Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, David Baltensperger, Pat Reece, Ivan Rush Jan 2003

Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, David Baltensperger, Pat Reece, Ivan Rush

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Precipitation can be below average for much of the Nebraska Panhandle and adjoining areas for prolonged periods. Prolonged drought results in an inadequate supply of forage for hundreds of thousands of beef cattle on millions of acres of rangeland. While some variation occurs among ranches and among pastures within a given ranch, all rangeland vegetation in arid environments like western Nebraska can be moderately to severely damaged by drought stress and/or excessive grazing. Consequently, even if soil moisture is not limited in the years following a drought, spring growth rate will be reduced and total annual forage production can be …

Michael Meagher Publications

A recombinant heavy chain fragment C of botulinum neurotoxin serotype F (BoNTF(Hc)) has been expressed in Pichia pastoris for use as an antigen in a proposed human vaccine. P. pastoris cells were grown using glycerol batch, glycerol fed-batch, and methanol fedbatch methods to achieve high cell densities. The total cellular protein recovered after homogenization was 72 mg/g of cell paste. BoNTF(Hc) was purified from soluble Pichia cell lysate employing ion-exchange chromatographic (IEC) and hydrophobic interaction chromatographic (HIC) methods developed at the bench scale using 10–100mL columns. The process was performed at the pilot scale using 1–4 L columns for evaluation …

Appraisal Processes In Emotion, Phoebe C. Ellsworth, Klaus R. Scherer Jan 2003

Appraisal Processes In Emotion, Phoebe C. Ellsworth, Klaus R. Scherer

Book Chapters

Usually, people's emotions arise from their perceptions of their circumstances-immediate, imagined, or remembered. This idea has been implicit in many philosophical treatments of emotions (e.g., in Aristotle, Spinoza, and even Descartes and James; see Ellsworth 1994a; Gardiner, Clark-Metcalf, & Beebe-Centa, 1980; Scherer, 2000) and explicit in some (e.g., Hume and Hobbes), and it is the central emphasis of current appraisal theories of emotion. Thinking and feeling are inextricably interrelated most of the time: Certain ways of interpreting one's environment are inherently emotional, few thoughts are entirely free of feelings, and emotions influence thinking. Reason and passion are not independent domains, …

The Foldings Of A Square To Convex Polyhedra, Rebecca Alexander, Heather Dyson, Joseph O'Rourke Jan 2003

The Foldings Of A Square To Convex Polyhedra, Rebecca Alexander, Heather Dyson, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The structure of the set of all convex polyhedra foldable from a square is detailed. It is proved that five combinatorially distinct nondegenerate polyhedra, and four different flat polyhedra, are realizable. All the polyhedra are continuously deformable into each other, with the space of polyhedra having the topology of four connected rings.

Reaching Through The Genome, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2003

Reaching Through The Genome, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Book Chapters

The past two decades have been a period of rapid evolution in the science of biotechnology and therefore in patent strategies, if not in patent law itself. Patent law takes a long time to catch up with science, and commentators take a long time to catch up with the law, but patent lawyers don’t have that luxury. They have to keep ahead of the game, figuring out claiming strategies that allow their clients to capture the value of future discoveries. I want to discuss some of these strategies today.

Un/Braiding Stories About Law, Sexuality And Morality, Margaret E. Montoya Jan 2003

Un/Braiding Stories About Law, Sexuality And Morality, Margaret E. Montoya

Faculty Scholarship

Traditional doctrine insists that we tame sexual desire by pretending that goodness and Godliness is defined by celibacy and abstinence, but the Church is simply wrong to insist that we accept a theology that negates and silences and suppresses a central part of our lives. To the extent that we believe in a life after death, many of us have won a chance at Heaven not by denying and suppressing our sexuality but by struggling to develop our capacity to experience joy through sexual desire and to honor the responsibility of not generating misery for ourselves and others through that …

Embryonic Stem Cell Research Controversy: Focus On The Private Sector And International Sphere, Sylvia Kim Jan 2003

