Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Epibatidine Analogues, Ying Liu
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Epibatidine Analogues, Ying Liu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In an effect to develop for more selective neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor analgesics that have less toxicity and adverse side effects relative to epibatidine, three new classes of epibatidine analogues were synthesized and evaluated in vitro as potential potent selective nAChR ligands. Specifically, three analogues of epibatidine were synthesized to explore the structure-activity relationships of epibatidine relative to neuromuscular blocking activity as well as nAChRs. Both quaternary epibatidine analogues 2 and bis-epibatidine derivative 3 exhibited high binding affinity relative to nicotine. In addition, a new series of 2-(hydroxyalkylpyridyl)-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane derivatives were synthesized and evaluated as potential ligands for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. …
Tests Of Adaptive Coloration Hypotheses For Madtom (Notorus) Catfishes (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae), Amanda Stokes
Tests Of Adaptive Coloration Hypotheses For Madtom (Notorus) Catfishes (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae), Amanda Stokes
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Predators select for defensive adaptations, such as stings, toxins, and camouflage color patterns. Madtoms, Noturus, are diminutive catfishes with dorsal and pectoral stings. Thirteen of the 25 nominal species have serrated spines in the pectoral sting and a contrasting pigment pattern. Behavior of two saddled species, N. miurus and N. hildebrandi, and one uniformly colored species, N. leptacanthus, was investigated to test if the pigment pattern is camouflage. Saddle spacing and crypticity of the saddled species were measured against various substrates and were found to be unevenly spaced, which could be camouflage when viewed against gravel. Given substrate choices, madtoms …
Targeted Degradation Of Trinitrotoluene Using Iron (Ii)-Cyclodextrin-Peroxide Systems, Bo Wei
Targeted Degradation Of Trinitrotoluene Using Iron (Ii)-Cyclodextrin-Peroxide Systems, Bo Wei
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Residues of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in soil and groundwater near former production and processing plants generate large environmental concerns. A cyclodextrin (CD) mediated Fenton remediation of TNT contaminated water and sand (soil analogy) is presented. Kinetic studies were performed to elucidate the role of cyclodextrin in Fenton remediation of TNT contaminated water. The rate and extent of TNT degraded by Fe2+- CD-H2O2 systems were significantly enhanced as compared to the classic Fenton method. Further, in water system with interfering substance - humic acid, which tends to associate with TNT, the addition of cyclodextrin helped to improve the efficiency of Fenton degradation. …

Luminescent Semiconductor Quantum Dots (Qds) And Their Nanoassemblies As Bioprobes, Yongfen Chen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Quantum dots (QDs) CdS and CdSe were synthesized in three different media including reverse micelles, aqueous solution, and trioctylphosphine oxide/trioctylphosphine (TOPO/TOP). Transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-VIS, fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy were used to characterize the QDs and their nanoassemblies. CdS QDs synthesized in reverse micelles showed broad emission spectra. CdSe-CdS QDs with core shell structure synthesized in aqueous solution showed more than 30% emission quantum yield. CdSe-CdS QDs of different emission colors were prepared. CdSe and CdSe-ZnS QDs were also synthesized in TOPO/TOP media. This synthesis route produced highly luminescent CdSe QDs with over 50% emission quantum …
Developmental Pathways For Children With Disruptive Behavior Disorders, Deborah Phillips
Developmental Pathways For Children With Disruptive Behavior Disorders, Deborah Phillips
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to incorporate attachment theory and psychopathy into a transactional model to explain the development of disruptive behavior disorders in children. The model tested in this study proposed two broad pathways leading to the development of disruptive behavior disorders. Each pathway was characterized by an atrisk child temperament, negative reactivity and psychopathy, which when embedded in an at-risk environment, would result in conduct problems. Hyperactivity and negative life events were hypothesized to be broad band risk factors for both pathways. The first pathway, characterized by callous-unemotional traits (CU), was hypothesized to be positively associated with …

Comparison Of Blood Parameters Associated With Exercise And The Total Antioxidant Power In Sled Dogs Supplemented With Blueberries, Kriya L. Dunlap
Comparison Of Blood Parameters Associated With Exercise And The Total Antioxidant Power In Sled Dogs Supplemented With Blueberries, Kriya L. Dunlap
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Oxidative damage from free radicals plays an important role in several diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease. Research indicates that exercise may contribute to oxidative stress. Fruits, such as blueberries, are good antioxidants because they contain phenolics that preferentially react with free radicals. Maintaining antioxidant levels by supplementing the diet with blueberries may prevent exercise-induced oxidative damage. Additionally, oxidative damage from exercise can temporarily suppress the immune system. The goal of our study was to compare antioxidant levels in sled dogs supplemented with blueberries. Total antioxidant power (TAP), haptoglobin, isoprostane and other blood parameters were measured in …

