A Fresh Look At Amazon Indians: Karl Von Den Steinen And Curt Nimuendajú, Giants Of Brazilian Anthropology, John Hemming
A Fresh Look At Amazon Indians: Karl Von Den Steinen And Curt Nimuendajú, Giants Of Brazilian Anthropology, John Hemming
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This essay examines two German anthropologists who changed the style of Brazilian anthropology. Karl von den Steinen made first contact with eight peoples of the upper Xingu in the 1880s. His anthropological observations were accurate and valuable, and he was the first to describe indigenous people as individual human beings. Curt Nimuendajú also had no formal training, but was on an anthropological or archaeological expedition every year between 1905–1945, produced a prodigious volume of writing, studied shattered tribal remnants as well as newly contacted peoples, and was a pioneer in championing indigenous rights. Both were seminal figures in the study …

Antipredator Behavior And Physiology Determine Lestes Species Turnover Along The Pond-Permanence Gradient, Robby Stoks, Mark A. Mcpeek
Antipredator Behavior And Physiology Determine Lestes Species Turnover Along The Pond-Permanence Gradient, Robby Stoks, Mark A. Mcpeek
Dartmouth Scholarship
Identifying key traits that shape trade-offs that restrict species to only a subset of environmental gradients is crucial to understanding and predicting species turnover. Previous field experiments have shown that larvae of Lestes damselfly species segregate along the entire gradient of pond permanence and predator presence and that differential predation risk and life history constraints together shape their distribution. Here, we report laboratory experiments that identify key differences in behavior and physiology among species that structure their distributions along this gradient. The absence of adaptive antipredator behavioral responses against large dragonfly larvae and fish of Lestes dryas, the only species …

Analyzing Rhetoric : A Frame Analysis Of The Pro-Life Movement In The United States., Juanita Raley Shever 1949-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to consider the significance of rhetoric used by pro-life social movement organizations to frame the experience of abortion and to label those women who have participated in that experience. The study explores how frames are devised and how these frames are applied so that reality is organized in such a manner as to appear aligned with the religious, moral, and/or philosophical position of the pro-life movement. The study uses pro-life web pages to obtain data; then, analyzes the data for emerging themes and content. The general tasks of framing such as agenda setting are …

"Stay And Fight It Out": Henry W. Slocum And America's Civil War, Brian Christopher Melton
Faculty Dissertations
This dissertation examines the life of Henry W. Slocum, focusing particularly on his time as a commander in the Civil War. Born in Onondaga County, New York on September 24, 1827, Slocum initially followed a military tack, but later left the army to engage in law and business. When war broke out in 1861, he tendered his services to the government as colonel of the 27th New York regiment. He commanded these men at Bull Run, where he was wounded in the leg. Receiving a promotion to brigadier general, he took command of a brigade, and later a division during …

Journalism And New Media: African-American Media Outlet And Their Use Of The Internet., Latara T. Strong
Theses (Pre-2016)
Just a few years ago, a student had to visit the library and search through the card catalog to do research; a mother had to stand in line to purchase movie tickets for her children; spouses of soldiers at war had to wait days for a letter to arrive from his/her significant other serving time overseas; and the list goes on. Today, all of this has changed - the advent of the Internet has revolutionized the lives of every individual across the globe in many ways. Students may now access the library card catalog online; a mother may purchase movie …
Evicting A Neighbor: Health, Power And Discourse In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Nelson Class-Meléndez
Evicting A Neighbor: Health, Power And Discourse In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Nelson Class-Meléndez
Masters Theses
This thesis examines the two years that followed the death of a civilian, David Sanes on April 1999, when a Marine Corps F-18 pilot accidentally dropped two 500- pound bombs on an observation post on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques. Following the death of Sanes and for the first time in contemporary history, all competing political parties, the Viequenses, and religious leaders apparently reached an initial consensus that resulted in a series of efforts to evict the Navy from Vieques.
Importantly, this coalition adopted an environmental discourse that is essentially anti-Navy. This thesis draws upon this anti-Navy discourse to …

