Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were killed by cervical dislocation, electric shock and drowning to investigate the correlations between types of death and levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in heart tissue after death. The hearts were taken out after death and ATP, ADP and AMP levels in the heart muscle were measured. The ATP and ADP levels were lower in rats killed by electric shock and with drowning. This may be due to ventricular fibrillation caused by electric shock in the electric shock group, and debilitation of rats in the drowning group before death, which …

Optimisation Of Uv Treatment Duration To Induce Haploid Androgenesis In The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.), İsmi̇han Karayücel, Sedat Karayücel
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The optimum UV duration times of eggs were examined in order to develop a simple and safe method for inducing androgenetic development in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The yield of androgenetic haploid O. niloticus to the pigmentation stage was 18.53 ± 5.3% (relative to controls) with an optimal UV irradiation dose of 540 Jm^{-2} (at 150 µWcm^{-2 }) for 6 min. Most embryos developing after fertilisation with normal spermatozoa showed abnormal morphology and a haploid number of chromosomes (n = 22). The success of oocyte denucleation was also assessed by using the recessive "blond" skin pigmentation character.

The Effects Of Electrical Stimulation On The Sensory And Textural Quality Properties Of Mutton Carcasses, Mete Yanar, Hasan Yeti̇m
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of electrical stimulation (ES) on the sensory and textural quality characteristics of mutton carcasses from elderly ewes. For this purpose, 14 ovine carcasses from 3-5-year-old ewes were subjected to ES with 350 V, and the effects of ES on the organoleptic and instron textural parameters were evaluated. The ES significantly (P < 0.01) improved the panel tenderness scores of the Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle. Some of the Instron Warner Bratzler Shear parameters such as peak force and initial yield force values of the LD muscle were also highly significantly (P < 0.01) affected by ES, while the Semimembranosus (SM) muscle was not affected. Hardness and peak force 2 values of LD obtained from the Instron compression test were also significantly (P < 0.05) affected by ES. However, Instron compression parameters of SM muscles were not significantly influenced by ES treatment. The results revealed that the ES could considerably improve the tenderness of the LD from mutton carcasses. In conclusion, the application of ES to mutton carcasses from elderly ewes could be beneficial for the meat industry by increasing the merchandising value and quality of this sort of carcass.

Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Faeces From Chickens, Sheep And Cattle In Elazığ Province, Hakan Kalender
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Faecal samples collected from 206 chickens, 170 sheep and 130 cattle were investigated for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in animals slaughtered at local abattoirs in Elazığ. The prevalance of L. monocytogenes was 4.36% in chickens, 0.58% in sheep and 1.53% in cattle. Of the 12 L. monocytogenes isolates, seven (58.33%) and five (41.66%) belonged to serotypes 1 and 4, respectively. Other species isolated were L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. murrayi and L. grayi. These results indicate that animal faeces could be a source of contamination of carcasses with L. monocytogenes and may lead to foodborne listeriosis.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Heparin is a heterogeneous mixture of highly charged glycosaminoglycans that can exert a variety of biological and biochemical effects. Increasing attention is being paid to its role in cellular processes such as angiogenesis, cellular attachment, growth modulation and smooth muscle cell proliferation. The characterisation of cellular receptors for heparin-binding proteins is a rational step in the quest to elucidate the biochemical basis of specific binding and heparin-mediated responses. We studied the distribution of heparin-binding lectin at the optical level during bovine thymus development on sections of fixed tissue using antibodies raised against this lectin. The presence of ligands accessible to …

Glycobiology Current Molecular Biology, Sabi̇re Karaçali
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Carbohydrate chemistry evolved into carbohydrate biochemistry and gradually into the biology of carbohydrates, or glycobiology, at the end of the last century. Glycobiology is the new research area of modern molecular biology, and it investigates the structure, biosynthesis and biological functions of glycans. The numbers, linkage types (\alpha or \beta), positions, binding points and functional group differences of monosaccharides create microheterogeneity. Thus, numerous glycoforms with precise structural differences occur. Each glycoform as a distinct biological ligand has a different function. Studies in glycobiology have concentrated on determining molecular structures and glycosylation mechanisms, investigating biological control mechanisms and the phenotypic characteristics …

The proportion of Turkey's cattle that were from high-gene cattle breeds and their crosses has increased from 0.8% to 60.7% over the last four decades. While the total number of cattle declined by 1.65 million head, total milk and meat production increased by 298% and 428% to 8.91 million and 359,000 tons, respectively. At the same time, milk per cow and meat per head increased by 184% and 144% to 1688 kg and 171 kg, respectively. According to a three-stage least-square regression analysis, milk per cow and meat per head, support policies since 1972 and milk and meat prices had …

