Review Of John Muir: My Life With Nature, Rob Andrejewski Nov 2003

Review Of John Muir: My Life With Nature, Rob Andrejewski

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

More than 100 years ago, John Muir began speaking in defense of wilderness, captivating audiences with his unconventional style and complete absorption in the wonder and joy of the land. Though Muir spoke esoterically about transcendent "spirit beams" and the beauty of Yosemite's "range of light," his sincerity and emotion shook something deep within the national consciousness. His books and speaking tours energized the wilderness movement, invigorating supporters of the natural preservation system that would help define the country. Never before or since has the United States, possibly the world, had such a charismatic and enthusiastic champion of the wild …

Djungarian Hamsters Exhibit Temperature-Dependent Dietary Fat Choice In Long Days, Sara Hiebert Burch, Kelley Carl Hauser , '99, Abbas Ebrahim , '00 Nov 2003

Djungarian Hamsters Exhibit Temperature-Dependent Dietary Fat Choice In Long Days, Sara Hiebert Burch, Kelley Carl Hauser , '99, Abbas Ebrahim , '00

Biology Faculty Works

Previous studies have shown that whole-animal thermal responses of ectotherms and heterotherms (e.g., hibernators), both of which experience a wide range of body temperatures, are related to the saturation level of somatic lipids, which in turn can be influenced by the ratio of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in the diet. This study demonstrates that Djungarian hamsters held in long days display ambient temperature dependent choice of dietary fats, increasing their preference for saturated fats when ambient temperature increases ( to 27 degreesC) and later reversing this preference when ambient temperature is returned to its original value ( 8 degreesC). …

Its main purpose is to give an overview of the conditions prevailing in the region, regarding those activities leading to the systematic process of adoption and use of renewable energy technology, as part of the energy supply mix in each individual country. This essay was elaborated on the basis of a limited literature survey, information provided to the author by colleagues from several countries in the region of study, plus the knowledge gained by the author from his work on some of these countries, concerning …

Understanding And Confronting Species Uncertainty In Biology And Conservation, Jody Hey, Robin Waples, Michael L. Arnold, Roger K. Butlin, Richard G. Harrison Nov 2003

Understanding And Confronting Species Uncertainty In Biology And Conservation, Jody Hey, Robin Waples, Michael L. Arnold, Roger K. Butlin, Richard G. Harrison

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recent essays on the species problem have emphasized the commonality that many species concepts have with basic evolutionary theory. Although true, such consensus fails to address the nature of the ambiguity that is associated with species-related research. We argue that biologists who endure the species problem can benefit from a synthesis in which individual taxonomic species are used as hypotheses of evolutionary entities. We discuss two sources of species uncertainty: one that is a semantic confusion, and a second that is caused by the inherent uncertainty of evolutionary entities. The former can be dispelled with careful communication, whereas the latter …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 6 - Assessment Of The Nutritional Variability Of Lupins As An Aquaculture Feed Ingredient, Brett Glencross, John Curnow, Wayne Hawkins

Fisheries Research Reports

The nutritional value of the kernel meals of three species of lupin (Lupinus albus, L. angustifolius and L. luteus) was compared against each other and a reference ingredient of solvent extracted soybean meal, when fed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Each lupin kernel meal was included in test diets at 300 g/kg and also at a greater level, representing 50% of the total protein content in the diet. The digestibility of protein of all lupin kernel meals was better than for the soybean meal. The highest protein digestibility was that from L. luteus kernel meal at 30% inclusion (100%), which …

Sorption Of Phosphorus By Soils : How It Is Measured In Western Australia, Michael D A Bolland, D G. Allen, N J. Barrow

Bulletins 4000 -

Most soils used for agriculture in Western Australia had insufficient indigenous native phosphorus P for the introduced agricultural plant species used in the region so fertiliser P had to be applied. This bulletin covers how water-soluble P WSP fertilisers are made, and how the P in the fertilisers dissolves and reacts with soil in the year of application and in the years after application, how soils sorb P and procedures and soil tests used to estimate the capacity of soils to sorb P.

Reforming Elementary Science Teacher Preparation: What About Extant Teaching Beliefs?, Julie A. Thomas, Jon E. Pedersen Nov 2003

Reforming Elementary Science Teacher Preparation: What About Extant Teaching Beliefs?, Julie A. Thomas, Jon E. Pedersen

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

A common maxim in the educational profession is that one teaches the way one is taught. Indications are that preservice teachers' beliefs, attitudes, and practices may be linked to previous experiences. Calderhead and Robson (1991) underscored this concern by asserting that teachers use good teachers as models for developing their own images as teachers. Others have argued that the images held by teachers are used as frames of reference for their own teaching practices. In this article, preservice teachers' perceptions of themselves as science teachers are examined. The assertion is made that a long history of stereotypical science learning experiences—in …

Using Cesium 137 To Understand Recent In Cave Sedimentation In The Tongass National Forest, Southeast Alaska, William Curry Nov 2003