Maya Ritual And Myth: Human Sacrifice In The Context Of The Ballgame And The Relationship To The Popol Vuh, Jessica Zaccagnini
Maya Ritual And Myth: Human Sacrifice In The Context Of The Ballgame And The Relationship To The Popol Vuh, Jessica Zaccagnini
Honors Theses
The ballgame existed as an integral facet of Mayan life. Ritual and mythic expression are inextricably linked to the execution of the ballgame and are deeply integrated into Mayan culture. Ritual human sacrifice is an unquestionable aspect related to the ballgame. The Maya rulers extended the outcome of the ballgarne by satisfying the deities through ritual and human sacrifice (Scarborough 1991 :143). The Quiche book of epic narratives, named the Papal Vuh, is a recurring theme in the exploration of the ballgame and it is deeply weighted with mythic significance. A discussion of how this theme is interwoven into the …

Religion In Estonia, Research In English, Janis Cakars
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Estonian is one such understudied language, but Estonia is of no smaller importance to Eastern Europe than any other country. To understand the whole, all the parts must be considered. Therefore, scholars without a command of Estonian by necessity must turn to work published in other languages, most commonly English. This article is meant to serve as an aid to those interested in religion in Eastern Europe without a command of Estonian. It provides a bibliographical and historiographical review of the literature within an outline of religious development in a less commonly studied country. The religious history of Estonia, although …
Hummingbird Size, Pollen Load And Pollination Efficiency, December 2003, Andrew Gapinski
Hummingbird Size, Pollen Load And Pollination Efficiency, December 2003, Andrew Gapinski
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Pollinators are an important selective agent and play a role in the evolution of certain floral characteristics (Fenster, 1991). This is often the case with flower corollas, which have closely coevolved with the length and curvature of the bill or tongue of its pollinators (Stiles 1989) The purpose of this study was to determine the specificity of the coevolution between hummingbirds as pollinators and the species on which they forage. I also hope to examine the bill length- body size relationship, pollen loads and their placements. I hypothesize that short-billed hummingbirds will carry pollen from plant species with short corollas, …

Effects Of Habitat Disturbance On The Territorial Response Of The Gray-Breasted Wood-Wren, Henicorhina Leucophrys, December 2003, Blake Audsley
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Habitat fragmentation and disturbance have become integral aspects of the neotropical landscape, impacting a variety of ecological factors. Here I attempt to quantify the relationship of bird territory size and habitat disturbance by observing the effects of habitat disturbance on avian response to conspecific playback in the Gray-breasted Wood-wren, Henicorhina leucophrys. Mean distance traveled to follow playback increased along a gradient of increasing disturbance (F = 4.435, p-value = .0165, s.d. = 27.256; 47.283; 49.094). Edge habitat birds showed significantly greater response than birds in primary and secondary growth (p-values = 0.0051; 0.0479). Variation in response also differed between habitats. …
The Role Of Metachrosis In Thermoregulation Of Sceloporus Malachiticus, December 2003, Joel Patrick Napier Stonedale
The Role Of Metachrosis In Thermoregulation Of Sceloporus Malachiticus, December 2003, Joel Patrick Napier Stonedale
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Metachrosis is a change in color, common to many amphibians and reptiles. The purpose of this study was to determine if rate of metachrosis correlates with weight in Sceloporus malachiticus. Twenty-one lizards were collected and photographed every half hour, and the change in reflected light in the photographs was measured. There was a significant negative correlation between rate of metachrosis and weight (Simple Regression, P < 0.02), which is an indication that metachrosis aids in thermoregulation. Larger lizards must remain darker longer in order to absorb heat more quickly, because their lower surface area to volume ratio causes them to need more heat for their large bodies that have limited ability to absorb heat due to their proportionately lower surface area. This need for larger lizards to be darker may also explain why other reptiles such as Clelia clelia, Clelia ceytalia, Ctenosaura similis, and Iguana iguana become darker as they grow older and increase in size.

