Combining Science And Reading Materials To Teach Comprehension Strategies, Melena Haskovec Jan 2003

Combining Science And Reading Materials To Teach Comprehension Strategies, Melena Haskovec

Graduate Research Papers

This paper describes a curriculum development project in which science and reading were combined to teach reading comprehension strategies to kindergarten and first grade children. Nonfiction science texts were purchased. The teachers collaboratively created and implemented lesson plans for three science units and one social studies unit. The combined classes met once every six days from January to May.

The children were paired across grade levels to read the texts, participate in the strategy instruction and complete the guided practice activities. Pre and post project measures of first graders' growth in reading comprehension showed that all the first grade students …

An Effectiveness Assessment Of The Quicktionary Reading Pen For Grades 3 Through 6, Barbara K. Waugh Jan 2003

An Effectiveness Assessment Of The Quicktionary Reading Pen For Grades 3 Through 6, Barbara K. Waugh

Graduate Research Papers

Testing of24 students in an Iowa public school in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades was conducted to determine if the Quicktionary Reading Pen improved reading accuracy. This was done using reading scores both with and without the pen and a standard t-test with the presence of the pen being the only variable in the study. The reading pen was found to have a positive effect, most notable with students with a reading accuracy below 90%. The increase was statistically significant at an 80% confidence interval or better. The pen had little effect for initial reading accuracy in excess of …

An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart Jan 2003

An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Thank you. I have been visiting a lot of bookstores since Eating in the Dark came out last year, including a wonderful bookstore, I should mention, which is right here in Richmond called the Fountain Bookstore. People often ask me if I’ve changed my diet as a result of what I learned while researching the book. Mainly, have I stopped eating genetically engineered foods? I always answer that I’m an American, so of course I eat genetically engineered foods because we have no choice in the matter. GM foods are ubiquitous in the processed foods, and they’re not labeled. But …

Regulating Genetically Modified Foods: Is Mandatory Labeling The Right Answer?, Jean Halloran

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

hank you. Consumer Union, which is the organization that I work for, favors labeling genetically engineered food. At the base of our view on this issue is the view that genetically engineered food is different than regular food. I know some of our previous speakers have spoken about how this is all just one big continuum from conventional crops, but when you look at spider- silk goats, which are goats genetically engineered to produce spider silk in their milk that do in fact exist already on a test farm, the ordinary persons sees something different. To the ordinary person, a …

Remarks On Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In The United States, David Hegewood

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

I would like to thank the Richmond Journal of Law & Technology for inviting me this afternoon and for organizing this forum. I’ve never been on Crossfire, and it’s easy to see why Val has, so I probably won’t be quite as entertaining. In fact most of what I wanted to say this afternoon has already been said in one form or another. Val just stole the last one with the Watson and Crick Fiftieth Anniversary. What I want to do is maybe give you more of a sense of perspective and then go over some of the facts.

Lucrative Blue, Jennifer Clare Toups Jan 2003

Lucrative Blue, Jennifer Clare Toups

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Lucrative Blue, a book-length collection of original poetry, explores themes such as questioning prevailing American ideologies, birth/motherhood, and accessing/confronting the inner self. The poems are influenced by Modern and Post Modern conceptions of art and form; Gertrude Stein's concept of the continuous present and Charles Olsen's concept of projective verse are particularly important. The collection attempts to pay close attention to the world surrounding the poems' speakers; the sounds of airplanes, dogs, and the images and sounds of construction frequently appear, as they were frequently present when the poems were created; The collection is divided into three sections; the first …

Intra-Domain Mobility Management, Kapilkumar Narayanan Kulakkunnath Jan 2003

Intra-Domain Mobility Management, Kapilkumar Narayanan Kulakkunnath

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mobility supporting protocols are designed to provide connectivity of mobile nodes from any point of attachment to the Internet. Fast handoff, low signaling overhead and packet loss are the key factors to be addressed in designing a mobility management protocol. This work proposes Intra Domain Mobility Management (IDMM) protocol, based on micro-mobility concept. The protocol implements an efficient tracking mechanism for locating the mobile nodes and ensures that their movements remain transparent to communicating nodes. The protocol is designed with the hierarchical tree topology in mind that allows for low cost solution and efficient management. The optimized routing enables fast …

