Two Arabidopsis Circadian Oscillators Can Be Distinguished By Differential Temperature Sensitivity, Todd P. Michael, Patrice A. Salome, C. Robertson Mcclung Mar 2003

Two Arabidopsis Circadian Oscillators Can Be Distinguished By Differential Temperature Sensitivity, Todd P. Michael, Patrice A. Salome, C. Robertson Mcclung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Circadian rhythms are widespread in nature and reflect the activity of an endogenous biological clock. In metazoans, the circadian system includes a central circadian clock in the brain as well as distinct clocks in peripheral tissues such as the retina or liver. Similarly, plants have distinct clocks in different cell layers and tissues. Here, we show that two different circadian clocks, distinguishable by their sensitivity to environmental temperature signals, regulate the transcription of genes that are expressed in the Arabidopsis thaliana cotyledon. One oscillator, which regulates CAB2 expression, responds preferentially to light–dark versus temperature cycles and fails to respond to …

Stable But Variable Characterizes Nebraska Agricultural Land Values, Glenn A. Helmers, Bruce B. Johnson Mar 2003

Stable But Variable Characterizes Nebraska Agricultural Land Values, Glenn A. Helmers, Bruce B. Johnson

Cornhusker Economics

The results of UNL's 2003 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey indicate a slight decline in overall land values compared to 2002 (-.4 percent). However, variability within the state and among land types indicates more complexity and less uniformity in changes than in previous years. In the past 16 years overall land values declined only twice (1999 and 2003). Thus, the slight decline in 2003 values is not strong evidence of a leveling off in the generally increasing trend in land values, yet large declines of land values in some areas raise concern over what economic forces are at work.

Engaging Smokers With Schizophrenia In Treatment For Tobacco Dependence: A Brief Motivational Interviewing Intervention, Marc L. Steinberg Mar 2003

Engaging Smokers With Schizophrenia In Treatment For Tobacco Dependence: A Brief Motivational Interviewing Intervention, Marc L. Steinberg

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine how to best motivate smokers with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder to seek treatment for tobacco dependence. Smokers with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (N=78) were randomly assigned to receive a Motivational Interviewing, Psychoeducational, or Minimal Control intervention. A greater proportion of participants receiving the Motivational Interviewing intervention followed through on a referral for tobacco dependence treatment within one-week and one-month post-intervention. Mixed model Analyses of Variance found no differences between groups at one-week or at one-month with respect to tobacco use or motivation to quit. Within group analyses indicated that participants in the …

The Politics Of Cather’S Regionalism: Margins, Centers And The Nebraskan Commonwealth, Guy Reynolds Mar 2003

The Politics Of Cather’S Regionalism: Margins, Centers And The Nebraskan Commonwealth, Guy Reynolds

Department of English: Presentations

Willa Cather remains a central figure in literary regionalism because she puts the central tenets of regionalism under intellectual pressure. One of the most familiar ways of thinking about American regions has been to think about an opposition between ‘section’ and ‘region’. Region tends to be used to define a geographical area, whereas a section denotes political or cultural identity. Cather is almost a sectionalist in her focus on the cultural and intellectual distinctiveness of the Nebraskan Commonwealth; but the very term itself links Nebraska to Virginia, rupturing a simple sense of section. Cather has a geographer’s sense of regional …

Prepulse Inhibition And The Acoustic Startle Response In Nine Inbred Mouse Strains, Jennifer Robin O'Steen Mar 2003

Prepulse Inhibition And The Acoustic Startle Response In Nine Inbred Mouse Strains, Jennifer Robin O'Steen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of genetic background on the acoustic startle response (ASR) and its modulation by prepulse inhibition (PPI) by comparing nine inbred strains of mice. The ASR, a jerk-like motor reflex, is elicited by bursts of noise or tones with sound pressure levels of 80-90 dB and greater. PPI is a type of modulation of the ASR, requires no training, and results in observable response in both mice and humans.

Data were obtained from nine inbred mouse strains, sixteen per strain, which were shipped at approximately 3-5 weeks old from The Jackson Laboratory. In general, ASRs were …
