over them. Librarians should support quality Christian fiction by purchasing it, recommending it and praying for those in the publishing industry.

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Pdf/X Premedia Workflows, Nicholas E. Doyle Jan 2003

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Pdf/X Premedia Workflows, Nicholas E. Doyle

Theses

PDF/X technology was introduced in the mid 90's with the intentions of improving and automating the prepress workflows. Standards committees such as CGATS (Committee for Graphic Arts Technical Standards) and DDAP (Digital Distribution of Advertisers for Publications) started to draft and implement a plan of action to succeed the current file formats being used in premedia workflows. Previous file submissions that were handed off from advertising and design agencies became too time-consuming to prepare them for the final run. Top-tier printing and publishing companies such as RR Donnelley, Quad Graphics, Vertis, and Time Inc, started to invest in new technology …
