Ischemia Pre-Conditioning And The Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase, Jessica Jean Holt Jan 2003

Ischemia Pre-Conditioning And The Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase, Jessica Jean Holt

Honors Theses

Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The gracilis muscle flap with femoral vascular pedicle was dissected and used as a flap model. The ischemic preconditioning period consisted of three cycles of clamping the pedicle for 10 minutes followed by 10 minutes of reperfusion resulting in a total of 1 hour. In part I, the experimental group underwent the ischemic preconditioning for 1 hour. In the control group, the flaps were dissected without the clamping of the pedicle. Both groups were then subjected to 4 hours of global ischemia by continuous pedicle clamping, after which the flaps were …

The Effects Of Autologous Platelet Gel On The Tensile Strength Of Incisional Wounds, Thomas Matthew Jones Jan 2003

The Effects Of Autologous Platelet Gel On The Tensile Strength Of Incisional Wounds, Thomas Matthew Jones

Honors Theses

Autologous platelet gel (APG) is already being used in clinical cases, as are other blood products such as fibrin glue and platelet lysate. Fibrin sealants have been show to stop capillary seepage and so reduce occurrences of hemotoma and edema, while platelets have been shown to contain a host of growth factors that promote healing including TGF-p, PDGF, lGF-1, TNF, and FGF. Platelet gel combines the hemostatic properties of fibrin glues with the growth factors contained in platelets. By harvesting the platelet-rich plasma from autologous blood, the risks of viral transmission and tissue incompatibility that are often associated with blood …

Strong Black Woman: An Examination Of Cultural Images Of Black Women, Tamika Renee Montgomery Jan 2003

Strong Black Woman: An Examination Of Cultural Images Of Black Women, Tamika Renee Montgomery

Honors Theses

Through literary works and life experiences and in an effort to dispel negative images, an unrealistic image of a strong black woman has been presented to society. As a black woman surrounded by black women who have attempted to personify this superwoman image, and more importantly as a black woman who has been encouraged to adopt this image, I have done research to discover if this woman truly exists. I have read a number of literary works that span over the entire twentieth century, examined cultural and psychological studies relevant to the black woman. I also did research on the …

Aspects Of Schooling Behavior In The Golden Shiner, Notemigonus Crysoleucas: Nearest Neighbor Distance, Angle Of Sqimming, And Antiphasic Coupling, Megan Thomas Brown Jan 2003

Aspects Of Schooling Behavior In The Golden Shiner, Notemigonus Crysoleucas: Nearest Neighbor Distance, Angle Of Sqimming, And Antiphasic Coupling, Megan Thomas Brown

Honors Theses

Many fish swim in schools at some point in their life. This behavior is beneficial for feeding and safety from predators, and may reduce energy expenditure during swimming. The hydrodynamic theory of schooling states that fish in a school take advantage of the wakes produced by other members of the school. This theory has been both supported and refuted in various studies. Using a swim tunnel, nearest neighbor distance, antiphasic coupling and the angle of swimming were studied in golden shiners {Notemigonus crysoleucas) while schooling. A plexiglass container placed inside the swim tunnel restricted fish to swimming in one plane …

Harm To The "Fabric Of Society" As A Basis For Regulating Otherwise Harmless Conduct: Notes On A Theme From Ravin V. State, Eric A. Johnson Jan 2003

Harm To The "Fabric Of Society" As A Basis For Regulating Otherwise Harmless Conduct: Notes On A Theme From Ravin V. State, Eric A. Johnson

Seattle University Law Review

This article explores the possibility that harm to the fabric of society provides the best justification for some statutes that prohibit otherwise harmless conduct. This article considers three illustrations: first, the incest statutes, which, even in progressive states like Alaska and New York, prohibit a wide array of basically harmless conduct; second, a Massachusetts statute regulating the use of human silhouettes in target practice; and finally, legislation that would prohibit the medical procedure known as "partial-birth abortion.'" After discussing these illustrations, there is a close analysis of the general argument for the preservation of moral reaction patterns. The ultimate validity …

