Spc For Quality And Risk: Monitoring Processes With Cross-Sectional And Serial Interdependence, And Higher Moments, Xia Pan Jan 2003

Spc For Quality And Risk: Monitoring Processes With Cross-Sectional And Serial Interdependence, And Higher Moments, Xia Pan

Open Access Dissertations

This study attempts to improve the statistical process control (SPC) methods for quality control and improvement and introduce SPC methods into risk control. With systematic viewpoints, the quality and risk control in business organizations is an issue of the control of cross-sectional and serial interdependent processes. Quality and risk are also determined by not only the first and second moments but also the higher moments of the probabilistic process. Several contributions were made in this study. A correct bias correction coefficient with unequal sample sizes for Shewhart chart was given. The concordance of Shewhart mean and variability pair charts was …

Thyroidal Regulation Of Stomach Development And Toxicity Of Pcb 126 In Metamorphosing Summer Flounder, Bruno Soffientino Jan 2003

Thyroidal Regulation Of Stomach Development And Toxicity Of Pcb 126 In Metamorphosing Summer Flounder, Bruno Soffientino

Open Access Dissertations

The overarching theme of this thesis work is the development of the stomach in summer flounder, which occurs during metamorphosis. During normal development, proliferation of the gastric epithelium increases in early metamorphosis when incipient gastric glands first appear, and declines at late metamorphosis when gastric glands are completely developed. Inhibiting thyroid hormone prevents the increase in proliferation and the differentiation of glands, while high levels of thyroid hormone accelerate gastric gland differentiation but also inhibit proliferation. The hormone is necessary to cause cell proliferation, but at high doses it appears to selectively stimulate differentiation, suggesting that the steady increase in …

Seasons Of Resistance: Sustainable Agriculture And Food Security In Cuba, Carmen G. Gonzalez Jan 2003

Seasons Of Resistance: Sustainable Agriculture And Food Security In Cuba, Carmen G. Gonzalez

Faculty Articles

Beginning in the mid-1990s, Cuba embarked upon a transformation of the agricultural sector that has been hailed by some observers as a model of socially equitable and ecologically sustainable agriculture. Cuba shifted from an export-oriented, chemical-intensive agricultural development strategy to one that promoted organic agriculture and encouraged production for the domestic market. This article places Cuba's agricultural reforms in historical context by examining the evolution of Cuban agriculture from the colonial period until the present through the lens of food security and ecological sustainability. The article argues that Cuba, for most of its history, was food insecure and ecologically compromised …

Trade Sanctions And Human Rights–Past, Present, And Future, Carlos Manuel Vázquez Jan 2003

Trade Sanctions And Human Rights–Past, Present, And Future, Carlos Manuel Vázquez

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The relationship between the international law of trade and the international law of human rights has commanded an increasing amount of scholarly attention in the past few years, perhaps spurred by the well-known events at Seattle in 1999. This article offers some reflections on this relationship, focusing on the permissibility under international law of imposing trade sanctions against nations that commit violations of international human rights. Part I begins with some reflections on the historical relationship between these two bodies of law. Part I also considers why the human rights community appears to feel threatened by the international trade system, …

A Crisis Of Caring: A Catholic Critique Of American Welfare Reform, Vincent D. Rougeau Jan 2003

A Crisis Of Caring: A Catholic Critique Of American Welfare Reform, Vincent D. Rougeau

Journal Articles

The current deterioration of the American economy is bringing new attention to the problem of poverty in the United States. After falling over the last few years, the number of Americans living in poverty has begun to rise once again. Notwithstanding the achievements of recent "welfare reforms," the American poor continue to be numerous by any measure.

Unfortunately, decades of affluence have exacerbated American tendencies to view liberal concepts such as freedom, autonomy, tolerance, and choice in ways that accentuate personal autonomy over community integration. These liberal values have been increasingly unhinged from strong countervailing principles like duty and responsibility, …

Setting The Pace: Model Inclusive Child Care Centers Serving Families Of Children With Emotional Or Behavioral Challenges, Eileen M. Brennan, Jennifer R. Bradley, Shane Ama, Natalie Diane Cawood

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Approximately 10% of American children experience an emotional or behavioral disorder that causes some level of impairment in their development, learning, or functioning in daily life, and the numbers of those affected appear to be growing (U.S. Public Health Service, 2000). With the entry of many family caregivers into the workforce, increasing numbers of children with these challenges are enrolling in child care settings that offer services to infants, toddlers, young children, or school aged youth (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000). Child care settings can provide a unique opportunity to address the needs of children with emotional or behavioral challenges and …

High Frequency Pure Tone Audiometry And High Frequency Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions: A Correlational Analysis, Kimberly J. Lavoie Jan 2003

High Frequency Pure Tone Audiometry And High Frequency Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions: A Correlational Analysis, Kimberly J. Lavoie

