Interlink Between Biological Diversity And Climate Change: Advice On The Integration Of Biodiversity Considerations Into The Implementation Of The United Nations Framework Convention On Climate Change And Its Kyoto Protocol Oct 2003

Interlink Between Biological Diversity And Climate Change: Advice On The Integration Of Biodiversity Considerations Into The Implementation Of The United Nations Framework Convention On Climate Change And Its Kyoto Protocol

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Biological diversity includes all plants, animals, microorganisms, the ecosystems of which they are part, and the diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems. No single component of biodiversity (i.e., genes, species or ecosystems) is consistently a good indicator of the overall biodiversity as these components can vary independently. Functional diversity describes the variety of ecological functions of species or groups of species in an ecosystem. It is a biodiversity descriptor that provides an alternative way of understanding biological diversity, and the effects of disturbances caused by human activities, including climate change, on ecosystems.

Genome Of Bovine Herpesvirus 5, Gustavo A. Delhon, M. P. Moraes, Z. Lu, C. L. Afonso, E. F. Flores, R. Weiblen, G. F. Kutish, D. L. Rock Oct 2003

Genome Of Bovine Herpesvirus 5, Gustavo A. Delhon, M. P. Moraes, Z. Lu, C. L. Afonso, E. F. Flores, R. Weiblen, G. F. Kutish, D. L. Rock

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Here we present the complete genomic sequence of bovine herpesvirus 5 (BHV-5), an alphaherpesvirus responsible for fatal meningoencephalitis in cattle. The 138,390-bp genome encodes 70 putative proteins and resembles the α2 subgroup of herpesviruses in genomic organization and gene content. BHV-5 is very similar to BHV-1, the etiological agent of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, as reflected by the high level of amino acid identity in their protein repertoires (average, 82%). The highest similarity to BHV-1 products (≥95% amino acid identity) is found in proteins involved in viral DNA replication and processing (UL5, UL15, UL29, and UL39) and in virion proteins (UL14, …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Although cattle are reservoirs, no validated method exists to monitor Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli 0157 (STEC 0157) on farms. In 29 Midwestern United States feedlot pens we compared culturing feces from the individual cattle to: (1) culturing rope devices that cattle rub or chew; and (2) culturing a composite of fecal pats. Eighty-six per cent (68-96 %) of pens were classified correctly using rope devices to detect pens with at least 16 % of the cattle shedding STEC 0 157 [sensitivity = 82 % (57-96 %); specificity = 92 % (62-100 %)]. Ninety per cent of pens (73-98 %) were …

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Induces Rapid Cell Death And Functional Impairment Of Murine Dendritic Cells In Vitro, Clinton J. Jones, M. Fernandez, K. Herc, L. Bosnjak, M. Miranda-Saksena, R. A. Boadle, A. Cunningham Oct 2003

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Induces Rapid Cell Death And Functional Impairment Of Murine Dendritic Cells In Vitro, Clinton J. Jones, M. Fernandez, K. Herc, L. Bosnjak, M. Miranda-Saksena, R. A. Boadle, A. Cunningham

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Dendritic cells (DC) are critical for stimulation of naive T cells. Little is known about the effect of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection on DC structure or function or if the observed effects of HSV-1 on human DC are reproduced in murine DC. Here, we demonstrate that by 12 h postinfection, wild-type (wt) HSV-2 (186) abortively infected murine bone marrow-derived DC and induced early cell death compared to UV-inactivated HSV-2 or mock-infected DC. HSV-2-induced loss of DC viability was more rapid than that induced by HSV-1 and was due, in part, to apoptosis, as shown by TEM, caspase-3 …

Soils with high levels of P can contribute to excess P in runoff and subsequently pollute the surface water. Excess P in the soil can be removed from the system by harvesting crops. The objectives of this study were to evaluate corn (Zea mays L.) P removal effects on soil P reduction, and to evaluate various corn hybrids and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] varieties for differences in grain P concentration and P removal. Soil with varying P levels as a result of annual or biennial beef cattle (Bos Taurus) feedlot manure or compost application was …

Morph-Dependent Fatty Acid Oxidation In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Implications For The Trade-Off Between Dispersal And Reproduction, Anthony J. Zera, Zhangwu Zhao Oct 2003

Morph-Dependent Fatty Acid Oxidation In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Implications For The Trade-Off Between Dispersal And Reproduction, Anthony J. Zera, Zhangwu Zhao

Anthony Zera Publications

Although a considerable amount of information is available on the ecology and physiology of wing polymorphism, much less is known about the biochemical–genetic basis of morph specialization for dispersal versus reproduction. Previous studies have shown that the dispersing morph of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, prioritizes the accumulation of triglyceride flight fuel over ovarian growth, while the opposite occurs in the flightless morph during the first week of adulthood. In this study, we compared the in vivo rate of lipid oxidation between genetic stocks of flight-capable versus flightless morphs to determine the role of lipid catabolism in morph specialization …

Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Searching For A Better Understanding, Mostafa Q. Al-Shamiri, Mansour M. Al-Nozha

Saudi Medical Journal

Congestive heart failure is an uncommon complication of pregnancy with potentially life-threatening consequences. Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a disease of unknown cause in which severe left ventricular dysfunction occurs during late pregnancy or the early puerperium. In the past, the diagnosis of this entity was made on clinical grounds; however, modern echocardiographic techniques have allowed more accurate diagnoses by excluding cases of diseases that mimic the clinical symptoms and signs of heart failure. Risk factors for peripartum cardiomyopathy include advanced maternal age, multiparity, African descent, twinning, and long-term tocolysis. An extensive search for the causes of peripartum cardiomyopathy has been …

