Plasma And Red Blood Cells Membrane Lipid Concentration Of Sickle Cell Disease Patients, Zuhair M. Marzouki, Samir M. Khoja Apr 2003

Plasma And Red Blood Cells Membrane Lipid Concentration Of Sickle Cell Disease Patients, Zuhair M. Marzouki, Samir M. Khoja

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine the concentration of plasma and red blood cells (RBCs) membrane lipids in Saudi sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. METHODS: This study was carried out at the Hematology Clinic, King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from October 1998 to October 1999. Lipid concentrations were determined in plasma and RBC membrane of 81 SCD patients and 66 normal healthy matched individuals (control). Different lipid parameters were measured according to standardized enzymatic assay methods. RESULTS: The plasma concentrations of total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol of SCD patients were significantly decreased (p<0.001), whereas the plasma concentrations of high density lipoprotein phospholipids were significantly increased (p<0.001). The plasma concentrations of apo A and apo B were significantly decreased (p<0.001) in SCD patients. However, the concentration of total cholesterol of RBC membrane was significantly increased (p<0.001) in SCD patients, while the phospholipid content was significantly decreased (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The significant increase of RBC membrane cholesterol concentration in SCD patients possibly is responsible to the change in RBC membrane fluidity that may play a direct role in the sickling phenomenon of RBCs in SCD.

The Virtual Beta: An Interactive Fish Using Java Script And Css, Lauren B. Carroll '03

Honors Projects

My first version of the fish was written in C, because it was the language I was studying at the time. I wanted something that more people could view easily, however and one that could manage images more simply than C. I ended up choosing ]avaScript. At first I tried to translate my C program directly to ]avaScript, but I soon found this was too complex a task.

A Survey Of Sites And Relics On The Slave Trade In Ghana: A History Archaeology Perspective, Brooke Takala Apr 2003

A Survey Of Sites And Relics On The Slave Trade In Ghana: A History Archaeology Perspective, Brooke Takala

African Diaspora ISPs

This research consists of historical archaeological perspective synthesized as a survey of slave trafficking sites and relics. Personal observation combined with various sources such as written and oral histories have been consulted. As a student of ethnic Studies in the United States, my research has previously consisted of queries of race relations and current policies that invariably stem from the enslavement and forced migration of Africans to the "New World." To further my understanding of race and ethnicity issues, I felt it imperative to acquire expanded knowledge of the slave trade in West Africa, particularly Ghana. Due to a short …

Urban Conservation Treaty For Migratory Birds: Making Cities Better For Birds Apr 2003

Urban Conservation Treaty For Migratory Birds: Making Cities Better For Birds

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Why an Urban Conservation Treaty for Migratory Birds?

For the vast majority of people, birds represent their most frequent contact with wildlife. Birds are a valuable resource, contributing aesthetically, culturally, scientifically, and economically to America’s citizens. Urban areas are critical for migrating birds. Large concentrations of birds migrate along flyways or routes on which many large urban centers have developed. Important bird habitat is often found within these metropolitan areas. With an environmentally aware citizenry dedicated to conserving and enhancing their natural resources, cities can be sanctuaries for migratory birds and other wildlife.

What Is an Urban Conservation Treaty for …

A Geochemical Survey Of The Natural Waters Of Belize, Central America, Anthony D. Marfia Apr 2003

A Geochemical Survey Of The Natural Waters Of Belize, Central America, Anthony D. Marfia

Masters Theses

A geochemical survey of the natural waters in Belize, Central America was carried out to compliment routine water quality analysis and to identify processes affecting water quality. The objective of this research was to provide a geochemical assessment of natural waters throughout Belize by examining select major ions (Ca2+, Mg2+ , SO42-), and stable isotopes of carbon (13C), oxygen (18O) and hydrogen (2H).

The dominant geology relevant to this investigation comprises a varied landscape of carbonates and elastic sediments in a subtropical rainforest/savannah climate. Stable oxygen and hydrogen …

“Here’S A Little Something For You”: How Therapists Respond To Client Gifts, Sarah Knox, Shirley A. Hess, Elizabeth Nutt Williams, Clara E. Hill

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Descriptions by 12 therapists of their experiences receiving tangible gifts from clients are examined. Using consensual qualitative research (C. E. Hill, B. J. Thompson, & E. N. Williams, 1997) therapists’ overall gift encounters and specifically identified gift events were explored. Results indicated that although clients rarely gave gifts, all of the participants had accepted gifts. Problematic gifts (i.e., ones that raised concern for therapists) were given at more provocative times than were unproblematic gifts (i.e., ones that evoked few concerns for therapists). Both types of gifts were given for various reasons (e.g., appreciation, manipulation, equalization). Participants reported positive and negative …

Lay Participation In Legal Decision Making: Introduction To Law & Policy Special Issue, Valerie P. Hans Apr 2003

Lay Participation In Legal Decision Making: Introduction To Law & Policy Special Issue, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

United States scholarship on lay participation revolves around one predominant form of lay participation, the jury (Hans & Vidmar forthcoming 2004). However, in the legal systems of many countries, laypeople participate as decision makers in other ways. Laypersons serve as judges (Provine 1986), magistrates (Diamond 1993), and private prosecutors (Perez Gil 2003). Lay and law-trained judges may also decide cases together in mixed tribunals (Kutnjak Ivkovi6 2003; Machura 2003; Vidmar 2002). Although diverse in structure, these methods share with the jury a set of animating ideas about lay involvement in legal decision making.

Many of these ideas appear to be …

What Gets Judges In Trouble, Richard H. Underwood Apr 2003

What Gets Judges In Trouble, Richard H. Underwood

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

I wrote this article to collect some cautionary material about “what gets judges in trouble.” I wanted something I could offer to our state judges, practitioners, and my legal ethics students. While I have never been a judge, and while I have never worked for a judicial conduct organization, I have been a law professor for almost twenty-five years and the chairman of a state bar association ethics committee for fourteen. I am not the kind of person who would refrain from holding forth just because I may not know what I am talking about.

When I started out, I …

Choose Ye This Day!!! A Study Surrounding The Dialogue That Concerns The Use Of Traditional Herbal Medicine Versus Modern Scientific Medicine In Ghana., Tina M. Andrews

African Diaspora ISPs

Malaria is one of the leading illnesses and causes of death in Ghana and many West African countries. This virus, though curable, has proven itself to be detrimental to many. Everyday precautions and curative measures, such as insect repellants, mosquito coils, mosquito netting, daily or weekly anti-malarial drugs and the like are used to increase comfort and most importantly sustain life. This particular study was not only comprised to demonstrate the various treatments and cures available, but dares to look at the options of people that may or may not have the resources to obtain the aforementioned preventive measures.
