Chromosome-Wide Control Of Meiotic Crossing Over In C. Elegans, Kenneth J. Hillers, Anne M. Villeneuve
Chromosome-Wide Control Of Meiotic Crossing Over In C. Elegans, Kenneth J. Hillers, Anne M. Villeneuve
Biological Sciences
A central event in sexual reproduction is the reduction in chromosome number that occurs at the meiosis I division. Most eukaryotes rely on crossing over between homologs, and the resulting chiasmata, to direct meiosis I chromosome segregation, yet make very few crossovers per chromosome pair [1] and [2]. This indicates that meiotic recombination must be tightly regulated to ensure that each chromosome pair enjoys the crossover necessary to ensure correct segregation. Here, we investigate control of meiotic crossing over in Caenorhabditis elegans, which averages only one crossover per chromosome pair per meiosis [3] and [4], by constructing genetic maps …

A Null Mutation For Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases-3 (Timp-3) Impairs Murine Bronchiole Branching Morphogenesis., Sean E Gill, M Cynthia Pape, Rama Khokha, Andrew J Watson, Kevin J Leco
Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) regulate extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). We have examined the role of TIMP-3 on ECM homeostasis and bronchiole branching morphogenesis during murine embryogenesis. Employing an in vitro organ culture system, we found decreased bronchiolar branching in null lungs when compared with wild type (WT) counterparts after 2 days in culture. When a synthetic inhibitor of MMPs at low dose was added to the culture system, branching was augmented regardless of genotype. Gelatin and in situ zymography revealed that null lungs exhibited enhanced activation of MMPs throughout lung development. We analysed the impact …

Motion Planning For Multiple Mobile Robots Using Dynamic Networks, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Jean-Claude Latombe
Motion Planning For Multiple Mobile Robots Using Dynamic Networks, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Jean-Claude Latombe
Computer Science and Software Engineering
A new motion planning framework is presented that enables multiple mobile robots with limited ranges of sensing and communication to maneuver and achieve goals safely in dynamic environments. To combine the respective advantages of centralized and de-centralized planning, this framework is based on the concept of centralized planning within dynamic robot networks. As the robots move in their environment, localized robot groups form networks, within which world models and robot goals can be shared. Whenever a network is formed, new information then becomes available to all robots in this network. With this new information, each robot uses a fast, centralized …

Papers in Virology
A tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)-based vector was utilized for expression of a cytosolic form of the bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) protein glycoprotein D (gDc). Nicotiana benthamiana plants were harvested 7 days after inoculation with RNA transcripts derived from the TMV-gDc recombinant virus. Recombinant gDc protein of expected electrophoretic mobility accumulated in inoculated leaves to a concentration of about 20 μg/g of fresh leaf tissue. Oil-based vaccines were formulated with crude foliar extracts to immunize mice parentally. After a single injection, animals developed a sustained and specific response to both the isolated gD and native virus particles. Cattle vaccinated with …
Bioenergy, Safety Net Tools Are Producers’ Top Priorities For Next Farm Bill, Bradley Lubben, Farm Foundation
Bioenergy, Safety Net Tools Are Producers’ Top Priorities For Next Farm Bill, Bradley Lubben, Farm Foundation
Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature
Bioenergy and the structure of safety net programs are of high interest to farmers and ranchers as the next farm bill is debated, according to more than 15,000 farmers and ranchers in 27 states surveyed by Farm Foundation’s National Public Policy Education Committee (NPPEC).
Producers ranked renewable energy, enhancing opportunities for small and beginning farmers, and assuring a safe and affordable food supply as their top three goals for the next farm bill. “All the goals presented to producers to rank were decades-old rationales for farm programs with the exception of bioenergy, an issue that has seen explosive growth in …

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll
Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll
Theses and Dissertations
Excavations at a high altitude archaeological site (3350 m) in the eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, uncovered at least three ephemeral brush structures. These temporary timberline dwellings are the highest structures excavated in Utah to date. The periods of occupation range from the early Fremont period to the post-contact era. It is believed that the Fremont occupations are logistical in nature, possibly representing male hunting parties. Logistical camps imply a departure from, and return to, a residential camp. Ethnographic studies show that most residential camps are located within proximity to culinary plants to facilitate collection by women. In the Uinta Mountains, …