Effects Of Blood Vessel Permeability On Mechanical Properties Of Bone Under Micro-Gravity Conditions, Robert L Drollinger Jan 2003

Effects Of Blood Vessel Permeability On Mechanical Properties Of Bone Under Micro-Gravity Conditions, Robert L Drollinger

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Loss of bone mass is one important physiological change observed in astronauts after medium and long-term exposure to microgravity conditions. The objective of the current study is to test the hypothesis that loss of bone mass under microgravity can be inhibited if the same micro-force distribution under earth gravity (body weight) is achieved by increasing the blood vessel permeability to increase the transcortical interstitial fluid flow. A method of exposure to bio-frequency spectrum (BFS) light (infrared to micrometer wavelength) was used to increase the blood vessel permeability. We tested the hypothesis by examining the bone mechanical properties (Young's modulus) of …

Native Plants As Sentinels Of Tritium Contamination, Colleen A Grant Jan 2003

Native Plants As Sentinels Of Tritium Contamination, Colleen A Grant

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study assessed the potential of six plant species growing in the Mojave Desert, as sentinels of tritium contamination below earthen caps covering radioactive waste. The plants, grown in hydroponic tanks and 3 m columns, were evaluated for treatments representing three different levels of tritium contamination. Tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, replaces a hydrogen atom in a water molecule and readily migrates through soil. Plant roots coming into contact with soil moisture do not discriminate between tritiated water molecules and dihydrogen water molecules in the uptake process. Plants have the potential to be more effective monitors of radioactive waste-sites …

Evolutionary And Biogeographic Histories In A North American Rodent Family (Heteromyidae), Lois Fay Alexander Jan 2003

Evolutionary And Biogeographic Histories In A North American Rodent Family (Heteromyidae), Lois Fay Alexander

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The family Heteromyidae includes six genera of rodents traditionally placed in three subfamilies endemic to the Nearctic and northern Neotropical biogeographic regions. Although several of these taxa represent intensively studied members of North and Central American ecosystems (e.g., kangaroo rats, pocket mice), phylogenetic relationships within and among subfamilies, genera, and species-groups are poorly understood. Here, I used maximum likelihood (ML), Bayesian, and maximum parsimony (MP) analyses of sequence data from two mitochondrial DNA genes---COIII (699 bp) and cytochrome b (1140 bp)---to investigate phylogenetic relationships among 55 species-level taxa. I found robust support for monophyly of genera Dipodomys, Microdipodops, Chaetodipus, and …

Bilateral Free Trade Agreements And Customs Unions: The Impact Of The Eu Republic Of South Africa Free Trade Agreement On Botswana, Scott Mcdonald, Terrie Walmsley Jan 2003

Bilateral Free Trade Agreements And Customs Unions: The Impact Of The Eu Republic Of South Africa Free Trade Agreement On Botswana, Scott Mcdonald, Terrie Walmsley

GTAP Working Papers Archive

The EU has indicated that after 2008 its trade relationships with developing countries will be dominated by the development of preferential trade agreements. Although not a consequence of the Cotonou Agreement, the free trade agreement between the EU and the Republic of South Africa (EU RSA FTA) is clearly one of the first fruits of this approach to trade relationships. However, there is no evidence that the design of the EU RSA FTA incorporated a comprehensive general equilibrium evaluation of the agreement for either the signatories or the other southern African nations. The analyses reported here indicate that while the …

Simplified Meta-Analysis Of Clinical Trials In Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2003

Simplified Meta-Analysis Of Clinical Trials In Resuscitation, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To present and demonstrate a new simplified method for synthesizing results of multiple clinical trials in resuscitation research. Methods: The mean difference across studies in the proportion of favorable outcomes between experimental and control groups is calculated. This difference is shown to have a t-distribution. Its significance can be ascertained with a simple t-test. The analysis can be implemented in a one-page computer spreadsheet. Results: Simplified meta-analysis provides high sensitivity and can be extended to include weighting of studies according to size or quality, comparison of subgroups of studies, tests for outliers, and calculation of the power of the …