K+- Induced Dilation Of Cremasteric Arterioles Involves Na+/K+Atpase And Inward Rectifier K+ Channels, Wendy Burns
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible mechanisms involved in cremasteric arteriolar dilation as a result of increased concentrations of ([K+]o) extracellular potassium. Many other studies suggested that Na+/K+ ATPase or KIR channels are responsible for potassium-induced vasodilation in other systems (2, 12, 22, 40, 46, 52, 16, 17, 25, 33, 34, 85, 99, 151). However, these studies show only partial inhibition of dilation as a result of independent blockageof each mechanism. The hypothesis of this study was that both mechanisms contribute to potassium-induced dilation seen in cremasteric arterioles. …

Second Thoughts: Toward A Critique Of The Digital Divide, David J. Gunkel
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
This article introduces critical perspective into the discussion of the digital divide, which is commonly defined as the gap separating those individuals who have access to new forms of information technology from those who do not. The analysis is distinguished from other undertakings addressing this matter, insofar as it does not document the empirical problems of unequal access but considers the terminology, logical structure, and form that define and direct work on this important social and ethical issue. The investigation employs the tools of critical theory and targets extant texts, reports, and studies. In this way, the analysis does not …

"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw
"Where Will You Sleep Tonight?" The Samo Longhouse, A Metaphor Of Spatial And Social Structure, R. Daniel Shaw
Pacific Studies
The juxtaposition of physical space and social interaction among the precontact Samo people of Papua New Guinea's east Strickland Plain is analyzed through a rich cultural metaphor reflecting on where people habitually sleep. Where a person sleeps establishes individual status within the collectivity of a household, which is identified as both a dwelling and an interactive group of family-oriented people. A longhouse was typically built on a ridgetop amid gardens, sago-lined swamp, and surrounding forest, together creating an economic environment that, in effect, fed the community. Similarly, social space was created through the reciprocal exchange of female siblings that enabled …

Preparing Teachers To Use Technology: The Webquest In The Secondary English Language Arts Methods Classroom, Melinda C. Dobson
Dissertations
This study focuses on why and how English language arts methods instructors can integrate WebQuest development into their courses. Behavioral, cognitive, and constructive learning theory are established as a theoretical basis for introducing the WebQuest into the English language arts methods curriculum. Practicing teachers are surveyed about their WebQuest-use to identify positive and negative outcomes of the activity. National and international standards the WebQuest fulfills are identified. This study focuses on how to integrate technology in general into the methods course and then documents the development of the researcher's WebQuest and that of three different secondary English language arts methods …
Teachers Integrating Technology: Case Studies, Dawn Basinger
Teachers Integrating Technology: Case Studies, Dawn Basinger
Essays in Education
To understand better the process by which P-12 teachers come to integrate technology into their instructional practices, the researcher undertook a yearlong investigation into technology use at two different school sites in northern Louisiana. Teachers’ stages of concern about technology, levels of technology use, perceptions about coursework impact on technology use and integration, and practices and perceptions about teaching and learning with technology were analyzed. Although all teachers perceived the coursework to be effective in facilitating their utilization and integration of technology, they perceived no single best way to integrate technology. Each teacher identified, designed and developed, and implemented his …

Objective
The actions of volatile anesthetics on left ventricular (LV) function in normal and failing hearts have been previously evaluated, but the effects of these agents on left atrial (LA) function in the presence of LV dysfunction are unknown. The hypothesis was tested that isoflurane alters LA mechanics evaluated with pressure-volume relations.
Design
Prospective.
Setting
Laboratory.
Participants
Barbiturate-anesthetized dogs (n = 8) were instrumented for measurement of aortic, LA, and LV pressures (micromanometers), and LA volume (epicardial orthogonal sonomicrometers) after 3 weeks of rapid ventricular pacing (220 beats/min).
Interventions
LA myocardial contractility (Ees) was assessed with end-systolic pressure-volume …
Studies Of The Effects Of Pancreatic Beta Cell Antioxidant Transgenes On Experimental Models Of Diabetes., Hainan Chen
Studies Of The Effects Of Pancreatic Beta Cell Antioxidant Transgenes On Experimental Models Of Diabetes., Hainan Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pancreatic beta cells are extremely vulnerable to the destruction of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). In both type 1 and type 2 diabetes ROS are involved in the loss of U+000DF-cells. We hypothesized that the deficiency in ROS detoxifying system of U+000DF-cells resulted in U+000DF-cell vulnerability and enhanced ROS protection would protect from diabetes. To test this hypothesis, transgenic mice with overexpression of U+000DF-cell antioxidant protein metallothionein (MT), manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and catalase were produced on an FVB background. Initial studies demonstrated that these transgenes did not affect U+000DF-cell normal function and morphology. But those transgenes significantly protected pancreatic islets …
