The Dynamics And Morphology Of Sprites, Dana Moudry
The Dynamics And Morphology Of Sprites, Dana Moudry
Physics
In 1999 the University of Alaska Fairbanks fielded a 1000 fields-per-second intensified CCD camera to study sprites and associated upper atmospheric phenomena occurring above active thunderstorms as part of the NASA Sprites99 campaign. The exceptional clarity and definition obtained by this camera the night of August 18, 1999, provides the most detailed image record of these phenomena that has been obtained to date. The result of a frame-by-frame analysis of the data permits an orderly classification of upper atmospheric optical phenomena, and is the subject matter of this thesis. The images show that both elves and halos, which are diffuse …

Assessing The Health Of Harbor Seals In Alaska, Stephen John Trumble
Assessing The Health Of Harbor Seals In Alaska, Stephen John Trumble
Marine Biology
Declining populations of pinnipeds in the Gulf of Alaska, possibly resulting from changes in prey quality, prompted research to determine the population health status of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) using blood chemistry and digestive constraints. Blood chemistry and morphology reference range values between two harbor seal pup populations in Alaska, one population in continued decline, Prince William Sound, and another in recent increase, Tugidak Island, offered clues that blood values can vary on the population scale and that health assessment must utilize an appropriate set of reference values for valid comparisons. Subsequently, a captive study involving harbor seals yielded changes …
The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge: Economic Importance, Scott Goldsmith, Jerry Brian, N/A Hill
The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge: Economic Importance, Scott Goldsmith, Jerry Brian, N/A Hill
ISER Reports
In this regional economic assessment, we focus primarily on an economic significance analysis; we present a brief economic impact analysis as well. Both are useful for policy analysis, but each measures a different dimension of economic activity. The economic significance of a refuge is a measure of the total number of jobs and the total household income generated by expenditures associated with the management of each refuge, by expenditures of refuge visitors, and by expenditures for the harvest and other use of refuge resources. In Alaska these expenditures directly create jobs for Fish and Wildlife Service employees, for people employed …

Intrinsic Markers In Avian Populations: Explorations In Stable Isotopes, Contaminants, And Genetics, Deborah Anne Rocque
Intrinsic Markers In Avian Populations: Explorations In Stable Isotopes, Contaminants, And Genetics, Deborah Anne Rocque
Biological Sciences
This research outlines the diversity of questions that intrinsic markers have the potential to answer and demonstrates some of these marker's limitations and successes. To test the working hypothesis that feathers grown on different continents have significantly different stable isotope ratios in commonly used markers, I analyzed stable isotopes in two generations of feathers from three species of birds that breed at high latitudes and winter on different continents. As expected, significant differences in stable isotope ratios were detected between summer- and winter-grown feathers in both plover species (Pluvialis fulva and P. domininca). However, no differences were found between the …
Fire And Successional Trajectories In Boreal Forest: Implications For Response To A Changing Climate, Jill Frances Johnstone
Fire And Successional Trajectories In Boreal Forest: Implications For Response To A Changing Climate, Jill Frances Johnstone
Biological Sciences
Because of the key role played by fire in structuring boreal forest ecosystems, interactions between vegetation and fire regime may be an important and dynamic control of forest response to climate change. This research uses a series of field observations and experiments in boreal forests to examine the nature of several potential fire and vegetation interactions, and how such interactions may influence forest response to climate change. Long-term observations of post-fire succession provide information on the timing of tree establishment and the effects of early establishment on subsequent successional trajectories. The role of competitive interactions in driving patterns of early …

The Anchor, Volume 116.24: April 16, 2003, Hope College
The Anchor: 2003
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Age-Specific Reproduction By Female Laughing Gulls (Larus Atricilla), Richard A. Dolbeer, Glen E. Bernhardt
Age-Specific Reproduction By Female Laughing Gulls (Larus Atricilla), Richard A. Dolbeer, Glen E. Bernhardt
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The age at which female gulls first reproduce is poorly documented. We examined plumage and reproductive organs of Laughing Gulls (Larus atricilla) collected from May–August 2000–2001 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, to determine age-specific reproductive effort. Each gull was classified as one year old (hatched in previous year), two years old, or ≥3 years old on the basis of color patterns of the hood and tail feathers and fifth primary flight feather. For females, each ovary was examined to determine if postovulatory follicles were present. In 2000 and 2001, the first gulls with postovulatory follicles were recorded …
