Reflecting The Pacific, Wolfgang Welsch Jan 2003

Reflecting The Pacific, Wolfgang Welsch

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

The title of my article has a double meaning: on the one hand, I intend to reflect the Pacific Ocean in the sense of mirroring it; and on the other, of course, also to think about this mirroring, to reflect on it.

On The Polemical Nature Of 2 (Slavonic) Enoch: A Reply To C. Böttrich, Andrei Orlov Jan 2003

On The Polemical Nature Of 2 (Slavonic) Enoch: A Reply To C. Böttrich, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Adam's story occupies a prominent place in 2 Slavonic (Apocalypse of) Enoch. The traditions pertaining to the first human can be found in all the sections of the book. In these materials Adam is depicted as a glorious angelic being, predestined by God to be the ruler of the earth, but falling short of God's expectations. The article argues that the extensive presence of Adamic materials in 2 Enoch has a polemical nature since it is related to the long-lasting competition between Adamic and Enochic traditions. The analysis shows that the polemics taking place in 2 Enoch involve a …

Relation Of Thin And Release Timber Management Practices To Abundance Of Woodrats, Chipmunks, Mice, And Ticks Within The Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, Deborah A. Whitaker

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Forestry practices may indirectly influence the ecological maintenance of zoonotic disease agents by their direct impacts on rodent community structure and the relative abundance of their associated ectoparasites. Relative abundances of three species of forest rodents and their ticks were compared among four types of stands within the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation in northwestern California, (USA). The stands were characterized by age since last harvest and silvicultural treatment. Two stand types were harvested 20 to 25 years prior to sampling while the other two stand types were harvested 35 to 40 years prior to sampling. Additionally, each age category was …

Marbury V. Madison And Modern Judicial Review, Robert F. Nagel Jan 2003

Marbury V. Madison And Modern Judicial Review, Robert F. Nagel

Publications

This Article compares the realist critique of Marbury with several revisionist defenses of that decision. Realists claim to see Marbury as essentially political and thus as the fountainhead of modern judicial review. Revisionists claim to see the decision as legalistically justified and thus inconsistent with current practices. Close examination, however, indicates that, despite sharp rhetorical differences, these two accounts are largely complementary rather than inconsistent. Each envisions Marbury as embodying elements of both political realism and legal formalism. Once the false argument about whether Marbury was either political or legal is put aside, it is possible to trace the influence …

Attempting To Ground Ethnographic Theory And Practice, Lelia Rosalind Green Jan 2003

Attempting To Ground Ethnographic Theory And Practice, Lelia Rosalind Green

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper is a response to continued discussion about the necessary and sufficient characteristics of a claim to 'ethnographic method' when made by researchers in the Media and Cultural Studies traditions. Many of the seminal studies informing-particularly-audience studies research have claimed that they were 'ethnographic'. But is this a variety of ethnographic that an anthropologist would recognise? And if not, what kind of ethnography is it, and why might it be more or less appropriate as a research fromework than straightforward 'interview' or 'focus group' research? Further, when might we say that an interview is conducted in the course of …

Using Multimedia To Develop Students' Programming Concepts, Kacha Chansilp, Ron Oliver Jan 2003

Using Multimedia To Develop Students' Programming Concepts, Kacha Chansilp, Ron Oliver

Research outputs pre 2011

The growing use of computers and computer technology is creating a worldwide need for more programmers and computer professionals. The increasing complexity of programming languages and applications is demanding higher skills sets from the programmers who are being trained. Kann et al. (1997) suggest that the graphic representation of algorithms used in most textbooks are too abstract and insufficient for learners to develop the logical thinking required in computer science courses. Many programming students have problems due to a lack of understanding of conceptual and mental models (Soloway et al., 1981). This paper describes the development of an alternative teaching …

"I Just Wanted It Finished!": The Transitions Of A Novice Project Manager, Barnard Clarkson, Joseph Luca Jan 2003

"I Just Wanted It Finished!": The Transitions Of A Novice Project Manager, Barnard Clarkson, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

How do you identify quality project managers? Is it possible to rate project managers on a scale, and more importantly once their level has been identified, can their skills be improved? These issues are addressed in this case study by observing the development of a research officer as she unwillingly undertook the management of a series of multimedia projects aimed at training and up-skilling tertiary students. The major conclusion from this research are that her skill development can be identified through the use of a four-stage typology derived from the literature on adult learning.

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston Jan 2003

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston

Research outputs pre 2011

The aim of this research was to automate the composition of convincingly “real” music in specific musical genres. By “real” music we mean music which is not obviously “machine generated”, is recognizable as being of the selected genre, is perceived as aesthetically pleasing, and is usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal, various computational techniques were used, including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. Student musicians have objectively assessed the resulting compositions.

Sequence And Distribution Of The Neotyphodium Lolii Peptide Synthetase Gene Ipsa., Prapassorn Damrongkool Jan 2003

Sequence And Distribution Of The Neotyphodium Lolii Peptide Synthetase Gene Ipsa., Prapassorn Damrongkool

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Neotyphodium lolii is a fungal endophyte of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Like related endophytes of other grasses, it increases the grass host's fitness. Endophyte-infected grasses have greater resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, and thus are highly competitive. However, the endophytes also produce toxins that cause toxicoses in grazing animals. N. lolii produces a large amount of lolitrems, which are thought to cause ryegrass staggers in mammals. The fungus also produces a smaller amount of a highly toxic ergopeptine ergovaline. In this dissertation, I have characterized, sequenced and surveyed the distribution of peptide synthetase gene IpsA that is required for …

A Study Of Classic Films And Their Portrayal Of The Mentally Ill., Allison Marie Plants

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The media have an enormous influence on the way the public views mental illness. Their frequent and often flawed portrayals of the mentally ill cause negative feelings to develop. Media framing plays a powerful role in the portrayal of the mentally ill. The way the media portray the mentally ill directly affects how they are viewed in real life.