Water Quality From Rainwater Catchments Throughout Alaska: Looking At Contaminants In Catchment Materials, Corianne Irene Hart
Water Quality From Rainwater Catchments Throughout Alaska: Looking At Contaminants In Catchment Materials, Corianne Irene Hart
Engineering
A field study which focused on linking materials used in rainwater catchments to the quality of water they produce was conducted throughout Alaska in the summer of 2003. The importance of this project stems from the fact that many families throughout Alaska depend on rainwater catchment systems to provide water for washing, cleaning, cooking and/or drinking purposes. After a core group of participants were identified, samples were periodically collected from participants' water taps and were analyzed for a suite of contaminants that included metals (e.g., Pb and Zn), organics (e.g., volatile organic compounds) and bacteria. Based on variables, such as …
A Place For The Birds: The Legacy Of Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Jessica A. Ryan
A Place For The Birds: The Legacy Of Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Jessica A. Ryan
Arctic and Northern Studies
This thesis details the farming history and current importance of the Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in Fairbanks, Alaska. More significantly, it is the story of a grassroots effort by the community of Fairbanks, working with a kindly old farmer, to preserve open land in the heart of a rapidly expanding city for the benefit of the thousands of migrating cranes, geese and ducks that rely upon the grain fields each spring and fall. Because of their vision, Creamer's Field has become a center for environmental education, outdoor recreation, and biological research while actively providing for the needs of wildlife.
An In Vitro Analysis Of Neuronal Survival In Response To Hormones And Photoperiod In The Hvc Of The Songbird Junco Hyemalis, Catherine Martin Humphries
An In Vitro Analysis Of Neuronal Survival In Response To Hormones And Photoperiod In The Hvc Of The Songbird Junco Hyemalis, Catherine Martin Humphries
Chemistry and Biochemistry
The ability of songbirds to sing is essential for their survival, proper reproductive behavior, and territorial establishment. Male and female juvenile passerine songbirds learn their song through the formation of a song template in their earliest days of life, first by listening to their parents, and then followed by auditory feedback against their own templates to crystallize their individual songs. However, in most passerine species, only the adult males actually sing on a seasonal basis with little to no singing during winter, followed by a phase of song production in the spring in correlation with increased plasma testosterone concentration and …
Timing Of Breeding And Reproductive Success In A Subarctic Population Of Yellow Warblers (Dendroica Petechia), Kristine Marie Sowl
Timing Of Breeding And Reproductive Success In A Subarctic Population Of Yellow Warblers (Dendroica Petechia), Kristine Marie Sowl
Biological Sciences
Detailed knowledge of reproductive rates is necessary for understanding population dynamics, but this information is lacking for many populations of migratory songbirds. I examined breeding chronology and reproductive success of Yellow Warblers (Dendroica petechia) breeding in east central Alaska in 1997-2000. Yellow Warblers nested in both spruce forest and willow shrub habitats, but breeding density and nest success were greater in shrub habitat. Annual productivity was influenced by the number of breeding attempts per female, clutch size, success of individual eggs or nestlings, and nest success. Mean clutch size was larger than in lower latitude populations and decreased seasonally. The …
The Role Of Mammalian Herbivores In Primary Succession On The Tanana River Floodplain, Interior Alaska, Lemuel Gordon Butler
The Role Of Mammalian Herbivores In Primary Succession On The Tanana River Floodplain, Interior Alaska, Lemuel Gordon Butler
Biological Sciences
I compared willow (Salix) communities along the Tanana River exposed to varying levels of herbivory to examine how herbivory influences the landscape distribution of vegetation. Moose (Alces alces) and snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) herbivory decreased plant biomass and canopy height and increased the proportion of dead stems in willow communities. Herbivory also shifted the age distribution of plants in willow communities towards younger age classes, and also decreased the number of communities dominated by willow on the landscape. A frame-based simulation model was built to incorporate the effects of herbivory and river fluvial dynamics on plant succession. My results show …
Cultural Activity And Market Enterprise: A Circumpolar Comparison Of Reindeer Herding Communities At The End Of The 20th Century, Michael Stephen Koskey
Cultural Activity And Market Enterprise: A Circumpolar Comparison Of Reindeer Herding Communities At The End Of The 20th Century, Michael Stephen Koskey
Anthropology
Reindeer herding throughout the circumpolar North is in decline. Investigating this decline, this dissertation takes a comparative approach with a focus on four case studies: the Chukchi of Chukotskii Peninsula, the Iñupiat of the Seward Peninsula, the Saami of the Kola Peninsula, and the Saami of Finnmark. Because various rates and types of decline are occurring in these different cases, a comparative method leads to a systematic analysis of how patterns develop in the practice of contemporary reindeer herding, both locally and globally. Comparing and contrasting the trajectories of declines in reindeer herding identifies and explains the dimensions of specific …

