Reconstructing Cetacean Brain Evolution Using Computed Tomography, Lori Marino, Mark D. Uhen, Nicholas D. Pyenson, Bruno Frohlich

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

Until recently, there have been relatively few studies of brain mass and morphology in fossil cetaceans (dolphins, whales, and porpoises) because of difficulty accessing the matrix that fills the endocranial cavity of fossil cetacean skulls. As a result, our knowledge about cetacean brain evolution has been quite limited. By applying the noninvasive technique of computed tomography (CT) to visualize, measure, and reconstruct the endocranial morphology of fossil cetacean skulls, we can gain vastly more information at an unprecedented rate about cetacean brain evolution. Here, we discuss our method and demonstrate it with several examples from our fossil cetacean database. This …

The Role Of Pleckstrin Homology Domains In Phosphoinositide Binding, Evan D. Christensen May 2003

The Role Of Pleckstrin Homology Domains In Phosphoinositide Binding, Evan D. Christensen

Biology

Phosphoinositides are membrane-bound lipids that exist as eight different isoforms resulting from the phosphorylation of their inositol head group at three distinct positions. Proteins with Pleckstrin Homology (PH) domains bind to phosphoinositides involved in the regulation of cellular processes. The binding of several yeast PH domains to phosphoinositides was examined using dot-blot overlay assays, Surface Plasmon Resonance, and in vivo localization methodologies. While most of these yeast PH domains exhibited low specificity and/or low binding affinity, several proteins showed strong in vivo localization to either the plasma membrane or the Golgi membrane in mammalian cells. The role of the YPR115 …

Aboriginal Fishing Strategy : Recognising The Past, Fishing For The Future. Draft Report To The Minister For Agriculture, Forestry And Fisheries, Department Of Fisheries., Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Commission., Fisheries Research And Development Corporation., Department Of Indigenous Affairs.

Fisheries Management Papers

The draft Aboriginal Fishing Strategy report is a comprehensive effort to recognise the interests of Aboriginal people in the protection and use of fish resources in Western Australia. It is perhaps the most comprehensive report of its kind in Australia. As this Government moves toward a more integrated approach to the management of fish resources this report is timely, and represents an opportunity to ensure Aboriginal fishing interests are given appropriate recognition in a more holistic approach to ensuring fish stocks are sustained for future generations.

Substoichiometric Shifting In The Plant Mitochondrial Genome Is Influenced By A Gene Homologous To Muts, Ricardo V. Abdelnoor, Ryan Yule, Annakaisa Elo, Alan C. Christensen, Gilbert Meyer-Gauen, Sally A. Mackenzie May 2003

Mackenzie

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The plant mitochondrial genome is retained in a multipartite structure that arises by a process of repeat-mediated homologous recombination. Low-frequency ectopic recombination also occurs, often producing sequence chimeras, aberrant ORFs, and novel subgenomic DNA molecules. This genomic plasticity may distinguish the plant mitochondrion from mammalian and fungal types. In plants, relative copy number of recombination-derived subgenomic DNA molecules within mitochondria is controlled by nuclear genes, and a genomic shifting process can result in their differential copy number suppression to nearly undetectable levels. We have cloned a nuclear gene that regulates mitochondrial substoichiometric shifting in Arabidopsis. The CHM gene was …

Research Proposal: Dogs As Reducers Of Anxiety In Social Situations, Jennifer L. Sytsma

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

For many years animals have played a large part in the average family unit. Animals become more than just pets and begin to be considered a family member or a best friend. With such close relationships developing between owner and pet it would not be far fetched to say that animals could act as a social mediator for those who suffer from chronic anxiety in social situations.

I believe that pets can greatly reduce stress and anxiety during social interactions with those who suffer from social anxiety. Since dogs are the most commonly seen pets in an outside setting most …

Positive And Negative Modulatory Roles Of Platelet Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 Signaling In Endothelial Cell Migration: Coordination Of Rho Signaling And Targeting Of Shp-2 Tyrosine Phosphatase Activity, Dita Gratzinger May 2003

Positive And Negative Modulatory Roles Of Platelet Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 Signaling In Endothelial Cell Migration: Coordination Of Rho Signaling And Targeting Of Shp-2 Tyrosine Phosphatase Activity, Dita Gratzinger

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Platelet Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (PECAM-1), an immunoglobulin family adhesion molecule, is involved in endothelial migration and angiogenesis. We found that PECAM-1 deficient endothelial cells exhibit enhanced nondirected single cell motility and extension formation at the expense of wound-healing migration. These in vitro endothelial behaviors model aspects of highly developmentally and pathophysiologically relevant processes. Wound healing migration may model the reendothelialization of denuded vasculature following balloon angioplasty or the remodeling of vascular endothelium under variant flow conditions, while single cell motility is prominently involved in developmental processes such as endocardial-mesenchymal transition within the cardiac cushion. A specific deficiency of RhoGTP …

This paper reports on the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) DOE Initiative in Image Science and Technology (ISAT) research, which is developing algorithms and software tool sets for remote sensing and biological applications. In particular, the PNNL ISAT work is applying these research results to the automated analysis of real-time cellular biology imagery to assist the biologist in determining the correct data collection region for the current state of a conglomerate of living cells in three-dimensional motion. The real-time computation of the typical 120 MB/sec multi-spectral data sets is executed in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, which has …

Designing Smooth Motions Of Rigid Objects: Computing Curves In Lie Groups, Ross Monet Richardson May 2003

Designing Smooth Motions Of Rigid Objects: Computing Curves In Lie Groups, Ross Monet Richardson

HMC Senior Theses

Consider the problem of designing the path of a camera in 3D. As we may identify each camera position with a member of the Euclidean motions, SE(3), the problem may be recast mathematically as constructing interpolating curves on the (non-Euclidean) space SE(3). There exist many ways to formulate this problem, and indeed many solutions. In this thesis we shall examine solutions based on simple geometric constructions, with the goal of discovering well behaved and computable solutions. In affine spaces there exist elegant solutions to the problem of curve design, which are collectively known as the techniques of Computer Aided Geometric …

Using Satellite Imagery To Evaluate The Impact Of Urban Forest On Summertime Residential Electricity Consumption In Terre Haute, Indiana, Usa, James R. Boulton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urban areas are horne to a large portion of the population of the United States and also a significant portion ofthe nation's forest resource. This urban forest contributes to the richness of the urban lifestyle in many ways, including aesthetic improvements, cleaning and protecting air, land, and water resources, and reducing the urban heat island effect. This thesis studies the degree to which energy reduction attributable to the urban forest can be determined using remotely sensed data. Results showed a slight inverse relationship between urban forest density and energy usage, meaning that as the density of trees increases there is …

Does Free Exercise Mean Free State Funding? In Davey V. Locke, The Ninth Circuit Undervalued Washington's Vision Of Religious Liberty, Derek D. Green May 2003

Does Free Exercise Mean Free State Funding? In Davey V. Locke, The Ninth Circuit Undervalued Washington's Vision Of Religious Liberty, Derek D. Green

Washington Law Review

In Davey v. Locke, a panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that Washington violated the Free Exercise Clause by refusing to allow a scholarship recipient to use state funds to pursue a theology degree. The court held that the state's scholarship requirements facially discriminated against religion, and that the state's interest in not violating its constitution did not serve as a compelling reason for the discrimination. In so holding, the Davey court ignored Ninth Circuit precedent and embraced a theory of the Religion Clauses at odds with United States Supreme Court jurisprudence. …