Squeezing Daubert Out Of The Picture, Richard D. Friedman Jan 2003

Squeezing Daubert Out Of The Picture, Richard D. Friedman

Articles

In this essay, I will offer some thoughts on how we might reframe the issues governing the admissibility of expert evidence. My principal focus is not on any particular type of expert evidence but on broader questions: the extent to which we ought to rely on rulings of admissibility, the standards that should govern admissibility rulings, and the role of the trial and appellate courts in making those rulings. To some extent, I will concentrate on the context of criminal cases, but for the most part my conclusions apply in both civil and criminal litigation. Here are my conclusions: First, …

Natural Attenuation Of Roadway Runoff In A Vegetated Channel: A Comparison Between A Winter And A Non-Winter Storm Event, Annalisa Gianfrancesco Jan 2003

Natural Attenuation Of Roadway Runoff In A Vegetated Channel: A Comparison Between A Winter And A Non-Winter Storm Event, Annalisa Gianfrancesco

Open Access Master's Theses

A winter and a non-winter storm were sampled to compare the natural attenuation of roadway runoff within a channel. Samples were taken at three sampling locations within the channel during a non-winter and winter storm. Analyzed constituents of the samples include: trace metals, nutrients, hardness, halide, suspended solids, organic compounds and physical parameters. Comparisons of inlet constituent loads for each storm showed a significant increase in constituents in the winter storm. Reduction efficiencies throughout the channel length were calculated and the winter storm was found to have had lower removal rates per length of the swale.

Retrieval, Action And The Representation Of Distance In Cognitive Maps, Davi Vann Bugmann Jan 2003

Retrieval, Action And The Representation Of Distance In Cognitive Maps, Davi Vann Bugmann

School of Psychology Theses

This thesis examines the context effects on retrieval, and the influence of action on the representation of distance in cognitive maps. It is proposed that bias in distance estimation is a function of the contexts of retrieval that trigger the representation of action in memory during evaluation tasks. The proposal is consistent with embodied cognition evidence that suggests that actions are implicitly a part of the representation, and will be naturally extracted as part of the retrieval process. The experimental work presented examines two different contextual cues; the frequency of visitation to landmarks, and the importance of activity performed at …

Public Funding For Theological Training Under The Free Exercise Clause: Pragmatic Implications And Theoretical Questions Posed To The Supreme Court In Locke V. Davey, Katie Axtell Jan 2003

Public Funding For Theological Training Under The Free Exercise Clause: Pragmatic Implications And Theoretical Questions Posed To The Supreme Court In Locke V. Davey, Katie Axtell

Seattle University Law Review

Part II of this Note presents the factual background and procedural history of Davey v. Locke. Part III discusses the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. Section A provides a basic background on the Supreme Court's free exercise jurisprudence. Section B applies the Court's precedent to Davey, and concludes that the Ninth Circuit sidestepped a true "prohibition" analysis. Sections A, B, and C of Part IV discuss the differing neutrality examinations within free exercise, free speech, and establishment jurisprudence, respectively. Section D discusses the overlapping application of neutrality criteria in establishment and free speech funding cases. Section E concludes …

Articles

Based on the experience of the U.S. National Assessment, we propose a program of research and analysis to advance capability for assessment of climate impacts, vulnerabilities, and adaptation options. We identify specific priorities for scientific research on the responses of ecological and socioeconomic systems to climate and other stresses; for improvement in the climatic inputs to impact assessments; and for further development of assessment methods to improve their practical utility to decision-makers. Finally, we propose a new institutional model for assessment, based principally on regional efforts that integrate observations, research, data, applications, and assessment on climate and linked environmental-change issues. …

Further Thoughts On The Role Of Regulatory Purpose Under Article Iii Of The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade: A Tribute To Bob Hudec, Donald H. Regan Jan 2003

Further Thoughts On The Role Of Regulatory Purpose Under Article Iii Of The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade: A Tribute To Bob Hudec, Donald H. Regan

Articles

My topic in this article is the role of regulatory purpose under Article III of the GATT, and I regard Bob [Hudec] as the patron saint of efforts to establish the relevance of purpose. His famous "Requiem for an 'Aims and Effects' Test" may have been called a requiem, but it was reluctant and sceptical. Bob thought dispute settlement tribunals ought to consider the regulator's purpose, and he thought they would do so, whatever they said. As decisions on Article III accumulate, we are in the process of learning that he was right on both counts.
