Synchronization Of Spatiotemporal Patterns In Locally Coupled Excitable Media, Michael Hildebrand, Jianxia Cui, Eugene Mihaliuk, Jichang Wang, Kenneth Showalter Jan 2003

Synchronization Of Spatiotemporal Patterns In Locally Coupled Excitable Media, Michael Hildebrand, Jianxia Cui, Eugene Mihaliuk, Jichang Wang, Kenneth Showalter

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The synchronization of two distributed Belousov-Zhabotinsky systems is experimentally and theoretically investigated. Symmetric local coupling of the systems is made possible with the use of a video camera-projector scheme. The spatial disorder of the coupled systems, with random initial configurations of spirals, gradually decreases until a final state is attained, which corresponds to a synchronized state with a single spiral in each system. The experimental observations are confirmed with numerical simulations of two identical Oregonator models with symmetric local coupling, and a systematic study reveals generalized synchronization of spiral waves. Several different types of synchronization attractors are distinguished.

Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent Jan 2003

Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent

Honors Theses

Indigenous education became prevalent in the ideology of the Mexican government after the Revolution on 1911. The leading school of thought about how to integrate Mexico’s indigenous population was led by anthropologists. Through indigenismo, the government adopted policies that would explore indigenous communities and promote them into the national identity. Bilingual education became one of the most important instruments of the movement under the direction of the Instituto Nacional Indigenista. I collected my data from a wealth of resources. One source of information the historical texts written on Mexican history. Anthropological texts also aided in the discussion of indigenous people …

The Effects Of Autologous Platelet Gel On The Tensile Strength Of Incisional Wounds, Thomas Matthew Jones Jan 2003

The Effects Of Autologous Platelet Gel On The Tensile Strength Of Incisional Wounds, Thomas Matthew Jones

Honors Theses

Autologous platelet gel (APG) is already being used in clinical cases, as are other blood products such as fibrin glue and platelet lysate. Fibrin sealants have been show to stop capillary seepage and so reduce occurrences of hemotoma and edema, while platelets have been shown to contain a host of growth factors that promote healing including TGF-p, PDGF, lGF-1, TNF, and FGF. Platelet gel combines the hemostatic properties of fibrin glues with the growth factors contained in platelets. By harvesting the platelet-rich plasma from autologous blood, the risks of viral transmission and tissue incompatibility that are often associated with blood …

A Comparison Of Peaceful And Violent Separatist Movements, William Dorsey Pieschel Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Peaceful And Violent Separatist Movements, William Dorsey Pieschel

Honors Theses

The following work is an attempt to understand why separatist movements become violent. In any given region of the world under any given state, there will always be a group of people who are not content with the present order of government. If this group is large enough, it will most likely try to alter the structure of the government, which often takes the form of separatism. I want to understand the methods of these separatist movements and specifically, why some resort to violence and others do not. The first part of my thesis analyzes different separatist movements. I chose …

What's In A Name?: Exploring Title Designations In Child And Youth Care In Ireland, Niall C. Mcelwee, Thom Garfat

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper presents the findings of empirical research conducted with 338 thirdlevel social care students across seven sites and addresses a national Irish debate on title designations currently in use for people working in the social care area of the 'caring professions' within the Republic ofIreiand. The research limits itself to what is understood in international systems as 'child and youth care' or 'social care'. A number of title designations Irish practitioners might strategically adopt are presented, whilst some of the advantages and disadvantages of choosing particular titles are explored. The main finding of this study is that there remains …

The Training Implications Of A Social Care Approach To Working With Older People, Carmel Gallagher, Kathleen Kennedy Jan 2003

The Training Implications Of A Social Care Approach To Working With Older People, Carmel Gallagher, Kathleen Kennedy

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

While care of older people involves both medical and social care nursing homes are essentially an extension of the functions of the home rather than of a hospital. The largest group of employees in residential care settings are nurses and care attendants. A medical model could be said to dominate not a social care approach. However there has been a move away from large institutional settings with a hospital atmosphere to smaller more homely units where there is more emphasis on purposive activity and links with the community. Traditionally many of the day services for older people were provided by …

Long Time Behavior Of Solutions To The 3d Compressible Euler Equations With Damping, Thomas C. Sideris, Becca Thomases, Dehua Wang Jan 2003

Long Time Behavior Of Solutions To The 3d Compressible Euler Equations With Damping, Thomas C. Sideris, Becca Thomases, Dehua Wang

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

The effect of damping on the large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional compressible Euler equations is studied. It is proved that damping prevents the development of singularities in small amplitude classical solutions, using an equivalent reformulation of the Cauchy problem to obtain effective energy estimates. The full solution relaxes in the maximum norm to the constant background state at a rate of t-3/2. While the fluid vorticity decays to zero exponentially fast in time, the full solution does not decay exponentially. Formation of singularities is also exhibited for large data.