Oecd Domestic Support And The Developing Countries, Betina Dimaranan, Thomas Hertel, Roman Keeney Jan 2003

Oecd Domestic Support And The Developing Countries, Betina Dimaranan, Thomas Hertel, Roman Keeney

GTAP Working Papers Archive

This paper aims to shed light on the potential interests of developing countries in reforms to domestic support for agriculture in the OECD economies. In order to accomplish this goal, we begin by reviewing the literature on the impacts of domestic support on key variables, including farm income, in the OECD economies themselves. We then proceed to revise the standard GTAP model of global trade, based on recent work at the OECD, in order to permit it to better capture these impacts. A series of stylized simulations are subsequently offered to illustrate the differential impacts of alternative types of domestic …

Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: A Comprehensive Evidence Based Review, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2003

Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: A Comprehensive Evidence Based Review, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR includes all steps of standard external CPR with the addition of manual mid-abdominal compressions in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compressions. IAC-CPR can increase blood flow during CPR about two fold compared to standard CPR without IAC, as shown by 6 of 6 studies in computer models and 19 of 20 studies in various animal models. The addition of IAC has clinical benefit in humans, as indicated in 10 of 12 small to medium sized clinical studies. The technique increases the frequency of immediate return of spontaneous circulation for in-hospital resuscitations from roughly 25% to …

Combined Supervised And Unsupervised Learning In Genomic Data Mining, Jack Y. Yang, Okan K. Ersoy Jan 2003

Combined Supervised And Unsupervised Learning In Genomic Data Mining, Jack Y. Yang, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Since the discoveries of Overhauser effects and DNA double helix structure, many protein structures have been determined experimentally, especially by utilizing the Overhauser effects. Biologists are not only able to describe the life phenomena but also to seek the understanding of life mechanisms at molecular level. With the advent of high-throughput genome sequencing technology, more and more genomes are available; consequently our ability to sequence genomes has outstripped our ability to analyze the resulting data in order to determine the functions and structures of proteins encoded in the genomes. Determination of protein structures and functions using traditional laboratory methods is …

Harper & Brothers’ Family And School District Libraries, 1830-1846., Robert S. Freeman Jan 2003

Harper & Brothers’ Family And School District Libraries, 1830-1846., Robert S. Freeman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

In the 1830s, at the dawn of mass-market publishing, J. & J. Harper of New York began publishing several libraries, including Harper’s Family Library and Harper’s School District Library. A “library” in this sense is a series or set of uniformly bound and uniformly priced books issued by the same publisher. A leading publisher and a major force in the broad religious and social reform movements of the period, the Harper brothers helped to shape education in American homes and schools. As Methodists they were advocates of reading for moral improvement. As innovative publishers, they made full use of the …

A Genetic Lesion That Arrests Plasma Cell Homing To The Bone Marrow, Loren D. Erickson, Ling-Li Lin, Biyan Duan, Laurence Morel, Randolph J. Noelle

Dartmouth Scholarship

The coordinated regulation of chemokine responsiveness plays a critical role in the development of humoral immunity. After antigen challenge and B cell activation, the emerging plasma cells (PCs) undergo CXCL12-induced chemotaxis to the bone marrow, where they produce Ab and persist. Here we show that PCs, but not B cells or T cells from lupus-prone NZM mice, are deficient in CXCL12-induced migration. PC unresponsiveness to CXCL12 results in a marked accumulation of PCs in the spleen of mice, and a concordant decrease in bone marrow PCs. Unlike normal mice, in NZM mice, a majority of the splenic PCs are long-lived. …

Continuity And Change In Commerce Clause Jurisprudence, Barry Cushman Jan 2003

Continuity And Change In Commerce Clause Jurisprudence, Barry Cushman

Journal Articles

From the Introduction

In 1994, Richard Friedman made a very useful contribution to the growing body of scholarship on the development of constitutional doctrine during the New Deal era. Though I differed with Friedman on some points of interpretation, I nevertheless found much in the article to admire. Now, eight years later, Friedman has presented us with a more extended discussion of a particular aspect of that constitutional development, namely, the transformation of Commerce Clause doctrine. Here again I see points of agreement. We agree that it is unlikely that the Court Packing Plan played much of a role in …