Apoptosis-Necrosis Paradox: Implications To The Pathogenesis Of Inflammatory Disorders., Djordje Medan Jan 2003

Apoptosis-Necrosis Paradox: Implications To The Pathogenesis Of Inflammatory Disorders., Djordje Medan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The first section of this work addressed the relationship between apoptotic and necrotic cell death and their role in inflammatory lung injury induced by endotoxin. Pulmonary administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into the lung of mice caused a time-dependent increase in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α and inflammatory cell influx in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids. Control mice showed only resident alveolar macrophages with no apoptosis as determined by terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) and histone-bound DNA fragmentation assays. In contrast, LPS-treated mice showed clear apoptosis of BAL cells. Microscopic studies confirmed the presence of apoptotic neutrophils and …

A Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Stereotypical Representations On Television Dramas., Rachel Massanet Jan 2003

A Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Stereotypical Representations On Television Dramas., Rachel Massanet

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The stereotyping of minorities on television and in films has been a prominent practice since the beginning of the media era. Although there has been an increase in the visibility of positive minority characters, the portrayal of some of these characters is still negatively stereotypical. The importance in this research lies in the fact that negative representation can cause viewer’s to make false assumptions about minority cultures, which in turn can negatively impact society. People from homogenous areas are introduced to these images and see them as real. The research in this paper shows that in the television drama world, …

The Effects Of Superimposing The Same Vs. Qualitatively Different Food On Responding Maintained By A Variable-Interval Schedule Of Reinforcement., Jessie-Sue Milo Jan 2003

The Effects Of Superimposing The Same Vs. Qualitatively Different Food On Responding Maintained By A Variable-Interval Schedule Of Reinforcement., Jessie-Sue Milo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the effects of response-independent delivery of same vs. qualitatively different food than the reinforcer on rats' lever pressing. During baselines, a variable-interval schedule delivered either pellets or milk. A fixed-time schedule then was superimposed which delivered either response-independent pellets or milk. The order of reinforcer and responseindependent food presentation was counterbalanced across subjects, such that in four different conditions each rat was exposed to each combination of reinforcer and response-independent food presentations. Similarity of the response-independent food to the reinforcer did not differentially disrupt response rates. Response-independent milk decreased response rates more than response-independent pellets. Postreinforcement pausing …

A Study Of The Security Implications Involved With The Use Of Executable World Wide Web Content, Christopher Hu Jan 2003

A Study Of The Security Implications Involved With The Use Of Executable World Wide Web Content, Christopher Hu

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Malicious executable code is nothing new. While many consider that the concept of malicious code began in the 1980s when the first PC viruses began to emerge, the concept does in fact date back even earlier. Throughout the history of malicious code, methods of hostile code delivery have mirrored prevailing patterns of code distribution. In the 1980s, file infecting and boot sector viruses were common, mirroring the fact that during this time, executable code was commonly transferred via floppy disks. Since the 1990s email has been a major vector for malicious code attacks. Again, this mirrors the fact that during …

On Being-In-Community : A Phenomenological Explication Of The Experience Of Being-In-Community : In The Context Of The Community Building Workshop Tm And Business, Carl Holroyd Jan 2003

On Being-In-Community : A Phenomenological Explication Of The Experience Of Being-In-Community : In The Context Of The Community Building Workshop Tm And Business, Carl Holroyd

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A call for business to introduce a humanistic workplace ethos within a supportive work community resounds throughout the western world. Scott Peck's model of community building workshops is explored as a tool for creating a business ethos centred-on human flourishing which embraces the principles of socially responsible community. The CBW provides a concrete experience of a psychological and physiological sense of deep-community. In -Peck's vernacular, this is termed as being in-community. In my research the experience of being-in-community is explicated via phenomenological analysis, which allows some of the eidetic structures of the phenomenon to come to light. The experience is …

Children's Attitudes To A Hospital Familiarisation Programme, Lis Mathiasen Jan 2003

Children's Attitudes To A Hospital Familiarisation Programme, Lis Mathiasen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Many young children are admitted to the emergency departments of our childrens hospitals without the opportunity to receive any preparation in terms of what to expect and what to do or not to do (Health Department of W A, 2000). Surrounded by strange people, environment, smells, sounds and medical equipment, and confronted with possibly painful and invasive procedures, many young children become stressed and anxious. Negative psychological effects may have immediate and/or long lasting psychological consequences (Zuckerberg, 1994; 0 Byrne, Peterson & Saldana, 1997). It is important to protect young childrens rights and to minimise upset and trauma whenever possible. …

Social learning theory provided the theoretical basis for this research. The underlying premise is that …

Toward A Scientific Approach To Significance Assessments Of Prehistoric Achaeological Properties At Mount Rainier National Park, Nicholas James Smith Jan 2003

Toward A Scientific Approach To Significance Assessments Of Prehistoric Achaeological Properties At Mount Rainier National Park, Nicholas James Smith

All Master's Theses

Managing prehistoric archaeological properties at Mount Rainier National Park (MORA) is challenging. The prehistoric archaeological record is not well known, a myriad of geomorphologic processes are at work from minute to catastrophic, and until recently, archaeologists largely ignored stratovolcanoes in the Pacific Northwest. They, therefore, lack the local and regional contexts to evaluate many kinds of prehistoric archaeological properties at MORA in terms of their data potential.

Once thought to be of scarce data potential (cf. Boxberger 1998; Burtchard 1998; Daugherty 1963; Grabert and Pint 1978; Mierendorf et al. 1998; Smith 1964a; Zweifel and Reid 1991), the montane environments of …
