Pervasive Developmental Disorders. Etiological, Diagnostic And Treatment Conundrum, Naseem A. Qureshi, Yasser S. Al-Ghamdy, Tariq A. Al-Habeeb
Neurosciences
Pervasive developmental disorders are severe childhood psychiatric disorders that afflict millions of children worldwide. Despite availability of tremendous data on these disorders, there is a paucity of information among clinicians including mental health professionals. Pervasive developmental disorders, caused by multiple neurobiological and environmental etiologies, are characterized mainly by impaired social interactions, impaired communication and language, and abnormal repetitive interests and behaviors. A clear understanding of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of pervasive developmental disorders requires routine developmental surveillance, extensive clinical diagnostic workup and laboratory investigations. The children with pervasive developmental disorders need a multimodal treatment approach. In Arabian Gulf countries, research …

The Generation Of Forms And Thai Typeface Design, Pornprapha Phatanateacha
Theses and Dissertations
Changes in culture, design, fashion and lifestyle are very common for a developing country such as Thailand. Losing the identity and significant quality of Thai culture is the biggest concern in this rapid movement in Thai society. The biggest challenge is to preserve the existing culture within the development in the society. These problems within the rapid change not only affect Thai lifestyle and fashion but also Thai graphic design. There is a trend in poster design, advertising, and packaging to follow Western design. That influence suggests that Thai design follow a Western model in order to be as successful. …
Identifying Complex Issues Surrounding The Construction Of Indigeneity In Film And Documentary, Debbie Carmody
Identifying Complex Issues Surrounding The Construction Of Indigeneity In Film And Documentary, Debbie Carmody
Theses : Honours
Indigenous identity can only be located within . a framework of historical dislocation from where white notions of assimilation are shattered. Therefore Indigeneity can only be defined in relation to the black experience within colonialism's hegemonic structures. I will argue this by looking at constructions of Indigenous Australians in the feature film Radiance (1998) directed by Rachel Perkins, and the documentary Sissy (2000) directed by Debbie Carmody (previously known as Debbie Gittins), which was made as part of this thesis. This raises questions: What is the black experience and the process of black survival within colonialism's hegemonic structures? How does …
Bioavailability Of The Tea Flavonoids Epicatechin And Epicatechin Gallate: Role Of Membrane Transport And Metabolism, Jaya Bharathi Vaidyanathan
Bioavailability Of The Tea Flavonoids Epicatechin And Epicatechin Gallate: Role Of Membrane Transport And Metabolism, Jaya Bharathi Vaidyanathan
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Tea flavonoids, including (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) have been shown to have chemopreventive activity in cancer. Studies in animals and humans suggest that these dietary compounds have a very low oral bioavailability. However, the reason behind this limited bioavailability as well as the mechanisms underlying absorption is not clearly understood. The overall hypothesis of this dissertation project is that the human intestinal absorption of (-)-epicatechin (EC) and its gallate, (-)epicatechin- 3-gallate (ECG) is limited and regulated both by multiple transport mechanisms and metabolism. We used the Caco-2 cell monolayers, a well-established model to …

Impact Of High School Preparation On College Oral Communication Apprehension, Karen Kangas Dwyer, Robert E. Carlson, Jennifer Dalbey
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study examines the impact of high school public speaking skills training and public speaking experiences on college overall communication apprehension (CA) and public speaking context CA. The results show that public speaking skill-training in high school is significantly related to lower CA levels or students upon entering a college-level basic speech course. In addition, students who report more public speaking experiences both in high school setting and outside the high school setting, tend to report lower overall CA and lower CA in the public speaking context.

Effect Of Organic Matter Addition To The Pen Surface On Feedlot Nitrogen Balance, Julie Adams, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Casey Macken, Casey Wilson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Two experiments, calves fed November to May (WINTER) and yearlings fed May to September (SUMMER), were conducted to evaluate effects of replacing dry-rolled corn with 30% corn bran or applying sawdust to the pen surface on feedlot nitrogen balance. Bran increased feed conversion during both experiments but reduced nitrogen losses in the WINTER. Sawdust application to the feedlot pen surface reduced nitrogen losses during the WINTER. Bran and sawdust treatments increased nitrogen recovered in manure during the WINTER. Adding OM to the pen surface did not impact nitrogen losses during the SUMMER.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Twenty-one muscles from beef and dairy cow carcasses were analyzed for objective color, shear force, pH, expressible moisture, total collagen, total heme-iron and proximate composition. Results of this analysis showed large variation in processing traits from muscle to muscle. Muscle traits were most often influenced by fat thickness in both beef and dairy carcasses. These results will aid in selecting muscles that are well suited for enhancement.

