Killer Whale Predation On Belugas In Cook Inlet, Alaska: Implications For A Depleted Population, Kim Shelden, David J. Rugh, Barbara Mahoney, Marilyn Dahlheim

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Killer whale predation on belugas in Cook Inlet, Alaska, has become a concern since the decline of these belugas was documented during the 1990s. Accordingly, killer whale sightings were compiled from systematic surveys, observer databases, and anecdotal accounts. Killer whales have been relatively common in lower Cook Inlet (at least 100 sightings from 1975 to 2002), but in the upper Inlet, north of Kalgin Island, sightings were infrequent (18 in 27 yr), especially prior to the 1990s. Beach cast beluga carcasses with teeth marks and missing flesh also provided evidence of killer whale predation. Most observed killer whale/beluga interactions were …

Compromised Constitutions: The Iranian Experience With The 1918 Influenza Pandemic., Amir Afkhami

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications

The global demographic impact of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic continues to fascinate researchers and scholars. This paper examines the social and demographic effects of this outbreak on Iranian society, through a comprehensive investigation of the modes of transmission and propagation, mortality rates, and other distinctive features of the region, and reveals the importance of taking a country's unique sociopolitical settings into account. Iran was one of the regions hit hardest by the pandemic, with mortality rates significantly higher than in most regions of the world. Though globally the victims of influenza lived primarily in urban areas, it was Iran's rural …

The Politics Of Development In Indigenous Panama, Stefanie Wickstrom Jul 2003

The Politics Of Development In Indigenous Panama, Stefanie Wickstrom

Political Science Faculty Scholarship

How have indigenous societies responded to the changes taking place around them as development proceeds, and how have they been able to retain or regain control over resource management and their own forms of development? This article examines the experiences of the Kunas and the Ngöbe of Panama as they attempt to survive and adapt to development imposed by a dominant society. These indigenous societies have adapted to different ecological settings on the small isthmus, have been faced with different kinds of challenges to their control of lands and resources, and have responded in different ways. The first section contains …

Efecto De La Gnrh En El Proceso Del Reconocimiento Maternal De La Preñez Sobre La Supervivencia Embrionaria En Alpacas., Mariluz Araínga, Victor Leyva V., Wilber Garcia V., Enrique Franco Li.

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

The effect of GnRH administered around the time of maternal recognition of prenancy on the embryonic survival rate was studied. This study used 67 adult female alpacas sexually receptive to the male, and bearing a preovulatory follicle ≥ 7mm, detected by rectal ultrasonography. Animals were distributed in three groups: Go (n=23) as control; G1 (n=22) received 6 µg GnRH on day 4 after ovulation; and G2 (n=22) received 4 µg GnRH on days 8 and 9 after ovulation. The ocurrence of ovulation was confirmed through the detection of a corpus luteum (CL) on day 5 after ovulation. Fertilization and gestation …

The Least Of The Sentient Beings' And The Question Of Reduction, Refinement, And Replacement, Joseph Vining

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

The following essay is based on the keynote address the author delivered at the annual meeting of the Michigan Society for Medical Research last April in Lansing. It appears here with permission of the author, © Joseph Vining.

The subject I was asked to think about with you today is raised by a very large change in the focus of biomedical research. In raw percentage terms, the animals involved in experimentation are now overwhelmingly rats and mice, and perhaps because they are rats and mice, they are used in large numbers, numbers in thousands and tens of thousands at some …

Review Of Local Wonders: Seasons In The Bohemian Alps By Ted Kooser, Judith Sorenberger Jul 2003

Review Of Local Wonders: Seasons In The Bohemian Alps By Ted Kooser, Judith Sorenberger

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

It's no wonder that the title of Ted Kooser's first book of nonfiction prose should share the word "local" with his first volume of poems, A Local Habitation and a Name (1974), for place is always central in Kooser's writing. The locale of Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps is Kooser's land north of the village of Garland, Nebraska, where he lives with his wife; two dogs, and an indeterminate number of chickens.

Kooser claims this land as his place in several ways. First, he does a lot of looking: at old buildings, wild roses, animals, people. And he …

Preliminary Report On The Osteology And Relationships Of A New Aberrant Cryptocleidoid Plesiosaur From The Sundance Formation, Wyoming, F. Robin O’Keefe, William Wahl Jr. Jul 2003

Preliminary Report On The Osteology And Relationships Of A New Aberrant Cryptocleidoid Plesiosaur From The Sundance Formation, Wyoming, F. Robin O’Keefe, William Wahl Jr.

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

The cryptocleidoid plesiosaur Tatenectes laramiensis, new genus, is described from the Redwater Shale Member of the Sundance Formation, Narrona County, Wyoming. The holotype of this species was a partial skeleton that has since been lost. A neotype is designated that preserves the same elements present in the holotype. A second specimen is referred to the taxon, and this specimen includes cranial material. The preserved cranial elements are the left squamosal, a partial right frontal, several isolated teeth, the parasphenoid, and large portions of the left and right pterygoids. The skull shares many traits with that of Kimmerosaurus, a cryptocleidoid plesiosaur …

Current Taxonomic Status Of The Plesiosaur Pantasaurus Striatus From The Upper Jurassic Sundance Formation, Wyoming, F. Robin O’Keefe, William Wahl Jr. Jul 2003

Current Taxonomic Status Of The Plesiosaur Pantasaurus Striatus From The Upper Jurassic Sundance Formation, Wyoming, F. Robin O’Keefe, William Wahl Jr.

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Plesiosaur material has been known from the Redwater Shale member of the Sundance Formation (Jurassic: Oxfordian) of Wyoming for over 100 years, but has received little research attention. Here we report on the taxonomic status of a long-necked cryptocleidoid plesiosaur from the Redwater Shale, the correct identity of which is Pantosaurus striatus Marsh 1893. The taxon Muraenosaurus reedii Mehl 1912 is shown to be a junior synonym of Pantosaurus striatus. Pantosaurus is described on the basis of the holotype and referred specimens, and found to be a cryptocleidoid plesiosaur possessing between 35 and 40 cervical vertebrae. These vertebrae are very …