Into The Star Chamber: Does The United States Engage In The Use Of Torture Or Similar Illegal Practices In The War On Terror, Jeffrey F. Addicott

Faculty Articles

Because of the dangers presented by al-Qaeda style terrorism, the United States has crafted a variety of robust anti-terrorism responses. One of the more controversial of these is the indefinite detention of suspected enemy combatants, and the associated question as to whether the United States can and does employ torture.

Many prominent voices, such as Professor Alan Dershowitz, have advocated a judicial exception allowing torture as an interrogation tool in special instances, but the United States has struggled to find an appropriate balance between civil liberties and security concerns. To succeed in the War on Terror, the U.S. cannot allow …

Involuntary Treatment Of The Mentally Ill: Autonomy Is Asking The Wrong Question, Dora W. Klein Jan 2003

Involuntary Treatment Of The Mentally Ill: Autonomy Is Asking The Wrong Question, Dora W. Klein

Faculty Articles

When determining if involuntary treatment is appropriate, the proper question for courts to ask is not whether autonomy is preferable to involuntary treatment, but whether no treatment at all is preferable to involuntary treatment. When legislatures develop and courts apply statutes governing civil commitment, the interests at stake should be considered not at the abstract level of "freedom" or "autonomy," but rather at the concrete level of the consequences that are likely to result from providing or not providing involuntary treatment. Only by examining the particular interests that are likely to be affected can informed decisions be made about when …

Erisa: A Co-Fiduciary Has No Right To Contribution And Indemnity, George Lee Flint Jr, Philip W. Moore Jr Jan 2003

Erisa: A Co-Fiduciary Has No Right To Contribution And Indemnity, George Lee Flint Jr, Philip W. Moore Jr

Faculty Articles

Because retirement plans involve large amounts of money, large numbers of people, and fiduciaries with conflicts of interests, Congress designed ERISA to differ from traditional trust law to meet these specific needs and important policy concerns. Before ERISA, fiduciaries and employers often manipulated lack of oversight and conflict of interests to the detriment of the beneficiaries. ERISA raised the standards owed by fiduciaries and established a policing system that required professional fiduciaries to monitor non-professional fiduciaries, thereby forcing non-professional fiduciaries to leave the field or seek expert advice. These provisions created co-fiduciary liability by imputing the liability of the co-fiduciary …

Globalization In A Fallen World: Redeeming Dust, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 2003

Globalization In A Fallen World: Redeeming Dust, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

The paradigm used in discussions about academic globalization is the “rational” discourse of the late twentieth century. This paradigm is manifested in university and political-cultural commentary in the United States and Great Britain. The term “globalization” immediately evokes a paradox. The paradox of the globe is it risks confusing itself with the universe. One key axis of of the paradox is between “good” globalization and “bad” globalization, another between the “is” and the “ought” of globalization.

A world-wide culture, democracy, or economy is inherently fallen. Attending to the forces that would pull us back together is one key to overcome …

Legal Obstacles To Bringing The Twenty-First Century In The Classroom: Stop Being Creative, You May Already Be In Trouble, Andre Hampton Jan 2003

Legal Obstacles To Bringing The Twenty-First Century In The Classroom: Stop Being Creative, You May Already Be In Trouble, Andre Hampton

Faculty Articles

There are unimaginable benefits available if legal educators can bring the law classroom into the twenty-first century through the use of popular media and celebrities in their teaching. With the introduction of “pop culture,” the professor can permanently alter the student's view of the course material. Bringing pop culture into the classroom will make the course material more relevant to our students’ lives outside the classroom. This will enhance both their willingness and their ability to master legal concepts.

There are two major obstacles to bringing pop culture into the classroom. The initial major obstacle is the Copyright Act of …

Essential Components Of Psychosocial Care For Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients, Beverly Lee Laird Jan 2003

Essential Components Of Psychosocial Care For Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients, Beverly Lee Laird

All ETDs from UAB

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States, and, today, there are approximately 1.7 million women living with breast cancer. Due to earlier detection and better treatments, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer has increased dramatically in the past few decades. With better survival rates has come increased attention to other needs for cancer patients, including information and psychosocial support. Providing appropriate psychosocial care as an adjunct to standard medical treatment is expected to improve quality of life for cancer survivors, which is one of the three major 2015 goals for the American …

Smoking Cessation Counseling For Cystic Fibrosis Patient Caregivers And Significant Others: Perceptions Of Care Center Directors And Nurse Coordinators, Sheryl Marie Strasser

All ETDs from UAB

For individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), annual exams are part of the typical management regimen. These exams afford clinicians a regular opportunity to address potential sources of environmental tobacco smoke—a major cause of illness for children—by counseling CF patients' parents and significant others. Directors and coordinators were targeted in this study because of their system-level potential to impact center practices. The purpose of this study was to determine factors that influence CF care center adoption of the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality smoking cessation counseling guidelines (5 A model). A cross-sectional fax survey design was used. Of the …
