Secure Sharing Of Tuple Spaces In Ad Hoc Settings**Please See Wucse-03-26**, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Radu Handorean

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Security is emerging as a growing concern throughout the distributed computing community. Typical solutions entail specialized infrastructure support for authentication, encryption and access control. Mobile applications executing over ad hoc wireless networks present designers with a rather distinct set of security requirements. A totally open setting and limited resources call for lightweight and highly decentralized security solutions. In this paper we propose an approach that relies on extending an existing coordination middleware for mobility (Lime). The need to continue to offer a very simple model of coordination that assures rapid software development led to limiting extensions solely to password protected …

A Lightweight Coordination Model And Middleware For Mobile Computing **Please See Wucse-03-12**, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Chien-Liang Fok

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

LimeLite is a new coordination model and middleware designed to support rapid development of applications entailing logical mobility of agents and physical mobility of hosts. Designed to function in open environments, LimeLite performs automatic agent discovery but filters the results to define for each agent an individualized acquaintance list in accordance with run-time policies specified at the application level. This asymmetry among participants in the coordination process is dictated by the need to accommodate settings involving large numbers of agents and hosts that come and go freely. It represents an important departure from coordination research in general. The coordination context …

Domestic Terror (The Sniper Suspect's Divorce Records Show Patterns Of Power And Control And Missed Opportunities By The System To Intervene.), Jane C. Murphy

All Faculty Scholarship

Over the past few months, we have learned much about the violent, troubled life of sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad. Whether or not he pulled the trigger - some recent reports have pointed to his 17-year-old companion Lee Boyd Malvo as the main shooter - there is no doubt in the minds of domestic-violence experts that this adult is responsible for these deaths.

While many pundits conclude that we will never know what motivated the sniper suspect, to domestic violence experts his is an all-too-familiar story of a man whose relationships with the women and children - possibly including Malvo …

Parts And Properties In Aristotle's Categories, Phil Corkum Dec 2002

Parts And Properties In Aristotle's Categories, Phil Corkum

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Call a property recurrent if it can be found in more than one subject, and nonrecurrent otherwise. The question whether Aristotle holds that there are nonrecurrent properties has spawned a lively debate among recent commentators. An assumption held in common by both sides of the debate is that a property is nonrecurrent if it is inseparable from an individual subject. In this paper, I’ll argue that this assumption is false. There are a variety of kinds of separation in Aristotle. When we focus attention on what notion of separation is relevant, we will see that the inseparability possessed by individual …

Targeting Emotion In Early Stoicism, Scott M. Rubarth Dec 2002

Targeting Emotion In Early Stoicism, Scott M. Rubarth

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The Stoic sage is a cold, heartless being who would not grieve over the loss of a beloved companion or child. Unmoved, unemotional, uncaring, the sage is an ethical and emotional monstrosity hiding behind the pretension of the so-called virtues of detachment and austerity. That, at least, is how many who study Stoic ethics perceive the sage in regard to his/her emotional life. In this paper I will argue that this conception of the Stoic theory of emotion and passion is misleading; emotions, in fact, are central to Stoic ethics and apatheia should not be confused with the contemporary idea …

Carneades' Pithanon And Its Relation To Epoche And Apraxia, Suzanne Obdrzalek Dec 2002

Carneades' Pithanon And Its Relation To Epoche And Apraxia, Suzanne Obdrzalek

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Though the interpretation of ancient texts is notoriously difficult, Cameades presents what one might call a worst-case scenario. In the first place, he wrote nothing. His faithful disciple Clitomachus, attempting to play Plato to Cameades' Socrates, reportedly recorded Cameades' teachings in four hundred books. Not one remains. However, Clitomachus' attempt to make a philosophy of Cameades' anti-theoretical stance was not a complete failure; Cameades had a tremendous influence on the later Academy as well as the Stoa, and his views (or lack thereof) have been handed down to us by both Sextus Empiricus and Cicero. These sources are, nonetheless, problematic. …

The Design Of Reliable Protocols For Wireless Traffic Signal System, Qingfeng Huang, Ronald Miller Dec 2002

The Design Of Reliable Protocols For Wireless Traffic Signal System, Qingfeng Huang, Ronald Miller

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Electronic traffic signal has the advantage of being easily visible to machines. It is expected to augment the traditional traffic light system in future intelligent transportation environments, where intelligent vehicles interact with each other and with traffic systems and give informed advisories to drivers. One problem with wireless signals is that they are essentially omnidirectional. Even if one uses directional wireless signaling source, it is not clear how any recipient of a signal can reliably determine whether the signal is meant for him or her, in the presence of signal reflections. In this paper, we present a basic electronic traffic …

Perturbative Calculation Of The Triply Differential Cross Section For Photo-Double-Ionization Of He, Andrei Y. Istomin, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace Dec 2002

Perturbative Calculation Of The Triply Differential Cross Section For Photo-Double-Ionization Of He, Andrei Y. Istomin, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Single-photon, two-electron ionization of He is analyzed, taking into account electron correlation using lowest-order perturbation theory and including all individual electron angular momenta in the final two-electron continuum. Perturbative account of electron correlation in the final state, which describes the so-called TS-1 mechanism of double photoionization, combined with a variational account of electron screening, is found to provide results for the triply differential cross section at an excess energy of 20 eV that are in excellent agreement with both absolute experimental data and results of non-perturbative calculations, for all kinematics of the process in which the TS-1 mechanism is expected …

Environmental Indicator Report: Water Quality, Phil Trowbridge Dec 2002

Environmental Indicator Report: Water Quality, Phil Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

During the fall and winter of 2001-2002, the New Hampshire Estuaries Project’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) developed a suite of environmental indicators to track progress toward the NHEP’s management goals and objectives. These indicators were fully described in terms of their performance criteria, statistical methods, and measurable goals in the NHEP’s Monitoring Plan published in May 2002. The next step is to use these indicators to produce an updated “State of the Estuaries” report by the spring of 2003. The TAC decided to break this task into three sections: shellfish indicators in the fall of 2002; water quality indicators in …
