Dynamic Networks For Motion Planning In Multi-Robot Space Systems, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Jean-Claude Latombe Mar 2003

Dynamic Networks For Motion Planning In Multi-Robot Space Systems, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Jean-Claude Latombe

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A new motion planning framework is presented that enables multiple mobile robots with limited ranges of sensing and communication to maneuver and achieve goals safely in dynamic environments. The framework is applicable to both planetary rover and free-floating space robot applications. To combine the respective advantages of centralized and de-centralized planning, this framework is based on the concept of centralized planning within dynamic robot networks. As the robots move in their environment, localized robot groups form networks, within which world models and robot goals can be shared. Whenever a network is formed, new information becomes available to all robots in …

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2003 Annual Report

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Wolves (Canis lupus) in the Northern Rocky Mountain states (Idaho, Montana and Wyoming) continue to increase in distribution and numbers (Figures 1, 5). Estimates of wolf numbers at the end of 2003 were 368 wolves in the Central Idaho Recovery Area, 301 in the Greater Yellowstone Recovery Area, and 92 in the Northwest Montana Recovery Area for a total of 761 (Figure 1, Table 4a). By state boundaries, there were an estimated 345 wolves in the state of Idaho, 234 in Wyoming and 182 in Montana (Table 4b). Of approximately 94 groups of two or more wolves, 51 …

Gene Therapy For Pediatric Cancer: State Of The Art And Future Perspectives, Ettore Biagi, Catherine Bollard, Raphael Rousseau, Malcolm Brenner Mar 2003

Gene Therapy For Pediatric Cancer: State Of The Art And Future Perspectives, Ettore Biagi, Catherine Bollard, Raphael Rousseau, Malcolm Brenner

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

While modern treatments have led to a dramatic improvement in survival for pediatric malignancy, toxicities are high and a significant proportion of patients remain resistant. Gene transfer offers the prospect of highly specific therapies for childhood cancer. "Corrective" genes may be transferred to overcome the genetic abnormalities present in the precancerous cell. Alternatively, genes can be introduced to render the malignant cell sensitive to therapeutic drugs. The tumor can also be attacked by decreasing its blood supply with genes that inhibit vascular growth. Another possible approach is to modify normal tissues with genes that make them more resistant to conventional …

Laminitis In Horses, Dee L. Cross Mar 2003

Laminitis In Horses, Dee L. Cross

Clemson Patents

The present invention generally relates to various methods for treating the laminitis syndrome in animals. These benefits are obtained by administering to the animals a composition containing an .alpha.-adrenergic antagonist that does not substantially cross the blood brain barrier. In one embodiment, the .alpha.-adrenergic antagonist is domperidone. The domperidone can be administered to the animal either orally, subcutaneously, or intramuscularly and can be used to treat animals suffering from symptoms of laminitis.

Common Raven Nests In Eastern Kentucky, John J. Cox, Nathan W. Seward, Jeffrey L. Larkin, David S. Maehr Mar 2003

Common Raven Nests In Eastern Kentucky, John J. Cox, Nathan W. Seward, Jeffrey L. Larkin, David S. Maehr

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Although ravens were once widespread throughout Appalachia they are now considered threatened or endangered in many states of the region. We document a nesting pair of common ravens in an area of southeastern Kentucky nearly 50 km northwest of traditional nesting sites. Further, we suggest several factors that may have influenced the patterns of raven abundance in the state and offer management recommendations to assist their recovery.

Declarative And Dynamic Context Specification Supporting Mobile Computing In Ad Hoc Networks, Christine Julien, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Qingfeng Huang Mar 2003

Declarative And Dynamic Context Specification Supporting Mobile Computing In Ad Hoc Networks, Christine Julien, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Qingfeng Huang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Context-aware computing is characterized by the ability of a software system to continuously adapt its behavior to a changing environment over which it has little or no control. Previous work along these lines presumed a rather narrow definition of context that centered on resources immediately available to the component in question, e.g., communication bandwidth, physical location, etc. This paper explores context-aware computing in the setting of ad hoc networks consisting of numerous mobile hosts interacting with each other opportunistically via transient wireless interconnections. We extend a component’s context to encompass awareness of a neighborhood within the ad hoc network. A …

Grain Boundary Scars And Spherical Crystallography, Mark Bowick, A. R. Bausch Mar 2003

Grain Boundary Scars And Spherical Crystallography, Mark Bowick, A. R. Bausch

Physics - All Scholarship

We describe experimental investigations of the structure of two-dimensional spherical crystals. The crystals, formed by beads self-assembled on water droplets in oil, serve as model systems for exploring very general theories about the minimum energy configurations of particles with arbitrary repulsive interactions on curved surfaces. Above a critical system size we find that crystals develop distinctive high-angle grain boundaries, or scars, not found in planar crystals. The number of excess defects in a scar is shown to grow linearly with the dimensionless system size. The observed slope is expected to be universal, independent of the microscopic potential.

Faculty Publications

Asthma and mouse models of allergic respiratory inflammation are invariably associated with a pulmonary eosinophilia; however, this association has remained correlative. In this report, a causative relationship between eosinophils and allergen-provoked pathologies was established using eosinophil adoptive transfer. Eosinophils were transferred directly into the lungs of either naive or OVA-treated IL-5-/- mice. This strategy resulted in a pulmonary eosinophilia equivalent to that observed in OVA-treated wild-type animals. A concomitant consequence of this eosinophil transfer was an increase in Th2 bronchoalveolar lavage cytokine levels and the restoration of intracellular epithelial mucus in OVA-treated IL-5-/- mice equivalent to OVA-treated wild-type levels. Moreover, …

Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis Of Avhrr Sea Surface Temperature Patterns In Taiwan Strait, Ming-An Lee, Ching-Dong Yeah, Chao-Hsiung Cheng, Jui-Wen Chan, Kuo-Tien Lee Mar 2003

Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis Of Avhrr Sea Surface Temperature Patterns In Taiwan Strait, Ming-An Lee, Ching-Dong Yeah, Chao-Hsiung Cheng, Jui-Wen Chan, Kuo-Tien Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was used to study a time-series of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imageries from the waters of Taiwan Strait to examine the temporal and spatial characteristics and to determine the dominant pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) variability for 72 months from January 1996 to December 2001. The spatial variance was consistent with a quasi-permanent front at the Chang-Yuen Ridge in winter and associated with strong temperature contrast to the Kuroshio branch or the South China Sea Warm Current. It also displayed a cool water plume extending from the Peng-Hu Islands to Formosa …
