Sediment Transport By Dry Ravel, Emmanuel Gabet Jan 2003

Sediment Transport By Dry Ravel, Emmanuel Gabet

Faculty Publications

Dry ravel is a general term that describes the rolling, bouncing, and sliding of individual particles down a slope and is a dominant hillslope sediment transport process in steep arid and semiarid landscapes. During fires, particles can be mobilized by the collapse of sediment wedges that have accumulated behind vegetation. On a daily basis, particles may be mobilized by bioturbation and by small landslides. Experiments on a dry ravel flume indicate that a basic expression of the momentum equation predicts the distance traveled by particles propelled down a rough surface. This equation is further elaborated to produce a nonlinear slope-dependent …

Genetic Relationships Between Scrotal Circumference And Female Reproductive Traits, G. Martinez-Valezquez, K. E. Gregory, G. L. Bennett, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Records for yearling scrotal circumference (SC; n = 7,580), age at puberty in heifers (AP; n = 5,292), age at first calving (AFC; n = 4,835), and pregnancy, calving, or weaning status following the first breeding season (PR1, CR1, or WR1, respectively; n = 7,003) from 12 Bos taurus breeds collected at the Meat Animal Research Center (USDA) between 1978 and 1991 were used to estimate genetic parameters. Age at puberty (AP) was defined as age in days at first detected ovulatory estrus. Pregnancy (calving or weaning) status was scored as one for females conceiving (calving or weaning) given exposure …

Odor Management Information For Livestock Operations, Charles Ullery, Stephen Pohl, Alvaro Garcia, Hans Stein

SDSU Extension Special Series

Odor and other air-borne emissions have always been associated with livestock production operations. As these operations become larger and more concentrated, the management of odor and dust emissions to reduce their negative impacts on livestock producers and adjacent land users becomes an important issue. This paper provides basic concepts about the production, measurement, and dispersion of livestock-operation odors.

Ineffectiveness Of Sulfur-Based Odors As Nesting Deterrents Against European Starlings, Randolph J. White, Bradley F. Blackwell Jan 2003

Ineffectiveness Of Sulfur-Based Odors As Nesting Deterrents Against European Starlings, Randolph J. White, Bradley F. Blackwell

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Sulfurous volatiles have been shown to elicit avoidance behavior by snow geese (Cben caerulescens Linnaeus), possibly because of their association with potentially toxic levels of selenium in some plant species. We questioned whether an avoidance response to sulfur and sulfur-based products might be exhibited by other avian species, specifically European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris L) and whether the behavior might extend beyond the feeding context (that is, negatively affecting nesting). The European starling is an omnivorous species with a well-developed olfactory capability and can distinguish between plant volatiles when selecting nest material and, therefore, could possibly detect …

Determination Of 4,4'-Dinitrocarbanilide (Dnc), A Component Of Nicarbazin, In Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis) Eggshells Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Randal S. Stahl, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Teresa L. Buettgenbach, John J. Johnston Jan 2003

Determination Of 4,4'-Dinitrocarbanilide (Dnc), A Component Of Nicarbazin, In Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis) Eggshells Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Randal S. Stahl, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Teresa L. Buettgenbach, John J. Johnston

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A method was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography to assay 4,4'-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC), the active ingredient in Nicarbazin, in eggshells collected from Canada geese fed a formulated feed fortified with Nicarbazin at doses of 0, 125, 250, and 500 μg/g. The method was developed using chicken eggshells fortified with DNC. The method was used to quantify DNC in both the shell-associated membranes and the calcified shell extracellular matrix. These values were compared to those obtained for a composite sample consisting of both the membranes and the calcified shell extracellular matrix. The validated method was used to quantify DNC in eggshells from …

Whither Pql?, Norm Breslow Jan 2003

Whither Pql?, Norm Breslow

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) are generalized linear models with normally distributed random effects in the linear predictor. Penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL), an approximate method of inference in GLMMs, involves repeated fitting of linear mixed models with “working” dependent variables and iterative weights that depend on parameter estimates from the previous cycle of iteration. The generality of PQL, and its implementation in commercially available software, has encouraged the application of GLMMs in many scientific fields. Caution is needed, however, since PQL may sometimes yield badly biased estimates of variance components, especially with binary outcomes.

Recent developments in numerical integration, including adaptive …