Embryonic Stem Cell Research Controversy: Focus On The Private Sector And International Sphere, Sylvia Kim

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Despite its tremendous potential for curing various maladies, embryonic stem cell research has not received full funding support from the federal government due-to intense ethical debate surrounding the status of embryos. While the United States has been busy grappling with ethical issues, the private sector and the rest of the world have been making significant progress without stringent government oversight. This Note demonstrates the likely consequences of current federal and state regulations in the U.S. regarding stem cell research and the need for adequate safeguards. Because withholding government funds from stem cell research does not eliminate moral and ethical objections, …

Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt Jan 2003

Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Northern river otters (Lontra canadensis) were widespread in North America at the time of European settlement. However, river otters were extirpated from most of Iowa in the early 1900s due to habitat degradation and unregulated harvest. In 1985, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources began an effort to restore the river otter population throughout the state, including a pilot study of survival to determine if establishment was feasible. Annual survival was estimated to be 86% during the pilot study. River otters dispersed an average of about 11 km from the point of release and exhibited habitat use typical for the …

Occurrence Of Ovotestes And Plasma Vitellogenin In Feral Male Fathead Minnows From Lagoons Of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities In Central Iowa, Robert B. Bringolf, Robert C. Summerfelt Jan 2003

Occurrence Of Ovotestes And Plasma Vitellogenin In Feral Male Fathead Minnows From Lagoons Of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities In Central Iowa, Robert B. Bringolf, Robert C. Summerfelt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Since the early 1990s, endocrine disrupting compounds have been recognized as an important environmental threat. Male fish exposed to effluent from large, metropolitan municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs) have developed reproductive abnormalities including ovotestes and elevated levels of plasma vitellogenin (Vtg), a plasma protein typically produced by egg-laying females. In the summer of 2000, gonads and plasma Vtg concentrations were examined in feral male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) collected from lagoons of 11 small, rural municipal WWTFs and a reference site (a national wildlife refuge) in Iowa. Fathead minnows were captured in traps from five of the 33 lagoons (three …

A Key To The Eggs And Nests Of Iowa Turtles, James L. Christiansen, Jeffrey R. Parmelee Jan 2003

A Key To The Eggs And Nests Of Iowa Turtles, James L. Christiansen, Jeffrey R. Parmelee

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Biologists often need to identify destroyed turtle nests where a predator has excavated and eaten the eggs. We present a dichotomous key to the eggs and nests of Iowa's turtles based on egg or nest morphology and known range of the species. Egg and nest morphology clearly separated most nests of the families Chelydridae and Kinosternidae and many of the Emydidae. However, egg morphology must be combined with known range to distinguish wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) from other emydids. These factors will also separate most false map turtles (Graptemys pseudogeographica) from other species. Similarities among egg morphologies, nest morphologies, and …

An Ecological Study Of The Spotted Salamander, Ambystoma Maculatum, And Jefferson Salamander, A. Jeffersonianum, In West Virginia, Seth J. Myers

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The movements of Spotted Salamanders, Ambystoma maculatum, and Jefferson Salamanders, A. jeffersonianum, in and out of an ephemeral wetland in West Virginia were monitored for one breeding season using a drift fence lined with funnel traps. Significant movements of A. jeffersonianum coincided with rainfall and maximum daily air temperatures reaching a minimum of 5° C. Significant movements of A. maculatum coincided with rainfall and maximum daily air temperatures of at least 10° C. A. jeffersonianum preceded A. maculatum to the breeding site. Males of both species preceded females. The mark-recapture estimate of A. maculatum is 67 males and 25 females. …

The author of more than twenty volumes of poetry, over twenty plays, two novels, and three collections of essays, Michael McClure is one of the most prolific and enduring figures to emerge from the Beat movement. As one of the five poets to begin his career at the Six Gallery reading in 1955, the reading which launched the Beat movement, he shares a long and rich history with Allen Ginsberg, Philip Whalen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Philip Lamantia, and many other writers of San Francisco’s Beat period.