Movement And Habitat Utilization By Golden King Crab Lithodes Aequispinus Benedict 1895 In Southeastern Alaska, Zachary N. Hoyt
Fisheries
Movements and habitat use of golden king crabs (GKC), Lithodes aequispinus, were investigated with a manned submersible and ultrasonic telemetry in Frederick Sound, Alaska. Crabs were collected with commercial crab pots and ultrasonic transmitters were attached to the carapaces of 26 crabs; movements and depth distribution of male and female crabs were monitored bi- monthly from May 11, 2000 to April 12, 2001. Crabs preferred steep, complex habitat with hard substrate; few were on flat, soft substrate. Male and female GKC were not segregated by depth in mid-May. Seventeen pairs of courting crabs were observed during dives; 14 of these …
Seasonal Abundance And Diversity Of Nearshore Fishes Around Steller Sea Lion Haulouts Of Kodiak Island, Catherine L. Hegwer
Seasonal Abundance And Diversity Of Nearshore Fishes Around Steller Sea Lion Haulouts Of Kodiak Island, Catherine L. Hegwer
Marine Biology
Nearshore fishes around haulouts are potential prey for Steller sea lions, especially pups, as they learn to forage and supplement their milk diets during weaning. Visual surveys in July and November 2001, and March, May and July 2002 were used to quantify spatial and temporal variation in fish diversity and abundance around two Steller haulouts and two control sites. SCUBA divers sampled depths of 9, 15, 21, 27, and 33 m. Concurrent habitat surveys were used to quantify substrate, macroalga and benthic invertebrate cover. Steller haulout sites had fewer fish than control sites, but similar species richness and species composition …
Factors Affecting Estuarine Populations Of Nereocystis Luetkeana In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, HéLoïSe Anne Chenelot
Factors Affecting Estuarine Populations Of Nereocystis Luetkeana In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, HéLoïSe Anne Chenelot
Marine Biology
Nereocystis luetkeana forms extensive kelp beds in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. Salinity and turbidity gradients apparently regulate kelp bed distribution throughout this estuary. The beds are large at the entrance of the bay, only solitary stands occur in the inner bay, and no kelp is found at the head of the bay. The role of salinity and turbidity on Nereocystis sporophyte growth was investigated by performing reciprocal transplants among three beds along the bay axis and regularly measuring stipe growth. The effects of salinity and light on spores were studied in the laboratory by recording sinking tendency, settlement success, germination success, …
Fluid Flow In Oscillating Cavities, Srivathsan Ragunathan
Fluid Flow In Oscillating Cavities, Srivathsan Ragunathan
Engineering
Oscillatory flows have gained considerable research attention in the recent decades following an interest in transport enhancement in micro-electronic devices. Heat transfer enhancement due to flow modulation has an inherent advantage over conventional mechanical heat transfer components in terms of reduction in weight and space. The present work is aimed at studying fluid flow in oscillating square cavities as a first step towards heat transfer enhancement. A commercial CFD code, Fluent, was used to model a test case consisting of Stokes' second problem, with a source code written in the C programming language. The simulated results were in good agreement …

Fura-2 recording of Ca2+ influx was used to show that incubation in 1 μM nicotine (2–6d) upregulates several pharmacological components of acetylcholine (ACh) responses in ventral midbrain cultures, including a MLA-resistant, DHβE-sensitive component that presumably corresponds to α4β2 receptors. To study changes in α4β2 receptor levels and assembly during this upregulation, we incorporated yellow and cyan fluorescent proteins (YFPs and CFPs) into the α4 or β2 M3–M4 intracellular loops, and these subunits were coexpressed in human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293T cells and cultured ventral midbrain neurons. The fluorescent …

On-Site Wastewater Treatment System, Phil Kappen, Russell Dickerson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Most rural homes in South Dakota are served by an on-site, wastewater treatment system or septic system, but many rural residents do not have the basic information they need to properly operate and maintain their septic systems. There is often a sense of "out of sight, out of mind" when dealing with an on-site system. The purpose of this manual to provide the homeowner with that information. If an on-site system is to fulfill its intended function and properly treat wastewater, three items are necessary. The first two items, proper system design and installation, are the responsibility of the system …

Examining Economic Impact And Recovery In South Dakota From The 2002 Drought, Matthew Diersen, Gary Taylor
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
During the 2002 drought, farm sector economic factors were monitored to assess the likely statewide economic impacts. Timely moisture during the spring of 2003 resulted in a sizeable wheat harvest relative to recent years. Prices in the fall of 2003 have also been significantly higher for cattle and soybeans compared to prices in recent years. As a result, there have been inquiries as to the extent of economic recovery in the farm sector of South Dakota. The purpose of this paper is to outline the estimation procedure used to assess the drought in 2002, validate the extent of the impact, …
