Aspidoderid Nematodes From Bolivian Armadillos, With The Description Of A New Species Of Lauroia (Heterakoidea: Aspidoderidae), F Agustín Jiménez-Ruiz, Scott L Gardner

Publications

One nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) and 1 yellow armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus) were necropsied in the field during an expedition to collect parasites of mammals in Bolivia. A total of 205 Aspidodera binansata Railliet and Henry, 1913 (Heterakoidea: Aspidoderidae), and 40 specimens of Lauroia bolivari n. sp. (Heterakoidea: Aspidoderidae) were recovered from the cecum and large intestines of D. novemcinctus and E. sexcinctus. Aspidodera esperanzae Fujita et al., 1995, is proposed as a junior synonym of A. binansata based on the structure of the cordons on the hood. Lauroia bolivari n. sp. has an undercut cephalic …

Mitochondrial Mrna Stability And Polyadenylation During Anoxia-Induced Quiescence In The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana, Brian D. Eads, Steven C. Hand Oct 2003

Mitochondrial Mrna Stability And Polyadenylation During Anoxia-Induced Quiescence In The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana, Brian D. Eads, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Polyadenylation of messenger RNA is known to be an important mechanism for regulating mRNA stability in a variety of systems, including bacteria, chloroplasts and plant mitochondria. By comparison, little is known about the role played by polyadenylation in animal mitochondrial gene expression. We have used embryos of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana to test hypotheses regarding message stability and polyadenylation under conditions simulating anoxia-induced quiescence. In response to anoxia, these embryos undergo a profound and acute metabolic downregulation, characterized by a steep drop in intracellular pH (pHi) and ATP levels. Using dot blots of total mitochondrial RNA, we show that …

The Effect Of Density-Dependent Catastrophes On Population Persistence Time, Chris Wilcox, Bret Elderd Oct 2003

The Effect Of Density-Dependent Catastrophes On Population Persistence Time, Chris Wilcox, Bret Elderd

Faculty Publications

1. There has been increasing recognition that catastrophes are an important factor in modelling threatened populations. However, density dependence has generally been omitted from models of threatened populations on the assumption that this omission yields conservative predictions. We explore the significance of including density-dependent catastrophes in models of threatened populations. 2. Using an analytical model, we show that density-dependent catastrophes have a significant effect on population persistence, decreasing mean persistence time at large population sizes and causing a relative increase at intermediate sizes. 3. We illustrate our results with empirical data from a disease outbreak in crabeater seals Lobodon carcinophagus …

Evaluation Of Methods To Protect Water Quality In Karst Areas: Phase I, Jennifer Webster, Dhandayudhapani Ramalingam, Sudhir Palle Oct 2003

Evaluation Of Methods To Protect Water Quality In Karst Areas: Phase I, Jennifer Webster, Dhandayudhapani Ramalingam, Sudhir Palle

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The primary focus of this report is two-fold; to provide a literature review on what has been previously learned about highway runoff in relation to karsts aquifers and to characterize a karsts highway site in Kentucky that can be used to evaluate a variety of best management practices. From research findings, the main sources of pollutants in highway runoff came from vehicles, atmospheric fallout, and precipitation. The behavior of pollutants and their interaction with the environment can dictate where they will be found and how to best minimize their effects. Although it would seem that traffic volumes would greatly influence …

Fact Sheet #2: Do I Need A Npdes Permit For My Livestock Or Poultry Operation, Richard K. Koelsch

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

New U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules that took effect April 14, 2003 indicate that animal feeding operations (AFOs) can be defined as concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and required to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit from the EPA or a designated state permitting authority. The likelihood of an AFO being classified as a CAFO will depend, in large part, on whether that operation is considered to be large, medium, or small.

Meeting The Challenge: Training An Aging Population To Use Computers, Carol Bean

The Southeastern Librarian

Older adults present a special challenge to libraries offering computer training. Many of those seeking training have little, if any, prior experience with the concepts and skills necessary to use computers, yet their ability to learn those concepts and skills is hampered by the aging process. This article summarizes the factors in aging which most affect learning computer skills, and how those factors can be mitigated.