Using Cesium 137 To Understand Recent In Cave Sedimentation In The Tongass National Forest, Southeast Alaska, William Curry

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Removal of vegetation and subsequent erosion in karst regions such as central Kentucky or southeastern Alaska often leads to increased sedimentation in karst features such as caves and dolines. This sedimentation can impact the ground water by altering flow paths and the bio-geochemistry of the karst aquifer itself. Various methodologies have been used to obtain quantitative erosion and sedimentation rates for surface areas in karst and non-karst settings, but few quantitative studies have taken place in caves. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of timber harvesting and development upon the caves and karst of southeastern Alaska …

Methods For Estimating Long-Distance Dispersal, Ran Nathan, Gad Perry, James T. Cronin, Allan E. Strand, Michael L. Cain Nov 2003

Methods For Estimating Long-Distance Dispersal, Ran Nathan, Gad Perry, James T. Cronin, Allan E. Strand, Michael L. Cain

Faculty Publications

Long-distance dispersal (LDD) includes events in which propagules arrive, but do not necessarily establish, at a site far removed from their origin. Although important in a variety of ecological contexts, the system-specific nature of LDD makes "far removed" difficult to quantify, partly, but not exclusively, because of inherent uncertainty typically involved with the highly stochastic LDD processes. We critically review the main methods employed in studies of dispersal, in order to facilitate the evaluation of their pertinence to specific aspects of LDD research. Using a novel classification framework, we identify six main methodological groups: biogeographical; Eulerian and Lagrangian movement/redistributional; short-term …

Converting Plant Biomass To Fuels And Commodity Chemicals In South Africa: A Third Chapter?, L R. Lynd, H H Von Blottnitz, B Tait, J De Boer, I S. Pretorius, K Rumbold, W H. Van Zyl Nov 2003

Converting Plant Biomass To Fuels And Commodity Chemicals In South Africa: A Third Chapter?, L R. Lynd, H H Von Blottnitz, B Tait, J De Boer, I S. Pretorius, K Rumbold, W H. Van Zyl

Dartmouth Scholarship

There have been two distinct chapters in the history of converting cellulosic biomass to fuels and commodity chemicals in South Africa. The first chapter, fromthe late 1970s to the early 1990s, involved some of the most active research and development efforts of their kind anywhere in the world. Thereafter, during the second chapter, there has been very little activity in the field in South Africa while there has been an unprecedented awakening to the potential of biomass conversion elsewhere. This paper considers the rationale and possible benefits of a potential third chapter based on a revitalized effort on biomass conversion …

An Analysis Of Single Clutch Paternity In The Burrower Bug Sehirus Cinctus Using Microsatellites, Jeremy M. Brown, Aneil F. Agrawal, Edmund D. Brodie Nov 2003

An Analysis Of Single Clutch Paternity In The Burrower Bug Sehirus Cinctus Using Microsatellites, Jeremy M. Brown, Aneil F. Agrawal, Edmund D. Brodie

Faculty Publications

Recent studies of the burrower bug, Sehirus cinctus, have examined the genetic basis of parental care. An understanding of the burrower bug mating system, and the subsequent pattern of offspring relatedness that this system generates, is critical to further interpret genetic data. To this end, we developed three consistently amplifiable highly polymorphic microsatellite loci and used them to determine genotypic patterns at the level of both the population and the single clutch. We found that all clutches were sired by single males. Further, we find no evidence for inbreeding. We hypothesize that single paternity within a clutch may play an …

Pelvic Sexual Dimorphism In A Metatherian, Didelphis Virginiana: Implications For Eutherians, Robert G. Tague Nov 2003

Pelvic Sexual Dimorphism In A Metatherian, Didelphis Virginiana: Implications For Eutherians, Robert G. Tague

Faculty Publications

Eutherians give birth to relatively large infants. Females have larger pelves than males, though males typically have larger nonpelvic bones. Pelvic dimorphism is an adaptation for parturition. Metatherian females, who give birth to markedly small infants, should not show pelvic adaptations for parturition and should have smaller pelves than males. Adult females and males of the Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginiana, are compared. Males are significantly larger than females in absolute size for 14 of 16 pelvic and 8 nonpelvic measures. Sexes did not differ significantly for lower iliac length and posterior space of midplane. However, relative lengths for females are …

Deconstructing Arguments From The Case Against Hypothesis Testing, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky Nov 2003

Deconstructing Arguments From The Case Against Hypothesis Testing, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The main purpose of this article is to contest the propositions that (1) hypothesis tests should be abandoned in favor of confidence intervals, and (2) science has not benefited from hypothesis testing. The minor purpose is to propose (1) descriptive statistics, graphics, and effect sizes do not obviate the need for hypothesis testing, (2) significance testing (reporting p values and leaving it to the reader to determine significance) is subjective and outside the realm of the scientific method, and (3) Bayesian and qualitative methods should be used for Bayesian and qualitative research studies, respectively.