Dissertations and Theses

Previous studies show that pure tone thresholds are strongly correlated with distortion product otoacoustic emission amplitudes when evaluating the frequency range from 1 to 8 kHz (Avan & Bonfils, 1993). Little is known about correlations between these two measures at higher frequencies from 9-16 kHz. This study compared pure tone thresholds and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in this high frequency range for 29 normal hearing subjects ages 18-30. Pure tone thresholds were obtained at 250-16 kHz and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) 2,211-17,675 were measured in the same ears. DPOAE amplitudes were measured using a constant F1/F2 ratio of …

Assessment Of Potential Environmental Impacts Of Nature-Based Tours Originating Within Clark County, Nevada, Beth Domowicz Jan 2003

Assessment Of Potential Environmental Impacts Of Nature-Based Tours Originating Within Clark County, Nevada, Beth Domowicz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this thesis was to assess the potential magnitude of negative environmental damage of nature-based tours originating in Clark County, Nevada. An ordinal ranking system was used for assessment of five variables. These variables were resource use, noise pollution, soil degradation, vegetation degradation, and wildlife disturbance. There were two proposed answers. The first was that as distance increased, negative tour impact would increase. This was not supported, since tours had high impacts for destinations that were close by and far away. The second was that most tours were not causing high damage to the environment. This hypothesis was …

When Terrorism Threatens Health: How Far Are Limitations On Personal And Ecomonic Liberties Justified, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2003

When Terrorism Threatens Health: How Far Are Limitations On Personal And Ecomonic Liberties Justified, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The government is engaged in a homeland-security project to safeguard the population's health from potential terrorist attacks. This project is politically charged because it affords the state enhanced powers to restrict personal and economic liberties. Just as governmental powers relating to intelligence, law enforcement, and criminal justice curtail individual interests, so too do public health powers.

Computer Aided Dispatch Technology: A Study Of The Evolution And Expectations Of Cad And A Comparative Survey Of Cad In The U. S. Fire Service And The Clark County Fire Department., Kenneth E. Morgan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Dispatchers are the first link to assistance in the event of an emergency. Dispatchers must remain calm and gather information from terrified individuals, sort and extract the pertinent information, then relay that information to the responders. Effective dispatching is one of the most important functions of any public service agency (Christen 1991). This paper takes a look at the history and development of Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD). It will explain the various components of a fully functional state of the art CAD system and how each component affects the efficiency of emergency operations. Has computer aided dispatching made an impact …

A New Model For The Assessment Of Nonpoint Source Pollution Using Gis And Virtual Intelligence., Seyed Razi Gaskari Jan 2003

A New Model For The Assessment Of Nonpoint Source Pollution Using Gis And Virtual Intelligence., Seyed Razi Gaskari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Today, nonpoint source (NPS) pollution remains as the leading cause of water quality problems in the United States (USEPA, 1996). The most common NPS pollutants are sediment (i.e. total suspended solids, TSS) and nutrients (i.e. total nitrogen, TN). These wash into water bodies from agricultural land, construction sites, and other areas of disturbance. To develop the virtual non-point source assessment system (VNPSAS) model, monitoring gauges were selected for data extraction from West Virginia and also the western part of Virginia. A geographic information system (GIS) was used as a productive environment for data extraction and spatial analysis. The information for …

The Toxic Mold Terrifying Texas: Mold's Hold On The Insurance Industry., Sylvia Pena-Alfaro Jan 2003

The Toxic Mold Terrifying Texas: Mold's Hold On The Insurance Industry., Sylvia Pena-Alfaro

St. Mary's Law Journal

It is imperative that more scientific research concerning the effects of mold be conducted to better understand the consequences of long-term exposure to mold. Because of home and building modifications to conserve energy, mold has been able to thrive. Reports of illnesses allegedly caused by mold exposure have increased. No scientific evidence, however, exists that conclusively links the illnesses to the effects of mold. Only a limited number of scientific studies exist showing just how harmful toxic mold can be, but there is disagreement as to whether the harmful effects of toxic mold can compromise the immune system to such …

Absolute And Perfect Candor To Clients The Second Annual Symposium On Legal Malpractice & Professional Responsibility., Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2003

Absolute And Perfect Candor To Clients The Second Annual Symposium On Legal Malpractice & Professional Responsibility., Vincent R. Johnson

St. Mary's Law Journal

The fiduciary duty owed to clients by attorneys is defined by the reasonable-care standard of negligence as opposed to the all-encompassing “absolute and perfect candor” rhetoric frequently used to describe the duty owed. Words have meanings and, though the use of “absolute and perfect candor” serves a beneficial purpose, reminding attorneys of the special duty owed to their clients, the fiduciary duty owed to clients is not so all encompassing and impractical. Modern case law fails to establish that a broadly applicable duty of “absolute and perfect” candor applies to the attorney-client relationship, except in a limited number of situations. …