Robot Heavens And Robot Dreams: Ultimate Reality In A.I. And Other Recent Films, Frances Flannery-Dailey Oct 2003

Robot Heavens And Robot Dreams: Ultimate Reality In A.I. And Other Recent Films, Frances Flannery-Dailey

Journal of Religion & Film

Numerous recent films understand ultimate reality to be multi-layered. This article examines the various formulas films use to express this idea, such as heaven, dreams, technology, temporal loops and altered mental states, while also exploring the various religious and philosophical traditions on which these "ultimate reality films" draw. Next, I suggest a postmodern framework as a way of accounting for the ubiquity of the reality theme across filmic genres and I argue that film is a unique medium for expressing this epistemology. Finally, I turn to an extensive analysis of A.I. as a case study of a postmodern, multivalent "ultimate …

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco Oct 2003

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

About two hundred and eighty business professors compared seventeen teaching methods and resources based on four objectives. Interactive, hands-on teaching methods such as internships were rated first and less interactive teaching resources such as radio were rated last. Web courses that included more interaction such as chats were rated higher than Web courses with audio, typed lectures, and videos. However, all four types of Web courses investigated were rated in the bottom half of the teaching methods and resources. Results correspond to major principles of andragogy theory.

Organizational Preparation For Terrorist Attack, Alan Wallace, Vernon Harper

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

In the event of a terrorist attack causing mass casualties or nuclear, biological, or chemical contamination, emergency responders easily can be overwhelmed by demands for their services. Advance planning by organizations with the advice of emergency responders to safeguard people from becoming victims, to care for victims before emergency responders arrive, and to render assistance to emergency responders once they arrive is critical to mitigating damage.

Integrating Network Attached Mass Storage Systems Into Educational Networks: An Initial Examination Of Performance And Security Issues, Dennis Guster, James E. Weber, Charles Hall

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

As colleges and universities digitalize record storage, classroom support and administrative processes, data storage needs are increasing dramatically. Institutions of higher education are turning to mass storage systems to fill these needs. NAS (network attachedstorage) is often selected over alternatives for cost, scalability and ease of administration reasons. This paper reports the results of an initial study assessing security concerns, performance characteristics, ease of installation, configuration, upgradeability, and use by end users, in an academic installation of network attached storage.

A Novel Behavior Observed In Humpback Whales On Wintering Grounds At Abrolhos Bank (Brazil), Maria Morete, Ana Freitas, Marcia Engel, Richard M. Pace Iii, Phillip Clapham

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We describe a novel behavior, termed “tail-up,” observed in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on wintering grounds on Abrolhos Bank, Brazil. The behavior involves the whale positioned vertically in the water column with its tail in the air. Wirh the exception of calves, tail-up was observed in all social classes, and its frequency increased through the end of the season. Tail-ups were recorded in 144 (5.8%) of 2,465 groups of whales observed from a shore station, and in 297 (14.9%) of 1,996 groups observed from vessel surveys; biases in each method suggest that the true frequency lies between these …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In a previous study, comparison of the behavior of teneral Glossina morsitans morsitans on waterbuck, Kobus defassa (a refractory host), and on two preferred hosts, buffalo, Syncerus caffer, and ox, Bos indicus, suggested the presence of allomones in the waterbuck odor. Examination of the volatile odors by coupled gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection showed that the antennal receptors of the flies detected constituents common to the three bovids (phenols and aldehydes), as well as a series of compounds specific to waterbuck, including C8 - C13 methyl ketones, δ-octalactone, and phenols. In this study, behavioral respones of teneral G. m. morsitans to different …

Implications Of The Precautionary Principle For Environmental Regulation In The United States: Examples From The Control Of Hazardous Air Pollutants In The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, Bernard D. Goldstein, Russellyn S. Carruth Oct 2003

Implications Of The Precautionary Principle For Environmental Regulation In The United States: Examples From The Control Of Hazardous Air Pollutants In The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, Bernard D. Goldstein, Russellyn S. Carruth

Law and Contemporary Problems

Goldstein and Carruth argue that the hazardous air pollutant provisions of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments provide an example of the Precautionary Principle incorporated into US environmental legislation. Evaluating the outcome thus far leads them to the conclusion that utilizing the Precautionary Principle as a basis for legislation can be problematic to public-health goals.
