Spring Field Report, March-May 2003, W. Ross Silcock Jun 2003

Spring Field Report, March-May 2003, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

This spring was characterized by a lack of significant ornithological events, although readers will find tidbits of interest under the following species: Greater White-fronted Goose, Mandarin Duck (believe it or not), Common Merganser, Peregrine Falcon, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Great Horned Owl, and Blue-winged Warbler. A significant concentration of warblers and flycatchers was detected at Walnut Grove Park in Omaha in late May; check the species accounts for details. The restoration of prairie grasslands at Boyer Chute NWR seems to be paying off; Henslow's Sparrows were found there this spring for the first time. There were several new high counts, with perhaps …

This report summarizes the initial findings of a survey of members of the Chefs Collaborative organization. The Chefs Collaborative is a national network of more than 1,000 members of the food community who promote sustainable cuisine by celebrating the joys of local, seasonal and artisanal ingredients. Many of the Chefs Collaborative members have significant expertise in purchasing locally grown food products. Six Opinions By Mr. Justice Stevens: A New Methodology For Constitutional Cases?, Robert F. Nagel Jun 2003

Six Opinions By Mr. Justice Stevens: A New Methodology For Constitutional Cases?, Robert F. Nagel

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Essay examines six opinions authored by Justice John Paul Stevens for the purpose of assessing whether his iconoclastic methodology might represent an attractive alternative to standard doctrinalism. Each of the opinions involves an effort to reconcile the right "to be left alone" with some other constitutional value. In all but one, conventional formulae are replaced by rather candid interest balancing that draws on nonlegal cultural resources in a relatively transparent way. At its best, this approach allows for realism and a commonsensical accommodation of disparate interests. However, at its worst it leads to opinions that are characterized by a …

Ownership And Stewardship: Attitudes Among Michigan’S Voters Impacting Opposition To Great Lakes Water Diversions, Bruce A. Nanzer Jun 2003

Ownership And Stewardship: Attitudes Among Michigan’S Voters Impacting Opposition To Great Lakes Water Diversions, Bruce A. Nanzer

Dissertations

The problem addressed by this research can be demonstrated through the following scenario: If we were to ask randomly chosen voters in the state of Michigan if they possessed sufficient knowledge of Great Lakes water diversion policy, the answer would likely be no. Yet, if after a short description of the purpose for this type of policy, the voter was questioned about supporting such actions he or she would likely voice strong support for strategies that would prevent water diversions.

The objective of this research was to understand why Michigan's voters would readily voice opposition to Great Lakes water diversions …

Chromatin Of Endoreduplicated Pavement Cells Has Greater Range Of Movement Than That Of Diploid Guard Cells In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Naohiro Kato, Eric Lam Jun 2003

Chromatin Of Endoreduplicated Pavement Cells Has Greater Range Of Movement Than That Of Diploid Guard Cells In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Naohiro Kato, Eric Lam

Faculty Publications

In the current model of chromatin organization in the interphase cell nucleus, chromosomes are organized into territories. Although constrained diffusion of chromatin in interphase cells has been confirmed in all cell types examined, little is known about chromatin dynamics in plant interphase cells. In this work, we measured for the first time interphase chromatin dynamics in plants using the green-fluorescent-protein-mediated chromatin-tagging system. Moreover, we compared the dynamics of diploid guard cells and endoreduplicated pavement cells. The movement of tagged loci in live seedlings shows constrained behavior in both types of nuclei. However, we found that the apparent confinement area for …

Regionalism And Cultural Identity In Western Amazonia, Donald Pollock Jun 2003

Regionalism And Cultural Identity In Western Amazonia, Donald Pollock

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this I article examine some of the processes by which new representational strategies are being developed by indigenous communities in western Brazil. While language has long been a marker of identity among indigenous groups, more recent political and economic forces have led to the emergence of forms of identity that transcend traditional language differences. Regionality, for example, has become a potent conceptual field for new forms of identity in western Brazil, but it subtly incorporates the concept of land, linking indigenous identity struggles in this area to the broader problem of land in Brazil.

Este artigo examina os processos …

South Dakota Farmland Market Trends: 1991-2003, Larry Janssen, Burton Pflueger

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Agricultural land values and cash rental rates in South Dakota, by region and by state, are the primary topics of this report, which is written for farmers and ranchers, landowners, agricultural professionals (lenders, rural appraisers, professional farm managers, Extension agents, and educators), and policy makers interested in agricultural land market trends. This report contains the results of the 2003 SDSU South Dakota Farm Real Estate Market Survey, the 13th annual SDSU survey developed to estimate agricultural land values and cash rental rates by land use in different regions of South Dakota

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison Jun 2003

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison

Missouri Law Review

This Article examines the school voucher debate. Because “the causes of poverty within the black community are both structural and behavioral,” and because the available evidence provides an inferential connection between education and poverty, I contend that the reigning legal and political theory as embedded in, and as explicated by the constitutional jurisprudence of the Zelman dissenters, and as exemplified by other commentators, fails to address adequately racial disparity and neglects to consider adequately the victims of the current public school hegemony. Hence, the legitimacy of much of the current opposition to school vouchers remains indefensible form an outsider perspective.
