Leadership In The Context Of A Corporate Restructuring, Howard S. Steinberg Jun 2003

Leadership In The Context Of A Corporate Restructuring, Howard S. Steinberg

Student Scholarship

Examination of leadership characteristics in the context of a corporate restructuring proved to be surprising. Observations and reviewed documentation revealed that no single characteristic of leadership differentiated leaders from managers but rather it is a combination of qualities that make the difference. Emerging themes, together with those theorized in literature, illustrate that although terminology has changed the basic understanding of leadership has not. The ability to challenge oneself personally and professionally remains at the heart of those that lead. The finest leaders of our time--the Jack Welches, and the Lou Gerstners--are all highly energetic individuals that continually challenge the status …

Flat Chests And Crossed Eyes: Scrutinizing Minor Bodily Stigmas Through The Lens Of Cosmetic Surgery, Joan Ann George Jun 2003

Flat Chests And Crossed Eyes: Scrutinizing Minor Bodily Stigmas Through The Lens Of Cosmetic Surgery, Joan Ann George

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

If cosmetic surgery has become the cultural lens through which Americans look at issues of beauty and ugliness (Haiken 1997), then minor bodily stigma is the personal lens through which we scrutinize our bodies and self-diagnose our own flaws in the first place (Ellis 1998). In this dissertation, I interrogated the stories of eight women who struggled with two specific minor bodily stigmas--strabismus (crossed eyes) and micromastia (small breasts). Cosmetic surgery presents a potential "cure" for both of these conditions, however, as some of my interviewees could testify, the results are unpredictable. While some women reported being grateful that they …

West Indian Mammals From The Albert Schwartz Collection: Biological And Historical Information, Robert M. Timm, Hugh H. Genoways Jun 2003

West Indian Mammals From The Albert Schwartz Collection: Biological And Historical Information, Robert M. Timm, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

In the period 1954-1976, Albert Schwartz and several students working with him made extensive collections of mammals (ca. 2,000 specimens), reptiles and amphibians, birds, and butterflies in the West Indies. Schwartz's private collection of mammals from the West Indies is among the most comprehensive and important mammal collections from the region, yet much of it has never been reported in the scientific literature. Schwartz's original intent was to fully document all of the terrestrial mammals of the West Indies. In 1989, Schwartz transferred his mammal collection of some 6,500 specimens to the University of Kansas, and included in that collection …

Risk And The Economic Incentive To Retain Ownership Of Steer Calves, Scott Fausti, Brad Johnson, William Epperson, Nancy Grathwohl Jun 2003

Risk And The Economic Incentive To Retain Ownership Of Steer Calves, Scott Fausti, Brad Johnson, William Epperson, Nancy Grathwohl

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Retained ownership of steer calves is an investment decision for cow/calf producers. Data collected over a three-year period on 845 steer calves reveals that retaining ownership of steer calves is, on average, profitable. Systematic and unsystematic risks associated with retaining ownership of steer calves are identified. Empirical results indicate that unsystematic risk account for 67% of the variability in the rate of return to retained ownership. Empirical evidence also suggests that retaining ownership is a riskier investment decision than assumed in the earlier literature. This suggests that the lack of enthusiasm for retaining ownership by cow/calf producers is the result …

Sensitivity Analysis For The Assessment Of Causal Vaccine Effects On Viral Load In Hiv Vaccine Trials, Peter B. Gilbert, Ronald J. Bosch, Michael G. Hudgens Jun 2003

Sensitivity Analysis For The Assessment Of Causal Vaccine Effects On Viral Load In Hiv Vaccine Trials, Peter B. Gilbert, Ronald J. Bosch, Michael G. Hudgens

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Vaccines with limited ability to prevent HIV infection may positively impact the HIV/AIDS pandemic by preventing secondary transmission and disease in vaccine recipients who become infected. To evaluate the impact of vaccination on secondary transmission and disease, efficacy trials assess vaccine effects on HIV viral load and other surrogate endpoints measured after infection. A standard test that compares the distribution of viral load between the infected subgroups of vaccine and placebo recipients does not assess a causal effect of vaccine, because the comparison groups are selected after randomization. To address this problem, we formulate clinically relevant causal estimands using the …

"The more we get out of the world the less we leave, and in the long run we shall have to pay our debts at a time that may be very inconvenient for our own survival." - Norbert Wiener

Introduction: The world's energy and environmental crises are inextricably linked. The processes of extracting, processing, and burning fossil fuels generates copious pollution of air, water, and land. Fossil-fuel-derived energy lies at the heart of other environmental problems. Fossil energy powers the bulldozers clearing rainforests. It runs the tractors and other farm equipment of industrial agriculture, compacting and mineralizing soils thus increasing …

A Functional Relationship Between Numa And Kid Is Involved In Both Spindle Organization And Chromosome Alignment In Vertebrate Cells, Aime A. Levesque, Louisa Howard, Michael B. Gordon, Duane A. Compton Jun 2003

A Functional Relationship Between Numa And Kid Is Involved In Both Spindle Organization And Chromosome Alignment In Vertebrate Cells, Aime A. Levesque, Louisa Howard, Michael B. Gordon, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

We examined spindle morphology and chromosome alignment in vertebrate cells after simultaneous perturbation of the chromokinesin Kid and either NuMA, CENP-E, or HSET. Spindle morphology and chromosome alignment after simultaneous perturbation of Kid and either HSET or CENP-E were no different from when either HSET or CENP-E was perturbed alone. However, short bipolar spindles with organized poles formed after perturbation of both Kid and NuMA in stark contrast to splayed spindle poles observed after perturbation of NuMA alone. Spindles were disorganized if Kid, NuMA, and HSET were perturbed, indicating that HSET is sufficient for spindle organization in the absence of …

Interview No. 980, Gonzalo Morales

Combined Interviews

Mr. Morales briefly recounts his childhood; in 1954, he heard about the Bracero Program; due to financial difficulties, he decided to go to Chihuahua, Chihuahua México, to begin the hiring process; he recalls how the Mexican President, Lázaro Cárdenas, prohibited people on ejidos from being hired as braceros; only people from ranches were allowed to be braceros; while working as a bracero he was unaware that the Mexican government received 10¢ per bracero that was hired from the ranchers; while waiting in Rio Vista, a processing center in Socorro, Texas, the food the braceros were given was rotten; the water …

Determination Of 4,4'-Dintrocarbanilide (Dnc), A Component Of Nicarbazin, In Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis) Eggshells Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Randal S. Stahl, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Teresa L. Buettgenbach, John J. Johnston

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A method was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography to assay 4,4'-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC), the active ingredient in Nicarbazin, in eggshells collected from Canada geese fed a formulated feed fortified with Nicarbazin at doses of 0, 125, 250, and 500 μg/g. The method was developed using chicken eggshells fortified with DNC. The method was used to quantify DNC in both the shell-associated membranes and the calcified shell extracellular matrix. These values were compared to those obtained for a composite sample consisting of both the membranes and the calcified shell extracellular matrix. The validated method was used to quantify DNC in eggshells from …
