Nontarget Bird Use Of Drc-1339 Bait Sites During Operational Baiting Programs In Louisiana And Texas, Patricia A. Pipas, John L. Cummings, John D. Eisemann, Richard M. Engeman
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Nontarget bird use of DRC-1339 bait sites was assessed during operational baiting programs from 2000-2002 in Louisiana and from 2001-2002 in Texas. DRC-1339 is an avicide registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to manage blackbirds causing damage to agriculture. It was used in Louisiana between 15 February to 15 March and in Texas from January though March to protect newly planted rice. In Louisiana, there were 55 bait sites observed during 316 observation periods (158 observation hours) and 312 flush-counts conducted from 2000-2002. In Texas, there were 26 bait sites observed during 182 observation periods (91 observation hours) and …
Understanding Blackbird Sensory Systems And How Repellent Applications Work, Scott J. Werner, Larry Clark
Understanding Blackbird Sensory Systems And How Repellent Applications Work, Scott J. Werner, Larry Clark
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We reviewed the learning processes and sensory capabilities of birds, with a special emphasis on chemical repellents and wildlife damage management. Repellents include several methods and devices used to manipulate behavior of birds in attempt to reduce damage or nuisance. Effective applications of chemical repellents to reduce bird damages are dependant upon an adequate understanding of the sensory modalities and modes of animal learning that are affected by a repellent. Chemical repellents can elicit withdrawal from specific or combined sensory stimuli or by producing learned avoidance via association between adverse postingestive effects and specific sensory cues. The application of repellents …
Characterization And Correlation Analysis Of Pharmaceutical Gelatin, Pascal Georges Felix
Characterization And Correlation Analysis Of Pharmaceutical Gelatin, Pascal Georges Felix
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The properties of the aged gel and subsequent softgels were examined using mechanical and chemical testing methods. Our hypothesis was that a negligible variation will exist between the aged gel of the same type. The greater difference is expected to be seen between the types of gels described as 150 Bloom (alkaline treated collagen) and 195 Bloom (acid treated collagen).
The types of gelatin used were the acid processed (195 Acid Bone) and alkaline processed (150 Lime Bone). Because of the differences expressed as the result of their manufacture sequence (namely their molecular weights), it follows that physical attributes will …

N-Thiolated Β-Lactams: Chemistry And Biology Of A Novel Class Of Antimicrobial Agents For Mrsa, Timothy E. Long
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
N-Methylthio beta-lactams represent a promising new family of antibacterial agents whose in vitro activity is confined largely to Staphylococcus species, including multidrug-resistant forms of S. aureus. Originally developed in the 1980's for use as synthetic intermediates, N-methylthio beta-lactams have recently been shown in these laboratories to possess intriguing biological properties which are addressed in Chapters I-IV. In terms of the antibacterial activities, the structural features and species specificities exhibited by these compounds are unlike those of any existing family of beta-lactam drugs. The lactams seem to exert their effects intracellularly, requiring passage of the bioactive species through the …

Writing Assessment As Gate-Keeping: Preventing Undergraduate And Graduate Academic Achievement And Degree Attainment Among Poor Students Of Color , Garry Rolison, Kathrine Rolison
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)
This essay discusses how writing serves to prevent academic progress among students of color on predominantly white campuses. In particular, the work identifies writing as a strategy to maintain as hegemonic Eurocentric truth and knowledge against knowledge and truth challenges as they come from communities of color.

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population, U.S. Breeding Segment Fall 2003, James A. Dubovsky
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Observers counted 417 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the U.S. Breeding Segment of the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during fall of 2003, an increase from 371 counted from comparable areas last year. The increase was attributable mostly to an increase in production (+60%) from that in 2002; the number of white birds (321) was slightly higher than that of last year (311). Increases occurred in all 3 states in which the Tri-state Area Flocks nest, and was greatest in Montana (+26%). Increases in Idaho and Wyoming were 9% and 23%, respectively. The number of birds in restoration …

Substrate-Based Inhibitors Of Peptidylglycine Á-Amidating Monooxygenase (Pam) As Anti-Proliferative Drugs For Cancer, Geoffrey H. Chew
Substrate-Based Inhibitors Of Peptidylglycine Á-Amidating Monooxygenase (Pam) As Anti-Proliferative Drugs For Cancer, Geoffrey H. Chew
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
C-Terminal glycine-extended prohormones are enzymatically converted to á-amidated peptides, by peptidylglycine á-amidating monooxygenase (PAM). PAM is a bifunctional enzyme with two catalytic domains: peptidylglycine á-hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM) and peptidylglycine peptidylglycineaminoglycolate lyase (PAL).
PAM has a significant role in the proliferation of androgen-independent prostate cancer. Thus, the inhibition of PAM could halt cancer growth. Hippurate and hippurate analogs were used as lead compounds for developing inhibitors for PAM. The hippurate analogs exhibiting the highest affinity to PAM (lowest inhibition constant) did inhibit the growth of human androgen-independent prostate cancer DU 145 cells.

Culture And Restoration Of Mussel Species Of Concern: Final Report, M. Christopher Barnhart
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
This report describes the third and final year of a 3-year project (E-1-35) to propagate and augment populations of mussel species of concern, including the Neosho mucket (Lampsilis rafinesqueana, the pink mucket (Lampsilis abrupta), and the scaleshell (Leptodea leptodon). Work with these species is continuing under a new Section 6 grant (E-1-43, Propagation and Restoration of Special Concern Mussel Species).