Lessons From A Quiet Classic, Daniel R. Brooks Oct 2003

Lessons From A Quiet Classic, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Parasitology has a rich tradition of studies linking taxonomy, ecology, and life cycles and development. This tradition has produced an enormous amount of empirical evidence demonstrating that parasites form highly integrated reproductive-developmental-ecological systems that are highly persistent through space and time. As well, phylogenetic studies of parasites, especially of parasitic platyhelminths, represent 1 of the most progressive areas of systematic biology. Consequently, parasitologists should be at the forefront of research in evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) and integrative biology, and parasite systems should be model systems of choice for those research programs. Species of the digenean, Alloglossidium, provide a superb …

A New Species Of Syncuaria Gilbert, 1927 (Nematoda: Acuarioidea: Acuariidae) In The Wood Stork, Mycteria Americana L. (Aves: Ciconiiformes: Ciconiidae) From The Área De Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Luping Zhang, Daniel R. Brooks, Douglas Causey

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Syncuaria mycteriae n. sp. (Nematoda: Acuarioidea) was collected under the lining of the gizzard of a wood stork, Mycteria americana L., from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The new species can be distinguished from all known species of Syncuaria by having irregular dotted ornamentations on the caudal alae of males, a complex distal end of the left spicule comprising three protuberances, and a spicule ratio of 1:9.3. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of 11 Syncuaria spp. based on 9 morphological characters produced two equally parsimonious cladograms with a consistency index of 85%, differing only in the placement of S. hargilae …

Two Species Of Acuaria Bremser, 1811 (Nematoda: Acuarioidea: Acuariidae) In Passerine Birds From The Área De Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Luping Zhang, Daniel R. Brooks, Douglas Causey

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Two species of Acuaria were collected from passerine birds from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Acuaria mayori Lent, Freitas and Proenca, 1945, was collected from Myiarchus nuttingi. Specimens from Costa Rica differ from the original description by having a spicule ratio of 1:1.5-1.7 versus 1:1.43-1.47, as well as shorter spicules and female tails. Acuaria wangi n. sp. in Hylophylax naevioides and Gymnopithys leucaspis resembles A. alii, A. crami, A. cyanocitta, A. minuta, A. pattoni, and A. cissae by having cordons extending posteriorly to the anterior portion of the glandular esophagus. The …

The Cloudy Crystal Ball: Genetics, Child Abuse, And The Perils Of Predicting Behavior, Robert D. Stone Oct 2003

The Cloudy Crystal Ball: Genetics, Child Abuse, And The Perils Of Predicting Behavior, Robert D. Stone

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the cinematic world of Minority Report, mankind stands on the brink of a society without murder. Police can see the future, predicting murders and arresting perpetrators before they act. This utopian system is the ultimate evolution in preventative policing because it offers perfect prediction; it does not show what people intend to do, only what they will do. Society accepts the incarceration of pre-murderers, people who have committed no crimes, because there is no such thing as the "wrongfully accused.' Is the ability to predict behavior only science fiction, or can a combination of genetic and environmental factors actually …

Il-7 Enhances Peripheral T Cell Reconstitution After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation., Onder Alpdogan, Stephanie J Muriglan, Jeffrey M Eng, Lucy M Willis, Andrew S Greenberg, Barry J Kappel, Marcel R M Van Den Brink

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

We used clinically relevant murine allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) models to study the mechanisms by which IL-7 administration can improve posttransplant peripheral T cell reconstitution. After transplant we could distinguish two populations of mature donor T cells: (a) alloreactive T cells with decreased expression of CD127 (IL-7 receptor alpha chain) and (b) nonalloreactive T cells, which express CD127 and undergo homeostatic proliferation. IL-7 administration increased the homeostatic proliferation of nonalloreactive T cells, but had no effect on alloreactive T cells and the development of graft-versus-host disease. Allogeneic transplant of purified hematopoietic stem cells and adoptive transfer of thymocytes into …

The Logic Of Reciprocity: Trust, Collective Action, And Law, Dan M. Kahan Oct 2003

The Logic Of Reciprocity: Trust, Collective Action, And Law, Dan M. Kahan

Michigan Law Review

The Logic of Collective Action has for decades supplied the logic of public-policy analysis. In this pioneering application of public choice theory, Mancur Olson elegantly punctured the premise - shared by a variety of political theories - that individuals can be expected to act consistently with the interest of the groups to which they belong. Absent externally imposed incentives, wealth-maximizing individuals, he argued, will rarely find it in their interest to contribute to goods that benefit the group as a whole, but rather will "free ride" on the contributions that other group members make. As a result, too few individuals …

Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis With Probabilistic Risk Assessment For The Management Of Contaminated Ground Water, I. Khadam, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Traditionally, environmental decision analysis in subsurface contamination scenarios is performed using cost–benefit analysis. In this paper, we discuss some of the limitations associated with cost–benefit analysis, especially its definition of risk, its definition of cost of risk, and its poor ability to communicate risk-related information. This paper presents an integrated approach for management of contaminated ground water resources using health risk assessment and economic analysis through a multi-criteria decision analysis framework. The methodology introduces several important concepts and definitions in decision analysis related to subsurface contamination. These are the trade-off between population risk and individual risk, the trade-off between the …