Estimating Rumen Undegradable Protein In, Heather Haugen, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Mark Ullerich, Casey Macken, Kimberly Whittet, Tim Loy
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
An in situ trial was conducted to compare estimates of rumen undegradable protein (UIP) using a single incubation time point and rates of degradation. Four forage samples (three legumes and one grass) were incubated in situ for their mean retention time estimated from in vitro dry matter disappearance plus a 10-hour lag time as well as for a time point equal to 75% of the total mean retention time (mean retention time plus lag). The UIP values obtained from the fractional rates of degradation and passage were more highly correlated with those estimated from 75% of the total mean retention …

Comparison Of Two Heifer Development Systems On A Commercial Nebraska Ranch, Tim Loy, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Dillon Feuz, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Burke Teichert
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A trial was conducted at a commercial Nebraska ranch to evaluate the effectiveness of a bred heifer development program that minimized the use of harvested feed. Two management systems were imposed on 505 March-calving bred heifers during the winter before the calving season, one including the use of hay (CON), and one relying solely on winter range and supplementation (TRT). During the winter period, heifers in the TRT system lost less condition and had similar weight gains to CON. Two-year-old pregnancy rates did not differ between systems. A partial budget analysis of the two development programs indicated that the TRT …
Effects Of Corn Processing Method And Crude Protein Level With The Inclusion Of Wet Corn Gluten Feed On Finishing Steer Performance, Casey Macken, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock, Stephanie Jaeger
Effects Of Corn Processing Method And Crude Protein Level With The Inclusion Of Wet Corn Gluten Feed On Finishing Steer Performance, Casey Macken, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock, Stephanie Jaeger
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Three hundred twenty crossbred steer calves were used to evaluate corn processing method and crude protein level in finishing diets that included wet corn gluten feed. There was no response due to crude protein level (14 vs 15%) observed in this trial. As corn processing method became more intensive (fine-grinding, high-moisture ensiling, and steam-flaking corn) compared to dry-rolling, daily intake was reduced. Daily gain was similar across corn processing methods. Feed efficiency and cost of gain improved as corn processing method intensity increased.

Feeding Transgenic (Bt Corn Rootworm Protected And Roundup-Ready®) Corn To Feedlot Cattle, Kyle Vander Pol, Jon Simon, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Edward Stanisiewski, Gary Hartnell
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Two finishing trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding corn root worm protected (Bt) and Roundup Ready® (RR) corn hybrids on animal performance and carcass characteristics in the feedlot. Two commercially available non-genetically engineered reference hybrids, and the nontransgenic control hybrid were compared to the two genetically enhanced hybrids. No significant differences were observed on animal performance or carcass characteristics for either trial as a result of corn source in feed.
The Law Is Straight And Narrow, How American Courts Define Families, Elisa Laird
The Law Is Straight And Narrow, How American Courts Define Families, Elisa Laird
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that American law is inherently biased toward traditional heterosexual family structures, creating significant barriers for same-sex couples and non-traditional families seeking legal recognition and rights. The legal system's "straight and narrow" framework often excludes these families from accessing benefits and protections granted to heterosexual families, reflecting deeply entrenched religious and historical influences.

Augusto Boal's Theatre Of The Oppressed In The Public Speaking And Interpersonal Communication Classrooms, Jacqueline D. Burleson
Augusto Boal's Theatre Of The Oppressed In The Public Speaking And Interpersonal Communication Classrooms, Jacqueline D. Burleson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this study, I document and analyze how I applied Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) techniques in introductory Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication (IPC) courses. In the first chapter, Boal's democratic praxis is discussed in terms of critical performance pedagogy and Brecht's social aesthetics. I identify the qualitative social scientific method of data collection and analysis I used and base the significance of the study in my testing of TO in non-performance educational contexts and in the integrated communication studies curricula that resulted. In Chapter Two, I summarize Boal's career as an interactive theatre practitioner. My review includes synopses …
Rainfall-Runoff Control: Variably Saturated Transport For An Infiltration System Controlling Water Quality And Quantity, Zheng Teng
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Rainfall-runoff impacted by anthropogenic activities transports significant quantities of particulate, aqueous and complexed constituents. These diffuse, unsteady and stochastic event-based loadings are unique challenges for water quality and quantity control. The design, water quality and quantity functions of a partial exfiltration reactor (PER) utilizing Fe-coated-sand and porous pavement (CPP) is examined specifically across three representative rainfall-runoff events. Total concentrations and mass for metals (Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd), suspended solids, and Chemical oxygen demand were reduced significantly. Rainfall-runoff volume and peak flow were reduced and time to peak was extended. Influent dm/dp ratios based on particle analyses suggest that the …
The Novelty Of Improvisation: Towards A Genre Of Embodied Spontaneity, David Alfred Charles
The Novelty Of Improvisation: Towards A Genre Of Embodied Spontaneity, David Alfred Charles
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Improvisation has often been viewed and valued in terms of its service and resemblance to scripted traditions of theatre. Such a stance seriously undermines the significance and impact of this global performance modality, and has resulted in improvisatory modes being largely ignored or downplayed in modern historical accounts of theatre. This dissertation examines improvisation on its own terms, seeking to understand its unique features, functions and potentials, while freeing it from the heavy shadow of its scripted counterpart. To this end, the theories of literary critic, Mikhail Bakhtin, provide important methodological guideposts and allow the silhouette of the improvisational impetus …