Effect Of Using Urtica Dioica L. On The Quality Of Turkish Sucuk (Turkish Style Dry Sausage), Muhammet İrfan Aksu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Urtica dioica L. has become a very important plant, with beneficial effects on human health all over the world. In this study, the possibility of using U. dioica L. as an ingredient in Turkish sucuk was investigated. Turkish sucuk with U. dioica L. was evaluated in terms of its chemical, physical, and sensory attributes. The results showed that the level of U. dioica L. (0%, 1%, 3% and 5%) and ripening period (0, 3, 7, 10 and 14 days) had a significant effect on the moisture, pH, residual nitrite, L* and +a* values of sucuk (p < 0.01). +b* values were affected more by the ripening period (p < 0.01) than by the level of U. dioica L. (p < 0.05). Sensory evaluations showed that the addition of U. dioica L. to sucuk (cooked and uncooked) effected the sensory attributes compared with the control sucuk.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The relationships of udder and teat morphology, parity, and lactation stage with subclinical mastitis were investigated in cows raised in herds registered with the Izmir Holstein Breeders Association. Data from 887 cows in 21 herds were used. The udder and teat morphology of the cows was scored. Detection of subclinical mastitis was performed by a hand-held device measuring the electrical conductivity of the milk. It was found that 55.9% of cows had trough-shaped udders, 25.9% had ball-shaped udders, 11.5% had rear-heavy udders, and 6.7% had pendulous udders. Teats were cylindrical in 73.3%, funnel-shaped in 18.8%, pear-shaped in 3.2%, and long …
The Effects Of Replacing Fish Oil With Vegetable Oils In Starter Feeds On The Liver Fat Composition Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758), Mustafa Yildiz, Erdal Şener
The Effects Of Replacing Fish Oil With Vegetable Oils In Starter Feeds On The Liver Fat Composition Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758), Mustafa Yildiz, Erdal Şener
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effects of replacing fish oil with soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and olive oil in starter feeds on the vicerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and liver fatty acid composition of the sea bass were studied. Juvenile sea bass (initial weight = 7.58 ± 0.13 g) were fed experimental diets for 75 days. The fish were then killed and liver samples were collected. The lowest total crude fat value (17.61%) was found in the fish fed the fish oil diet. The highest total crude fat value (34.30%) was found in the fish fed the olive oil diet (P < 0.05). Similarly, the fish fed the fish oil diet had the lowest hepatosomatic index value (2.08) and all the fish fed vegetable oils had similarly high hepatosomatic index values (P < 0.05). Likewise, vicerosomatic index values were lowest (9.06%) in the fish fed fish oil and highest in the fish fed soybean and other vegetable oils (P < 0.05). Fatty acid analyses showed that EPA and DHA from n-3 HUFA's in the fish fed the fish oil diet, linolenic acid (18:3n-3) and linoleic acid (18:2n-6) in the fish fed the soybean oil diet and oleic acid (18:1n-9) in the fish fed the olive oil diet were higher than in the fish fed the other diets.

The Effects Of Some Alternative Feed Additives For Antibiotic Growth Promoters On The Performance And Gut Microflora Of Broiler Chicks, Necmetti̇n Ceylan, İbrahi̇m Çi̇ftçi̇, Zi̇ya İlhan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this research, the effects of some alternative feed additives for antibiotic growth promoters on performance and gut microflora were examined using 500, one-day-old Ross 508 broiler chicks. Commercial corn-soy-based broiler starter and finisher diets were formulated as basal diets for control treatment. Basal diets were supplemented with an antibiotic growth promoter, a probiotic, a prebiotic (mannan oligosaccharide) and a humic-acid-based mixture, respectively. It total, five dietary treatments were employed in the experiment. Live weight, weight gain and feed consumption values were not affected significantly by dietary treatments throughout the experiment (P > 0,05). However, chicks which received diets supplemented with …

In this study, the effects of food supplemented with different levels of DL-alanin and L-glutamic acid (1% and 2%) on the growth of sea bass juveniles were investigated. Fish fed with L-glutamic acid (1% of diet) and DL-alanin (1% of diet) supplemented diets had greater weight gains (54.23 ± 1.51 g and 55.03 ± 1.69 g, respectively) than those fed with a control diet (47.59 ± 1.83 g) (p < 0.05). It was found that the groups fed with 1% of attractant-supplemented diets had better food conversion ratios (1.11 and 1.13, respectively) than the control group (1.22) (p < 0.05). It was also found that the wet weight gain and food conversion ratios of the groups fed with 2% L-glutamic acid and DL-alanine were similar to those fed with the control diet and 1% attractant-supplemented diets (p > 0.05).
